Farewell, LG Mobile: 20 Years Of Doing Phones Differently
Vložit
- čas přidán 5. 04. 2021
- From “Lucky Goldstar” to “Life’s Good” to … Last Gasp. That’s the rough trajectory of LG Mobile: a technology brand that over the past twenty years went from a strong second choice for American dumbphone buyers, to the only game in town if you wanted the hottest messaging phones available, to a case study on how to do Android smartphones differently - for better, and for worse.
Join Michael Fisher for a MrMobile retrospective on LG Mobile. From the LG Chocolate to the LG Wing (and the Pradas, Rumors, Flexes and Optimii in between) we’ll re-live LG’s highs and lows, and try to extract a useful lesson from its 2021 withdrawal from the mobile tech space.

It's sad to realize that the only remaining Korean cellphone company is Samsung. First, Pantech and now LG. Goodnight, LG. Life was Good, ol' friend 😢
Monopoly won't be nice
Yeah, and even Samsung aside from their foldables, has become quite stale. Mocking the competitors removing certain feature all while too quickly follow the suit anyways. They have become more expensive either. True the hardware polish have improved and OneUI is I think the best thing Samsung could do software wise, gone are the old bloated TouchWiz. But now there is less contender in the smartphone space that are willing to experiment.
If you think about it, Sony is also only the Japanese smartphone brand exist in the international market. Sure, domestically there are more and South Korea might have some few unknown domestic players as well. But it felt like the market has become more homogeneous, except more Chinese brands have become better and already filling up the space. At least they are making some experiments on their phones, all while not charging too much. I kinda wish though some would tone down with their too iOS-like UI skins.
Ive never heard of Pantech. What were they like. I'm going to miss Android having multiple companies competing. Samsung would be exactly like Apple given the chance.
@@FroyourHistory anyone would be like Apple given the chance, but it's almost impossible for another apple to rise at this point.
LG was very innovative but consistently failed to deliver a polished device.

There was once a youtube video of a guy putting a fish in the clear keypad. I can't find it anymore, though.
Wow, I never realized how much of an LG stan I used to be until seeing all these different models. I owned a good percentage of them before becoming a Samsung loyalist. The nostalgia and the heartbreak 😢
Samsung sucks. Get the LGV30 if you value audio over just taking pictures. Audio wins to me every day. Let your friends take pictures and send them to you.

They where actually just called "GoldStar" here in the west in the beginning😋 I had a TV from them many years ago.

"LG" means "Lucky GoldStar" while "Life's Good" is just their slogan.
@@Oystein87 I had a vcr of theirs for ages
@@Oystein87 Yes, I know! They were founded as the Lak Hui Chemical Industrial Company in 1947. "Lak Hui" is pronounced as "lucky" in Korean. In 1958 they founded GoldStar Co. Even though they weren't so great
The LG Quantum was and still is my favorite combo of smartphone and slider- and it still holds up today. I miss that level of design and comfortable form factor. Great history lesson and epitaph!
All great things must come to a end. But the memories we maid with LG will always be remembered. LG was there for us as we grew up and helped us in so many ways. We will always remember you LG. R.I.P.
The second that Samsung became the “defacto” android brand after the galaxy S7 and note success, LG had to tread carefully. Unfortunately they seemed to have ideas too bold for the tech of the time. Rip LG i will miss you buddy.
Fir me it was all the software issues. Nobody want to drop a load if money and have meh software or as I experienced boot loop madness and they did nothing for me so I went to Samsung and I was glad I did.
@@wj427 Same. Always preferred LG's design and hardware features, it was one of my favorite OEMs. Too bad everything was poorly executed. Phones had bad software and manufacturing defects. My Nexus 5X, for example, had an incredible camera for the price, a great fingerprint sensor and was always updated, giving it was a Nexus phone. But it went into that bootloop madness after a year! I lost all my money in a single year! My previous Nexus 5 was a great, good-loking phone with poor battery life and camera. The G series and the Velvet were some of the best-looking phones around, the V series had incredible phones with no compromisses. LG did great audio and video, too! But one couldn't risk buying an LG phone with no software support and no assurance that the hardware was gonna last for years, sadly.
2015 and the Snapdragon 808 sealed a lot of phone makers fates. LG, Blackberry, HTC, Motorola, even Sony, all tripped and died as a result of Qualcomm's miserable, half hearted efforts. That's not all that went wrong but it definitely helped rush them all to their timely or untimely ends
LG is the reason Samsung had to step it up with the cameras etc in the S6 and S7 series..😝
@@gabriellino6288 it's difficult to talk trash about LG when you're talking about an ancient Nexus 5. LG has released numerous devices ever since.

