- An SSD and 8GB of RAM can really make this little machine fly. I'm very pleased with the performance and so far Jess is absolutely loving this little beast. It's nice to know that the last ever Mac with an optical drive is a true performer.
Thanks for watching! I hope you all enjoy...

I recently bought one of these. 4gb ram 512gb mechanical hdd. Takes a long time to boot up. Upgraded it to 16gb ram and 1tb ssd. Running Catalina it runs very fast considering in 2021 it's now 9 years old. It will be a keeper for quite a while as my daily driver. Love these macbook pros. Enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!
What brand of ram did you use? I really fear that my macbook wont work properly if i use the wrong ones
@@jerry98ification As long as it is the same speed as the existing ram, it shouldn't really matter. It's probably a good idea if replacing both sticks (up to a max of 16gb) To use from the same manufacturer. Mine uses 2x 8gb sticks from Crucial.
Same about to upgrade soon on ssd and ram
How much does this cost?.
@@revanvonheaven8270 All together with purchase and upgrade about £300
Still use this beauty in 2016
Best Laptop ever
I'm still using it in 2017! Bone stock!
6:25 video starts
damn I should have read this before waiting 6 minutes of ramble.
Thank you
Aaayyyyy thx
Please reduce the useless talk, and do not explain the stories of screwed bolts !
2018 still working like a boss
same here..I've just switched the HDD with an SSD when I bought it 6 years ago
Jay Ed.90 can I ask how much did it cost for SSD update?
Tsering Chodon I bought a Samsung 840 EVO from Amazon (like 5 years ago) for 200€ and I mounted it myself. Nowadays you can easily find them at half the price.
Hello The samsung SSD already has that os system right ?
zhao Henry no, it's empty when you buy it..if that's what you mean
It’s 2024 and I still have mine. Upgraded the hard drive to 1tb from 150ish gbs and now upgrading the battery and ram. Still works great!
End of 2017 and this beautiful beastie is still growing strong! Doesn't even really need the RAM upgrade to 16 - but it deserves it!
I just picked up the exact same model macbook for $100. A friend sold it to me after disk utility would not recognize any drive put in. I replaced the HD cable and installed a 128GB SSD donated from another friend and now it flys!!! awesome machine! I paid $128 total. very happy. Love your videos Tom. Keep it up brother.
Where did you get the MacBook from
+Epic Hanad are yu stupid did you even read the comment?
+Wiscool13 stfu. I'm not the guy who sits on his computer all day and read comments like a pro. I made a mistake what's the big deal.
Epic Hanad no its just it says it in the second line
Carjack Malone wow, i paid 1099$ for it!
Glad to see everything is starting to look up Tom! Good video as always!
THANK YOU SO MUCH MAN! YOU'RE AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND
Just upgraded MBP memory (and to SSD). Thanks so much walking me through this!
Don't apologize for your mood . Great video
Sounds like a reasonable upgrade.
BTW it's not officially documented, but the MacBook Pro (2012; non-Retina) can be further upgraded with 16GB of RAM.
how did you do it without time machine??
EXCELLENT video my friend!!!! Thank you for posting😊😊
2018.... I am still loving my MACBOOK mid 2012. One of the best comp I have...
2021 any update
Huge difference man.. I was planning to upgrade my ram and instead I changes to SSD. Mine is a 2012 model macbook pro. Now I don't need to change ram at all. It's working smooth as butter.
I used time machine as backup.. once I finished inserting SSD, I went to disk utility, erased installed SSD and restored time machine.
I just picked up an immaculate model for £200 a few hours ago, it's pristine, the previous owner really looked after it. 500gb hard drive and 8gb RAM. I'm going to upgrade the ram over the weekend as I ended to use it for photo editing. I'm very pleased :)
thank you so much! did it in just a couple of minutes, dope upgrade for my mac, from 4 to 16gb really easy!
where did you get those 16 gb ram?
From amazon search for Mac memory you can find Corsair. Cheers
Absolutely useful video! Thanks
thanks for this video thinking of buying this model in 2016 and I'm confident that it will be perfect for me!
October 2019, mine is still running amazingly.
Erick Angulo hi bro. Im thinking of upgrading mine as upgrading will be way cheaper then buying a new one. I just wanted to know how its running with the new mac os update? Because my stock one feels like a dinosaur right now
2020 working with a huge DAW and all the VST and plugins? Working like a boss
It is 2018. My 2012 MacBook Pro is amazingly cool 😎
2019 and still going!
do you use tRIM enable?
2019 and mine is still doing great!
