no one wants to host them anymore as no host has made a profit since Sydney in 2000! The Olympics themselves have changed the rules that the host cities have to abide by in terms of sustainability etc and that is part of the problem for Brisbane as it is the first host under the new rules. They are also moving to a silent bidding process in the future as the IOC doesn't want the embarrassment of no one bidding and/or all the bidders pulling their bids at the last moment being aired in public anymore.
The best suggestion I have heard is to make a permanent home for the games somewhere. Personally I liked the Greece idea as that is the home of the original concept.

    @andrew7648 Před 24 dny +22

Mate, do some research. First of all, say the city's name correctly. Secondly, there's absolutely no suggestion the games will be moved. Thirdly, this stadium is an unsolicited, pie-in-the-sky proposal by a consortium that has nothing to do with the organising committee for the games and is trying to score some land from the Queensland government for a development. Fourthly, the renderings show a Cricket match, which, along with AFL will be the sports using the stadium post Olympics (these two sports are screaming for a new venue in the city regardless of the Olympics being held there) and any stadium designed for Cricket/AFL will easily be big enough for an athletics track - one of the complaints about Sydney's Olympic stadium from Cricket and AFL was that it was too small.
While it looks cool and I would love to see it happen, it's simply not going to but don't worry, Australia/Queensland/Brisbane will get this sorted. We always do and the 2032 Olympics will be fantastic just like the two other times we have hosted the games.

No access for participants, bus must park on the street and footpath blocked off by police to allow access, this is not workable for Olympics with participants coming and going all the time. Medicab can't even be driven to the medical rooms as corridors are so narrow. Vehicles can't be driven onto the playing area, this is why concerts don't happen there as access is so difficult. The most expensive corporate seats aren't protected from the weather. It just goes on and on with how bad the Gabba is and the only future for the Gabba is a complete knockdown. Plus it's hardly iconic, test matches have only been played there since after the war and there's only ever been 60 tests played there, just build Vic Park as it is the perfect solution.

Problem is the Olympic committee does not allow private stadiums to be used for Olympic Games. The government of queensland has rejected this idea. Brisbane will use three other stadiums that are currently available. Not unlike what LA is doing for the next Olympics one of the stadiums which will host the athletics was used in the 1982 Commonwealth Games. It will be fitted with temporary stands to keep the cost affordable which is something the Olympics drives to do these days. However things could change by the end of the year with queensland due for an election and potentially the next government may just go for a different idea. Australia would have no issues maintaining the stadium. The stadium is also being designed to host Australia’s two most popular sports which use the same configuration of an oval stadium.

It's not like it would significantly boost their tourism like the Games have the potential to do at the moment, when done right. Some cities go for temporary venues in many cases because they don't need, for example, a permanent 80,000 seater athletics stadium. Should they be forced to make those permanent? Also, what do you do about an Athletes Village? That's quite a gamble to assume a suitable location will always be available for development every time. You can't just leave a whole suburb sitting there unused for a couple of decades so a new village would be required every time. My point being, as good as such an idea may seem, it's not as simple as it perhaps first sounds...

It firstly needs to cull at a minimum one third of the current sports on the roster (keep break dancing for entertainment). Secondly it needs to allow cities to use existing venues. Thirdly the IOC needs to start injecting its own funds into the hosting city to help ensure it’s a profitable experience.

It would be the main stadium. It’s twice the size of an American stadium surface, that’s a cricket ground in the renderings, which fits 2x NFL pitches inside it.
Report the facts, not speculation on your uneducated opinion.
The 60 thousand is needed after the games for cricket and AFL. Theres no “can you fill it” the whole point is it’s a replacement stadium for the GABBA which would be torn down if this is built.
The GABBA is outdated and too small.

There's a rendering of this with an atheltics track so it's absolutely capalble of it. And for context it's propsed as privately funded, however they want the land for free.
However as a Brisbane resident this will not happen for 2 reasons.
    1) it has no warm up track nearby per IOC regs and most importantly,
    2) Stadiums Queensland (arm of the state gov't) owns and operates every stadium in the state with a capacity of over 10k seats, and they will not allow something like this to be built without them owning it.
In truth as crap as the situation is, there's a state election in October (about a week before the US election) where it's antcipated there will be a change of government, and that other rendering you showed (59seconds) is called the Victoria Park proposal, it was comissioned by a former Liberal (or republican for you Americans) Lord Mayor, and when the Liberals take charge in Novemeber it's expected that project will go ahead and become 'Brisbane Olympic Park', with a main stadium and 1 or 2 other venues (something similar but slightly smaller than what Sydney did in 2000.
We got alot of work to do over here though. It's time to stop delaying and either commit to building it, or give t back.

Fundamentally disagree with the premise that Brisbane needs to spend 6bill on a new stadium to “save” the Olympics
    Utter bollocks
Brisbane should decide what it needs post Olympics and fold that into its plan
It must not try and over egg its pudding
Suncorp is a Rugby stadium ( I use Rugby in this instance to cover League as well ) it’s perfectly sized for the NRL needs to stay rectangular therefore not broken don’t need to fix although it can probably have a few add ons for 2032 -
The Gabba I would go for as regards the athletics and the ceremonies, you could upgrade that for far less and nothing wrong with temp seating remember 2000 stadium Australia seated 110000 for the games and scaled it back to 80000 afterwards
The IOC should be supportive of that otherwise the Olympics going forward will likely only ever be held in the big stadium capitals of the world ie London ,Paris , and then others like LA , Tokyo Sydney and Beijing

After the Olympics it would be used for AFL Australian rules football which is played on a cricket ground. It would also be a perfect stadium for cricket indeed the stadium would be greatly used in Brisbane and it is greatly needed. However, this won’t happen it’s privately funded, the Olympics does not allow privately funded stadiums to be used for Olympic Games. It’s a no starter the Queen Elizabeth Stadium that was used for the Commonwealth Games in 1982 will in fact be the home of the athletics for the 22 Olympics in Brisbane Australia.

The winter olympics are fine. But I can see how it is a logistical nightmare for cities considering you can't just funnel most of it into an arena like the summer games. I also imagine that it's harder to sell tickets to some of their bigger ticket sports like the skiing events. Where do you stand? How do you watch? It's much better to watch winter sports on tv with the exception of figure skating which I have not seen in person. Refurbish the current stadiums and use the GABBA for ceremonies and athletics. The Olympics is due a major reform otherwise it faces extinction. It firstly needs to cull at a minimum one third of the current sports on the roster (keep break dancing for entertainment). Secondly it needs to allow cities to use existing venues. Thirdly the IOC needs to start injecting its own funds into the hosting city to help ensure it’s a profitable experience.
Otherwise no one is going to bid for them pre 2032.
