But seriously, Burns, Benny and Harris will never be forgotten.

Two things strike me as I watch these old shows and routines and I am watching from Canada btw, so no one can accuse me of being red or blue. I am always so impressed by the fact that any time they referred to the President, whether by name or not they did so with respect for the office. And secondly, the humor had a simplicity and innocence which was the entire point. These programs were supposed to be a distraction, a diversion from daily life and daily worries. Now our 'entertainment' just rehashes the same issues and stresses people have but with an even more mean spiritedness than the news media! Instead of diversions for people, it's piling on and making things worse! It's incredible to me how bad things have become and no one seems to either notice or care where it all came from. These videos are treasures to me, I enjoy watching a few minutes every day and without fail I leave the screen smiling and sometimes even chuckling under my breath. Great stuff!!

Jack Benny and George Burns to me were two of the the funniest comedians on stage and film. Separately they could hold an audience with their jokes, but together they would keep the audience rolling in the isles.
George wrote in one of his books about having dinner with Jack... Where Jack wanted a biscuit, or toast, with butter. George said so have the bread and butter. Jack explained that he couldn't because Mary, his wife, says it's not good for him. George, replied that Mary wasn't there, so have the bread and butter. Jack orders the bread and the butter, consuming it happily. Upon the conclusion of the meal, the check was brought to the table... George intently shoves the check over to Jack to pay... Jack inquires why should he pay for the check? To which George remarks that if Jack didn't pay the check George would tell Mary about the bread and butter.... Jack paid the check.
These and other stories of the two are what made comedy what it was. Oh we have comedians today, and some are quite funny. But Jack and George were more than that, and we got to eaves drop into parts of their lives, because they constantly talked about it. Those of you who want to be funny, should learn from the old masters.
Thanks so much for giving me a good laugh.

Phil was actually the longtime bandleader of the Jack Benny Radio show. His reputation as a hard-drinking womanizer was just part of the act, he was the opposite in real life, married to Alice Faye for 54 years until his death. Oh, he was actually a pretty good golfer too, winning some of those pro-am tournaments

Yes. America HAD ( past tense) talent. In all venues it had talent.....real talent. Sadly now gone from our landscape.
Replaced by vulgar, obscene nobodies who hate their country.
It's so sad that today's youth will never know the likes of Hope, Benny, Burns and Allan, Skelton.....only to mention a few.
    One more thing worth noting.......
People used to have the capacity and willingness to laugh at themselves. A very healthy thing. Gone!! And that is a very, very bad sign. The youth of today are in for a very bleak future in so many ways. God help them.

Jack's voice is awesome - my guess is the clarity & pacing came from years of projecting on a live stage in Vaudeville: before amplification, where to deliver a joke properly, you had to be certain everyone in the room could make it out: I keep falling into Jimmy Stewart when I try to imitate him though ... gotta work on this one.

Phil Harris! PHIL HARRIS!! PHIL HARRIS!!! Come on! There was no excuse for you to not know who this was. (Look it up on Wikipedia) Wow! If you truly didn't know you needed to look it up. That was an offense to Phil Harris, Jack Benny and all of us older folks who know exactly who Phil Harris was. Really?!! Phil was Jack's bandleader during the radio years and was constantly bantering with Jack as you see in this clip. He also had many TV appearances and he appeared and starred in Movies including a few with Jack, did voice work for several Disney animated films.... etc. Maybe you have seen the Disney 1967 "Jungle Book" in which you will hear a lot of Phil Harris as the voice of Baloo.

Well, looks like Mr. Evans heard from enough folks as to who Phil Harris is----so let's move on, (but first, Iet me add Hey ! -- it's NICE to see a younger person acknowledge the abundance of talent that existed in days gone by.) Eventually you'll be more familiar with the names. I'd suggest listening to Benny's classic radio program, particularly in the Forties....there are countless bits (many featuring Phil Harris). The true greats relied on their abilities---not teleprompters, lip-syncing, or habitually resorting to sex jokes and vulgarity to get a laugh. Thanks for your CZcams vids, Mr. Evans.
