  • While conducting my Color + Design workshop at the Port Townsend School of the Arts, the question came up - Is this workshop suitable both for abstract and figurative painters, and why?

My photography professor taught color theory - for both our b/w and color work. Our final exam was 5 slides of sunrise - and it was spring semester, sunrise 5:30am.
He said don’t try submitting sunset slides - the light at sunrise is markedly different from sunset and he’s know the difference. Saturation, luminosity, range of hues.

I’m in CVP 2020 & I see the value in this type of exercise. I’m getting better at recognizing relationships between & among colours but I want to be able to be fluent with the language to choose & adjust my colours to create the feeling I want in my paintings.

I’m in CVP 2020 and new to painting.. I can’t wait to learn more about this. I see this kinda of color harmony is not yet on my work..

Wow. Yes, extremely helpful to break it down in this way to help "see" color in these spectrums. Sounds like an awesome class. Thanks for sharing this!

Glad you liked it. Take a moment to check out the Language of Color workshop that Marija and I have made last year. We create and talk about the spectrums and much much more. Here is the link:

Great video Mark - very interesting to understand what the blocks of colour behind you were based on - that is what theory and as for going outside you got me there - tomorrow I will walk in the bush behind my home in the morning and then in the afternoon to see the difference in the colour of the ferns and the trees. Thank you

Good to see you Mark. I learned so much from you at CCA circa 2001-2005. Glad to see you are sharing your wisdom. Your words still inform my creative practice. Cheers.
