- Lighting a cinematic scene of a woman beside a window in the midday sun involves many advanced techniques, and in this video filmmaker Brady Bessette explains why he made specific decisions for how to handle the light coming in the windows. He shares many important tips for getting beautiful shots in this kind of setting, and how having powerful lights like the new Nanlite Forza 720 can help you battle and control the sunlight.
Brady often uses the Forza 720 lights with the Nanlite FL-20G fresnel lens to mimic the directionality of the sun. This attachment has a standard Bowens Mount and it intensifies the output of the light and lets you adjust the beam between spot and flood. The FL-20G includes the 8-way metal barndoors seen in the video.
When you use practical lights in your shots, like the table lamps that add visual flair to the scene in Brady’s video, an excellent option for the bulbs of these fixtures is the new Nanlite PavoBulb 10C. They have a standard E27 heads, so you can screw them into any common lamp and power them with the lamp’s AC. The great advantage they provide is that you can easily control their dimming, CCT, and even do RGB colors and effects. They work with the same Bluetooth and 2.4G found in the new Forza 720, so you can control the PavoBulbs through the NANLINK app for iOS and Android. The quality of the light the PavoBulbs provide is top-notch as well, so your scenes will look great on camera.
Brady also makes good use of the Nanlite Forza Projector for Bowens Mount, which significantly increases the output of the attached fixture and allows you to cut the light into custom shapes and adjust the focus of the lens for sharp or blurred edges. The projector is sold with a 19° or 36° lens, and the lenses are available individually. Projector attachments increase the creative potential of your lighting setups exponentially, so they are highly recommended.

Love the shot and your in depth explanation of what you did and why. How long did it take you to engineer the final look? How many times did you think you were set but decided to add/create more layers?
Camera color temperature settings? Any haze? Great video!
