  • It's finally here! if you'd like to skip right to the books go here 02:49 :)
    Some friends asked for this video and it inspired me to reorganize some of my shelves....sort of.
    This was a new style of filming for me...crossing my fingers that the audio is somewhat consistent.

      Thanks. I've been so busy trying to edit this one I've watched so little BookTube this week. I need to catch up

    Thanks for the visit, it was really interesting! I had a couple surprises:
    1. Many different editions of your favourite books, even in different languages. Really nice!
    2. There were less books around than I expected, given what I've seen on your channel. But you also mentioned that you have boxes somewhere else, so it sounds like you keep your favourites around! Good idea

      Thanks Max. I have to admit I did clean up a bit and had to shove some books into boxes ha

    Such a fun stroll through your excellent SF book collection. Wow, that Asimov "Second Foundation" appears to be the find of a decade. Thanks again for all the hard work and preparation in putting these videos together. Much appreciation!

    Iiiiiiii'mmmmm baaaack! Didnt quite get around to this yesterday. Great tour! I have some inevitable book envy, particularly your horde of Dune hardcovers! You have a lot of fabulous books, thanks for posting this Michael. I also chuckled at your remark about not knowong which end of a camera was which in the early days. That phase is all too recent, arguably still in it! Cheers 👍🚀📚

    Fantastic video. Definitely one of my favorites. The thing i love about shopping for used books is seeing all the cool covers. It was great seeing that here too and seeing multiple covers as well. I can't wait till Whitney sees it. She's gonna get such a laugh at the end. Thanks for all the work you put into this.

    If that hardcover of The Wind-Up Girl on the top shelf is a first printing in fine condition, it's worth about $250 based on what I'm seeing online. Just thought I'd let you know if you weren't already aware. Also, you didn't showcase Ancillary Justice and it's unlikely you have a first printing, but if you do it's a hundred dollar book at least. People don't realize how valuable first edition paperbacks in fine condition can be if they're significant titles. (I'm still hoping to find a first printing of The Fifth Season at a yard sale or used bookstore that doesn't know what it's worth.)

    I saw The Windup Girl! I loved that book! And Nicky Dreyden also doesn't get enough attention. Prey of the Gods was good, but I really liked Escaping Exodus.
    I also really love the cover art of the 60s-80s. It is really emotional and evocative.

    Nice collection! It feels lived in and loved ☺ I know what you mean about not having ‘homogenised’ bookshelves. Mine are quite disparate too although I have them organised by ‘theme / genre / language’ and then alphabetical. My scifi ones are all gathered with fantasy and horror in a SpecFic zone (4 of 12 bookcases).
    I reckon you will enjoy The Count of Monte Cristo. I’m very tempted to re-read it. Haven’t read the title you mentioned, the one that is subtitled ‘Tiger, Tiger’ although I guess it refers to William Blake’s Tyger poem (?). Oh! and I love Pillars of the Earth too.
    Thanks for the tour ☺

    Looking at my bookshelf (chaos) your looks more organized. Iam not sure, if you already have done a video of reading routines. For me this would be interesting to know hoch much and when others find the right time to proceed and read a book.

    Have you read that saga volume one you showed near the end? I don't read a lot of graphic novels, but it's one of my favorite scifi series, gets really wild in the later volumes.

    Impressive collection. And people with the perfectly color-coordinated, identical sized books on their shelves get them set up by professional decorators so don't feel bad. I think a lot of the time they're not even real books LOL BTW, the green screen reminded me I wanted to tell you I love the backgrounds you put up during your videos. Your efforts are not unnoticed. 👍

    • @FIT2BREAD
      @FIT2BREAD  Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks for letting me know. I feel like the backgrounds are really part of the review. For some books more than others, I really get into long time drains making sure the background is just right

    More fantasy than SF - "They Fly at Ciron" was actually the 2nd novel Samuel R Delany wrote (Between 'Jewels of Aptor' & "The Fall of the Towers"). It was initially rejected by the publisher. Decades later, it was finally published after some edits & rewrites.

    Even though it's not sci-fi, I would be interested in your review of The Far Pavilions when you finish it. It's been a long time since I read it, but I remember it being an excellent novel. There was also a musical adaptation done of it in the mid-2000s and I think a few recordings from the production are on CZcams. If you like epic historical fiction, I would recommend "Omamori" by Richard McGill which is about an American and Japanese family whose intertwined business and personal relationships get impacted during WWII. Maybe you could do a few non-sci-fi top 10 book videos? I'm always curious to see what other genres book tubers pick up.

    • @FIT2BREAD
      @FIT2BREAD  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thanks Diana.. The temptation is always there to read more non scifi. I'm such a slow reader though, It's hard to work it it currently. Definitely on my top 10 non scifi, contenders would be The Far Pavilions (despite not yet finishing it), Crime and Punishment, Pillars of the Earth, The Orphan Master's Son, Quicksilver, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and The Innocent Man...just off the top of my head

    • @Diana-ch8cv
      @Diana-ch8cv Před 10 měsíci

      @@FIT2BREAD I sympathize, I'm a slow reader too 😅Pillars of the Earth is fantastic and I really enjoyed the miniseries. I have yet to read Crime and Punishment but I have two copies of it the Constance Garnett translation and a newer one from Nicholas Pasternak Slater, I think it will be interesting to compare them (eventually LOL). Never heard of the Orphan Master's Son but from the synopsis on goodreads it sounds really interesting

    • @FIT2BREAD
      @FIT2BREAD  Před 10 měsíci +1

      @Diana-ch8cv orphan master was really good...what sticks with me is how real he made North Korea feel. My non scifi TBR top on my list is Count of Monte Cristo

    video is even more interesting than the usual thanks so much for inviting us into your home admire your attempt to read flannery o'connor my hometown's most famous author her style is sometimes called southern gothic and it's not for everyone but if u only read one story let it be a good man is hard to find that one hit me right between the eyes and it's still pretty shocking today have read everything by robert forward but u r right martian rainbow it is a little light weight but anyone interested in his work should read dragon's egg (which recalls hal clement) or camelot at 30k still haven't gotten to pillars of the earth yet but I will I will and your son is really cute must be grown-up by now looks like he might be another brad pitt⚛😀