Great video! Will this work on the 2012 Retina as well (no disc drive)?
well on the retina u cant upgrade the ram and the retina already has an ssd but if you want more space you can upgrade the ssd, for nvme you will need an adapter
thanks for the upload
Fantastic video, Tom. Thoroughly enjoyed watching it. :)
I just recommended this Machine to my brother, and it's good to know that it's easily user upgradable!
2019 still kicking like good
Your icon looked like a heavy scratch on my screen! Dude not cool! I was spent wiping it down for like a minute
Great Vid!
Glad I caught this video, I have this model. I plan to upgrade to a SSD.
Amazing vidieo just like always
2019, almost 2020 and this Macboook pro is still kicking ass.
2022 and mine is still doing what I need it to do.
Cool vid! Thanks for sharing!!!
How in gods name did i find you here tip
Great video man, really helps a lot. Getting this same Mac Pro in the mail next Monday. I wanted to know, if I do a time machine backup or even use carbon copy cloner and move all of my files from the HDD to the SSD, will the old files from the HDD conflict with the same OS files moved to the SSD?
Still using mine in 2018, slowly upgrading it
Happymonday 2015 what do you use it for
2020 still working like a boss
Good information. Thanks for this info. I learned a bit so I am happy. UPDATE: Followed your steps and I now have a MUCH faster mid 2012 Macbook pro. Used Crucial 1 TB SSD and 16 GB Crucial RAM. High Sierra OSx. Really impressive how much faster this little Mac runs. THANKS for the inspiration. Fun project.
16 Crucial ddr3 ram, can it run 2 16gb ddr ram sticks?
@@aussiedrones755 nope
@@aussiedrones755 8gb sticks at max
Thanks for the video, especially since those mid 2012 are on clearance everywhere.... the first thing I wanted to do was speed it up a bit.
Just got that model very cheaply and looking forward to do those exact two upgrades, SSD & RAM. Somewhat I enjoyed watching the whole process and narration.. haha. Hope everything got sorted out. Greetings from MX.
This is one of the amazing things with OS X. You can boot pretty much any install of the OS on any Mac (assuming that OS is supported on that particular hardware of course). This is why a number of people who travel a lot make bootable images of their system so they can plug it into another Mac on location if their machine kicks the bucket for example and carry on working.
2020 and still up an running!!!
Update to 10.10.4 and open a terminal and type: sudo trimforce enable
This will enable TRIM support for the SSD and ensure the performance stays high (and it prolongs the SSD life)
Julian Doll I'd check to see if this drive supports it properly first. Samsung drives are known for being quite poor with TRIM commands because they implemented it in the firmware in a not quite so standard way.
Using it with my 840 Pro since I got it. First with trim enabler and since 10.10.4 with trim force.
No problems, yet.
Julian Doll It's one of those things that takes time to rear its ugly head. It's also likely to only really cause problems well beyond the useful life of the drive (like when it's too small or there are far, far faster ones for great prices out), but it's worth checking up on.
@Julian Doll, @TalesOfWar How is this TRIM command 4 years later?
Never had problems. Updated to a newer ssd this month, though.
Thanks-you, still using this model. June 2017
Do you do arms workouts all day long by wrapping weights around your wrists?
I recently picked up a mid-2012 MacBook Pro, which condition looks like it just came out of the factory. I did the clone and swap of the HDD to an SSD and the Ram upgrade. I did, however, remember to reconnect my battery before I put the botton back on. I have been trying to upgrade the Catalina to Ventura using open core legacy but no matter what I do, it won't take. I still have Catalina on it -- the joys of having a backup.
Please share your feedback on performance level. I have the same laptop and planning to upgrade to SSD.
@@chandrashekharsonbar I have an 850 Gb ssd and running 8 Gb RAM. It's running Catalina and it seems to run pretty fast. Now I would like to somehow get MSOffice for Mac on it to see if it can on it.
can i ask i have hdd in this one if i replace ssd the OS of it will not remove right ?

@@bojietvlog4819 whatever you plan to do, always back up the original drive/OS before you do anything else. There are lots of good videos showing how to upgrade a max laptop. That's how I learned.
Hope jess likes the mbp and tha Mac pro gets better :'( great video seeya tomorrow :D
2019 and still kickin. Upgraded to 16GB RAM and SSD
I'm thinking of upgrading it, is there any major difference? Was it worth it?
@@MrIDGAF i got the new RAM Corsair 16GB for only $87 USD. The speed now so outstanding, and i also add SSD 128GB (i use the disc room space, pull out the disc room, we're not gonna use it anymore i guess). Voila, the toyota becomes ferrari. Lol.