LG G3 was my first flagship and LG V30+ was my last LG phone... man I'm gonna miss them I loved my giant G Flex.. and my first ever android was an LG Ally..
Awesome work brother. I'm still hanging on to my V40 for the QUAD-DAC and surprisingly crisp display. I use it as a dedicated music device where I can keep high-res music files for enjoyment.
Thank you my friend! May your V40 live and play long.
Rockin the same phone and it gets me all warm inside to know that my cameras are as good as the Note 10 +
Same man, i still use my g6 with quad dac just for listening to music. My new samsung phone sounds way worse.
I remember being on the playground when the LG chocolate was the "it" phone, "she's got an LG chocolate" this, "I'm getting an LG chocolate for my birthday" that - I wasn't into tech as much back then so I was just thinking "huh must taste pretty good". Really was my first taste of phones not only being something you'd want to carry, but a fashion choice in itself. So they've stuck around in my mind for that.
mr mobile is the most smart tech analyst i have ever seen .. thank u mr mobile
The original LG Chocolate is my all-time favorite mobile phone. As you said at the end, thanks for the memories LG.
I respected them fighting in their own new way that was different from others.
This clip had so much heart that I felt the sadness and was touched. Thanks for this. As usual, great content.
I have fond memories of texting on my first phone, an LG Keybo (marketed as LG enV2 in the US).
I used to have a RumourTouch, and I loved it!
I'll definitely take good care of my V30, this might be the last of its kind when the time comes.
You can always find them on E-bay.
@@excalibur1812 Yes you can, but having one that's been with you since 2017 is different 💁♂️
I feel bad that I smashed my LG G6, it served a good 5 years :,(
@@apollo7557 On purpose or accidental?
@@rjn1749 accidental of course, poor thing didn't deserve what it got :(
Thanks for this. So insightful and narratively well put together.
CZcams search index engine is weird, it wouldn't bring any news on LG shutting down their phones division. 😬
Lg 's phone are incomplete. Some lag ram, some looked outdated, some software outdated...and poor PR and mkting. I love them but the less knowledgeable people go samsung, apple or cheap chinese brands

U
The best mobile reviewer on CZcams, thanks for this
LG G2 was my favourite and one of those mobile which had longer lifecycle in my collection
Man! you are not a CZcams reviewer, you are an artist. And this coming from a guy who is polar opposite of being a fan of any one person in particular. Kudos to great work. Keep it up 👍
still love my LG phones V30 V50 V60 are all solid and that wing is so special..a rollable LG phone is only a dream now
One of my favorite phones so far was my G Flex 2. I loved the curved display and the placement of the volume and power buttons, and it's still the only phone I've ever owned that made someone in public stop and ask me about it. Unfortunately, it died a year or two into owning it-- the phone would "turn on" and vibrate but the screen would never come on-- and I could never fix it. It's a shame too, because I had a whole lot of memos on LG's proprietary, non-networked notes app that I can't access anymore. Ah well. Memories.
I still have an operating (minus cellular connectivity) LG enV
The voyager was my absolute favorite, still to this day.
The only techtuber out there telling beautiful stories instead of relentlessly boring unboxings and bland reviews...he doesn't need to shout to get his point across, or incorporate giveaway gimmicks, or run scams to sell products of his own.
This man has turned tech youtubing into an art form.
The shade.... lol
For kind of information lg phones are innovative but people want to buy a phone which are good in performance so the other tech reviewer only unbox those phone which can be recommended to a large number of people.
