I don't think I'd go for either. They are undoubtedly good cars, but not a car you love. If I was getting an estate that size, I'd go for an Octavia. Best selling car in Switzerland for many years until recently.

I would go for a Corolla if the cabin weren't so noisy and if it were just a bit faster. Those are the only reasons I'm looking at luxury brands. I have no need to project status. I just need some peace and quiet in something that's nimble and quick. Great commentary as usual, Anna!

I appreciate the collaboration between Toyota and Suzuki, but I wonder if a Suzuki product would hold up the way a Toyota product would. I had a Suzuki Liana for 15 years. I had to change the engine twice. By sharp contrast, Toyota are so confident of their products that they offer a 10-year/200,000 km warranty in some places in Europe. No one can beat that. For me, it's Toyota all the way.

The Swace is literally a rebadged Corolla TS made in the UK in the same plant as the Toyota with the exact same parts. Also Suzuki in many countries matches Toyota's warranties and in fact even gave more warranty in some (6 years vs 5 for toyota in my country)

Another cracking quick review Anna as always. It's great to see a more value oriented car for review (it's also nice to see the odd loopy car review as well). Great 0 to 100 KMH score as well, very well done and possibly a slightly more smug Anna deservedly so. For the target buyer this makes a lot of sense from families or for someone who needs the extra carrying capacity but doesn't want a van. In car production and presentation are brilliant as usual as are the aerial drone scenes. I see the lovely black cat appears once again, I guess the director likes cats as do I so make sure the cat has a great supper as a your co star. Many thanks for sharing.

There's an automotive name not heard as much in the States these days, as I believe they stopped selling cars here about 2012. However, you do still see Suzuki cars on the road here and there, still serving even today. The Samurais🚙🚙🚙 were popular in my high school years, and the muscle car/hot rod/street machine guys (my crowd) would jokingly call them "rolling radios" or "soda cans" as the owners would load them up with bass speakers and crank the stereos so loud their quarter panels would ripple and quiver. Another fine review Anna, and you as always look ravishing in it. I have not seen a vehicle yet that you don't look great in. 🥰😍❤😉

Very interested to see this review as we wondered about replacing our Leon ST with a Corolla Tourer. Unfortunately, it only comes as a hybrid in the UK now. That adds considerable cost. If you go for the 2.0 to get a bit more power and get around the groaning CVT then you lose boot space and the cost goes up again. Then you have to add the extortionate road tax we now pay in the UK. The Leon only costs £35/year and still does 40 mpg. We simply couldn’t justify the cost to change so we’ve kept the Leon.

Thank you very much Kevin, I've filmed my first one yesterday :-) But to answer your immediate question, a hybrid/electric will always result in significantly better economy in town because everytime you slow down and brake, you charge the battery. The energy is produced, store and used. In regular petrol/diesel cars - the energy is always lost.

A comment about the CVT. The reason the engine makes so much noise is that, when you floor the pedal, it revs the engine up to its most powerful speed and adjusts the gear ratio to enable that. With any other sort of gearbox, you'd always be in slightly the wrong gear. People associated the noise of going through a series of fixed gears with driving fast, and they associate the sound of the engine running as fast as it can, with not having enough power. Are you sure the lack of punch isn't psychological? This is just an idea, because I don't drive a CVT. You report that the fuel consumption is very low. Isn't the fact that, when you floor the throttle, it goes straight to the best operating point, an important ingredient of this fuel economy success? Another feeling based idea: in a car with fixed speeds, you can tell how fast you're accelerating by listening to the engine pitch. On a CVT car, the pitch is constant -- there's no audible communication that you're accelerating, only the visual sign of the speedo or the white lines flashing past faster. Perhaps you are gaining speed quickly but you somehow don't believe because your ears aren't telling you that. These are just thoughts, I know.

    • @lukewalker1051
      @lukewalker1051 Před 6 měsíci +1

Close but difference is negligible and irrelevant. Both hybrid and full EV's are heavier than gas only vehicles which of course is due to driveline redundancy of a hybrid and in the case of EV only, the weight of the Li-Ion battery.
A little physics. Gasoline has 100 x's the energy density of a Li-Ion battery. For adequate range, a very large, heavy battery is required. For a basic Tesla 3 series the battery weighs in excess of '1000 lbs ' as compared to a tank of gasoline.which weighs about 100 lbs.

I design cars for a living. Hybrids are awful contrivances with a caveat. If you are technically clueless which the vast majority of the car buying world is, AND you sell your hybrid just out of warranty or shortly thereafter, no foul really other than the massive depreciation of selling a car with a depleted battery. A hybrid is a livable automobile if you don't prize performance, don't care about NVH and don't risk high repair cost out of warranty if you can find somebody smart enough to fix one.
Reason is, you pay more for 'less and not more performance' and higher initial cost versus petrol car only, for a couple more miles/gallon in fuel savings. A gas only car with only one powerplant, is more. A wristwatch with one versus two movements to tell time is a much better value aka cost/benefit. A wristwatch doesn't need two engines to tell time and a car doesn't need two powerplants for propulsion either. This redundancy has a cost both initially and long term.
    Hybrids exist for automaker profit.
2.5 x's the technical complexity, 100 computers, most have a CVT and hence awful NVH drone upon acceleration and statistically they fail at a higher rate (electronics) as they age and are much more expensive to repair from failing motor, motor controller or battery. Math which many struggled with in school. Statistics 101. More parts with same quality = higher failure rate.
They are a hustle on society and 'marketed' as better, however are far worse if owning long term and dumb people drink the koolaid and are easily conned.

In Europe too. People don't get on with the program, and it's a problem for manufacturers and the industry in general. Especially with the new cheap (and very combustible) Chinese cars.
Toyota hybrids are different though. It's basically Prius tech, very reliable, very economical (except motorway speeds).
But EVs, very 'niche' range of operation, even Tesla's, although by far the most popular EVs in my neck of the woods.
They are trying to ban the production of ICE cars for 2030. It's absurd, but they'll do it with taxes and more taxes to push people away from cheap ICE cars, even 2nd hand, and especially diesels (swapping my diesel for a Corolla Touring), with, you guessed it, more taxes, and emission restrictions.
Poor people, start cycling, and stop buying cheap cars.
