- Discover the key differences between mixing and mastering and what tools can help you do both efficiently. In this video, Geoff Manchester delves into the crucial yet often misunderstood aspects of mixing and mastering, including which stage of audio production should be used to correct issues like audibility of a guitar, fixing a muddy low end, reducing harshness of the vocals, and more.
By the end of this video, you’ll have a better understanding of what processes happen in these fundamental stages of audio production and how you can use them to shape the final sound of your songs.

man music is so much more complex than I thought it was, thank you for this
The despair in the eyes of the mixer vs the confidence in the expression of the mastering engineer is hilarious 😅
Great content, as always! Neutron, Nectar, and Ozone are on EVERY mix that I do. And RX is a lifesaver in every step of the process. Also, love the sound of Geoff's voice!
Great video! Answered a bunch of my questions. Thank you 🙏
Album sequencing article is fantastic.
Great video as always
can you guys please do a CZcams tutorial on album 💿 sequencing too?
Practical and usefull.
Thks
Thank you.
Thanks for explaining how mastering a mix
Hyrr🎉🎉🎉for Manchester thank you bro..
the footage of enrique to illustrate mixing is just hilarious
Thank you So MUCH ! Excellent VIDEO !!! (AMAZING SUITE ...) The only limit is CPU ... unfortunately
We start our mixing process with a volume balance and subsequently make adjustments using various tools such as EQ, reverb, saturation, and compression. These adjustments inevitably impact the volume, thus altering the initial balance we carefully established. My question is, should we consistently revert the volume of individual sounds to their original values set during the volume balancing stage every time we make these corrections?
Better Control if you do so, gain staging ✌️cause like you’ve said, the balance you established already, so unless you feel like after eq or what not something needs to be reconsidered in regards of balance you should always try to stay with the balance you had when starting 👌
I use logic pro for voice record, fl studio for instrument, Cubase and fl studio for mastering
Podrían activar los subtítulos? Hay mucha información valiosa que me gustaría aprender , llevo usando Izotope desde años . Y es la primera vez que veo tutoriales con tan buena calidad. Y lo que es mejor , de los propios creadores
Not getting a response from customer service regarding an Audiolens install problem in Cakewalk or Reaper, sent customer service multiple emails but only the auto-ack comes back. Can someone contact me ASAP?
Sorry to hear you're still waiting for a response from our support team. Can you please let us know your ticket number, or DM us on Instagram your email address so we can escalate your support ticket?
which do you recomend for master fader for mixing? thanks
Very close to how I’ve come to distinguish between the two:
Mixing is about bringing together different elements to form a cohesive whole.
Mastering is about optimising the final approved mix for your intended medium of distribution.
And yeah, I use Cubase for tracking/mixing and Wavelab for mastering as far as DAWs go. And yes, I see that Neutron and Ozone makes that distinction too 😉.
I’ve decided that my workflow would be that Mixing is making the song sound absolutely best in terms of tone, balance, depth, movement, groove, etc at around -18LUFS. Mastering is bringing that Mix up to level without ruining it and provides one more chance for tweaking the tone to make it sound even better than the best I could make it sound in the Mix (hopefully).
I know this is off topic but can we see squeaks on the spectrogram? I'm using RX10 and the guitar denoise but if possible to see the squeaks visually I'd like to know where I can learn how. Thank you to anyone who can help.
Great Video. May I know for podcast/speech/voice after nectar or Neutron step, how to use Ozone for them due to Ozone does not have voice/speech/dialgue function in mastering assistant function. It sometimes confuse me for Voice and diangue due to Neutron judge Voice and diangue unclearly.
For Voice/speech/dialgue, may I know the difference if I use 1) Nectar + Neutron 2) Nectar + Neutron + OZONE 3). Neutron + OZONE. Also, may I also confirm the time to use deverb and neo verb, Could you kindly make two videos next time. Thank you.⁹
I’m afraid my friend, you would have to reach out to a sound engineer with years of experience with izotope to give you what you really want. No CZcams video can help to go in that deep
So in video editing world, Mixing & Mastering is the other side of Color Correction & Colorgrading?
What MIC does he use in this video? Looks very interesting....
Hai , I AM GOING TO IMPORT ALL TRACKS IN ONE LOGIC PRO PROJECT FOR ALBUM MASTERING , WHAT BPM SHOULD I USE ????
patiently waiting for nectar 4 like... 😶🌫
With a low-latency mode 😩
I use ozone to see what it sets for me, then use that as a guide to fix my mix. Ideally ozone makes almost no changes, then I know I am done.
Is izotope still "Inc." after being bought from ni?
Hi! iZotope hasn't been bought by NI. We're within the same group of companies for a while now, but now all the brands are coming under NI instead of Soundwide. 😀 Please see more info here: bit.ly/3CPQdFK

Will you guys make an 'Are You Listening?' season for Orchestral Music? Or is there already one?
Background music is a bit too loud, very distracting.
The video otherwise is good as always, thanks
stop with these cringe cover photos