@@rockazulla Wow. I really need to upgrade mine because one of the ram sticks burned out and now I'm on 4GB ram (which is crazy slow compared to the 8GB before). But I'm not sure if I should keep my i7 mid 2012 mainly because the glass of thr screen is cracked. Also a SSD is a nice upgrade to add on the list, which means Ram + SSD is £100 so I'm not sure if it's worth it for a cracked MacBook that'll cost £30 to be repaired and might fail anytime since it's now almost 6 years old. But I love the machine so much lol
@@MrIDGAF depends on how bad the crack is I guess. If you think you arent comfy anymore with the look, its time to upgrade to new Macbook. Lol. Mine also got hit on the hinge and everytime i open the tray, it feels like someone's back cracked and everyone in the room would look at me 😂🤣. However the performance still lit after the upgrade, so ... 4GB RAM wont cope anymore with any task, even if you only open mutiple tabs on safari, it would be so slow.
hope that jess had a nice birthday mate and hope things go well for you this week
i'm still using it working very well
Thanks for this video! I just want to ask is this upgrade built for gaming purpose? Like those games that does not require too much ram and memory?
Great video! I just upgraded the Ram from 4gb to 8gb now I want to upgrade the storage from 500 HDD to 500 SSD… I love this MacBook Pro so I’m upgrading it so that it can run smooth.
Please share your feedback on performance level. I have the same laptop and planning to upgrade to SSD.
“Probably getting discontinued soon”. 3 Years later from this video and 6 Years after its release, still supported by the latest macOS and still for sale on the Apple website! The greatest MacBooks out there with many more years to come. Oh, and it’s user upgradeable!!
MacOS Mojave also supported by this machine!
@@hexxoid9263 Just installed Catalina. Having speed issues so I will need to upgrade my ram. I've loved this little machine.
kat4005 Try downgrading to High Sierra (it still is supported by all latest apps) instead of spending money on ram

One ram slot of my macbook is not working from yesterday, so I am planning to go fir 8gb ram in one and only slot. Can you please suggest me amazon link to buy.
2018 still using this computer.
I have the same machine and did the upgrades you did but with an 840 EVO and 6GB of ram
great video
If you put a new SSD and remove your old hard drive where OS X is installed, will that be a problem ? Do you need to install OS X on the SSD first (if so, how) ?? Thanks !
Do a time Maschine backup first and after it has finished you can change the hdd to the ssd and if youre done you hold the alt key and start the macbook then you chose your new ssd and if it asks about the install of osx chose time Maschine backup and there you go you got new ssd in and your data is also there
@@mbp-tech2818 I can't do the time machine backup, cause i only got 1 backup hard drive thats fill with my others files😶
@@malikfajar3299 then i would suggest you to buy another hdd and then backup to that thats what i had to do otherwise i dont know another way to do it sorry
@@mbp-tech2818 well I just realized I got my 16gb sandisk mate haha my bad
It's 2020 and I'm finally going to update mine. I was super scary of changing the ram myself, but after seeing this video I see that is super easy. I plan to change to the SSD myself too, but for that I will need a little bit more research, because I am note sure how is the best way to backup, is it time machine?
Thank you for the video, you just saved my pocket.
Which brand are you take for "SSD & RAM" nd which is the best on market i wanna upgrade my mcp

can you tell me where to buy the samsung 8gb RAM?
It’s in 2019 and I’m on MacOS Catalina Beta 😊😊 and still working like a newer one 😍😍
Is yours the 9,2? Mid 2012? Did yours overheat with Catalina with indexing of spotlight?
Thomas Cox mine is not overheating, maybe because the battery is new I guess?
JJIPR25 absolutely not. The battery has nothing to do with that. Like with Catalina, or any operating system instal that’s not a clean instal did the machine show any apps using significant energy ?
I've got the Late 2011 MacBook Pro 13" (i5 @2.4GHz), the previous model. I put in a 240GB Sandisk SSD. Got the SSD on special, would have liked the 480GB, but I couldn't refuse the 240GB at the price it was offered. I was able to fit 16GB of RAM, I bought the correct type made by Samsung. 8GB is the "official" limit, but 16GB works perfectly. Fresh install of the latest OSX (10.11.5) and the thing boots in 20-seconds flat.
I like these MacBook Pros because they are upgradable. I am hoping to get an i7 version (second hand) maybe next year and do a similar upgrade, but for now I'm focussing on the newly-acquired "cheese-grater" Mac Pro I got cheap.
Hey you know you could of bought a 512GB SSD on ebay for about $100.00, thats how I got mine. It was used but it was all I could afford, anyways it works great in my early 2011 macbook pro 13.
