Paul Harrell did not "smoke dudes in country" his deployment was very uneventful. His self defense shootings were both stateside. And the majority of his competition medals were during his time as a shooting instructor in the military.

Online gun and car communities kind of suck for the most part, it's 1000x better to just talk to someone into cars and or guns in real life than it is on the internet.
You might be somewhere that's had that culture before the internet. With a lot of the people IRL you can tell what influencers they're into with how much they rub off on them. Down to the way they joke. Also, some people like to act fake obsessed about things for some reason because it is redditor approved behaviour or something like that.
You have to get into the sub-communities where people actually are trying to achieve something be it skills or some kind of goal with the hobby. Going into the surface level community stuff is just rampant consumerism and petty comparisons.

I was in the army infantry and have known actual ‘badass killers’ these guys want to emulate. And whenever we were at the range with these SOF types they were almost never showing up in full-on kit with all the bells and whistles. Half the time they would show up in civilian clothes and a FLC, and many wore similar shit in actual combat.
When i left the army One of the biggest tells of a cosplayer I would see was these guys who clearly hadnt seen shit would show up to the range with a kit full of fancy ass shit with their army nametapes strapped to their expensive plate carrier. And then you talk to them and they would act as if they were these walking death machines, but meanwhile i know that the actual killers that I knew would have pegged them as a sillybilly in 2 seconds
