  • Joel Dufour at Earth Tools describes and demonstrates the PTO safety "lockout" system on a BCS walk-behind tractor.
This system is designed to prevent the operation of the tractor PTO when soil-working implements are attached to the tractor AND the tractor wheels are put in REVERSE gear. Problems sometimes arise when the handlebars have not been reversed in a long time, or the PTO lockout has never been lubricated...the PTO lockout can seize in place, and not DISENGAGE itself automatically when the handlebars are rotated. If this happens, use of a front-mount implement (such as a mower or snowblower) is prevented...as described in the video.

That was explained incredibly clearly. Thank you. You mentioned all the thoughts that ran through my head for a moment when mine was stuck! Makes total sense now why the rubber bump is semicircular.

Thanks so much for this video! I'm out in the field right now trying to figure out what's wrong and this told me exactly what my problem is!

You can buy the bar with slot and holes drilled in Uk it’s £51
I’ve had lots of these and most had seized so make new rod or buy
On mine there’s a spring a washer and o ring to lift and oil You must lift o ring up to oil as it seals the top

Thanks Joel, this was really useful. I've just bought a used Ferrari- not the car I'm afraid but the bright green clone of the Camon C6. The PTO shift joint is frozen as you described and I've tried vice grips and oil to no avail. I'm going to try a little heat like to prescribe in your video. Hopefully I can shift the little sucker into rotating! Cheers, from a very wet and windy Suffolk, UK!!

greetings . I have a 728 trailer with a 7.5 hp diesel engine and a bcs gearbox. While it was on and working, I rinsed the tiller with hot water. With the high pressure of the water, it turned itself off an hour later. Can you explain the reason for the tiller turning off? If it is with the film, I will understand better than a speech ... Thank you for your efforts and training ..

Wow, you can tell I don't have time to check my "comments" very often on CZcams!! Anyway, I don't know that a video would be all that instructional regarding this...but we have added a BCS vs. Grillo page on our website. Thanks.