I have the 2011 15" (i7 @2.4Ghz, radeon 6770m). I put 16 GB of ram in, and two 250 GB SSDs in raid0. Unbelievable speed.
Wow thats real neat! I have been debating on raiding the two storage drives (2TB HDD an 512GB SSD) in my mid 2012 MacBook pro 15 inch but I decided to keep the drives as their own separate drives so if one fails all the data isnt gone just part of it. The 15 inch MBP I am talking about was broke, my friend ending up giving it to me because he said he wanted nohting to do with it and if I fixed it I could keep it so long story short I fixed it (spent about $330.00 all together for it) and now its up an running great!
I've fixed up a few of these for my friends. The main problem is that hard disks really only have a working life of about 5 years. The other problem is that 4gb of RAM just isn't enough these days.

Thank so much for this video. I am ready to do this upgrade friend. I was wondering if I could do 16gb of RAM instead of 8? Thanks in advance for the advice.

Awesome video and awesome upgrade. I can't help but ask out of curiosity - when you say "a little bit clueless as to what my computer situation is like at the moment", is the Hackintosh not working out as hoped?
His Mac pro broke during the shipping
2020 still going!
How long did it take for your Mac to boot up after? Mine shows the Mac logo and a bar underneath. The bar is full but it’s still not moving forward. I think I may have installed the RAM incorrectly but it seemed to be inserted ok.
just noticed you have an outro!! nice!
I currently have a non-retina Macbook. I bought 8gb of ram and also 256 SSD ADATA. I changed the drive and the ram, and it was succesfully installed. But i'm noticing something: the machine overheats and also the battery won't last the 5 hours.
I do web development on this machine only.
I have mine with 1 TB SSD, swapped out the optical drive for an additional 180 GB SSD and upgraded the RAM to 16GB. As long as I'm not gaming, it's perfect.
have any links to the stuff you bought? Trying to resurrect my mac pro but so far I've only got the RAM up to 16GB.
Do you happen to have a link to the RAM you bought? I’ve searched on eBay but there are so many on there! Many thanks! James
I have the i7 model 16GB 256GB 850 PRO, smooth machine, sold my retina MacBook Pro 13", I hated the UI Lag..
I just purchased a Macbook for $540 with a new hard drive however the hard drive isn't quite what I need. This was very informative. Hoping to do some tinkering and swap out for a larger hard drive.
Sandar.very good .you are a realy good . Thanks.
Should you format the previous 500GB Hardrive if replacing it with a SATA?
Will it effect the bootup when you turn it on after installing the SATA?
even right now 2019 I upgraded it to Mojave and it works so great! i7 8 gig 750hdd
Brian Luceno what memory did you upgrade it to?
Bani jasso i only updated to mojave
Are you going to do a 10.11 video ?
After an upgrade, does a MacBook Pro support later upgrades? Or does it get stuck to the same latest OS-update as previous to the upgrade?
Are you from East London? You talks like my friend there. By the way, you like this Mac Screen better or the new Retina? Which one make your eyes feel better?
Nice people making CZcams Better :) God Bless!!
Great video! I bought my mid-2012 Macbook Pro in 2013 and it's still running great but it gets a little bit slow when I open many Adobe programs at the same time (can't blame it though). I want to upgrade its RAM to 16GB but I'm a little bit nervous about doing the whole process by myself. Plus Idk if the brand Corsair is a good one for RAM. Does anyone know it?
I'm working on photoshop, illustrator & premiere pro. should i buy this model? which can upgrade the ram & ssd to the max. I'm on tight budget. need an opinion
yes. not only can you find good deals you can upgrade later on. as long as you have and hmdi to plug into a larger screen (for adobe products) you'll be fine.
2020 still working like a boss 😎
Did you upgrade ram and SSD ??
Vikash Kumar i just have an SSD as the primary drive to boot os and SSHD as secondary drive. Haven’t upgraded the ram yet. But that’ll definitely boost the performance of the macbook. I run Logic Pro X and it work’s well. Obviously doesn’t run vst’s like Omnisphere as they require a lot of memory.
Many Thanks !
So I have this same Mac and was thinking about buying the new macbook pro but thanks to this video I think I’ll upgrade instead. Why did you upgrade to 8 instead of 16? I looked at the “memory upgrade instructions” and says that you can upgrade to 8Gb but some people here are claiming they went with 16Gb instead. Also for the storage I have 500gb sata disk, I see you updated that too but lower. I don’t understand that part.
I’m going to upgrade my MacBook pro 2012 from 4gb 500ssd to 16gb and 500ssd. Will it be faster? Do you think I can edit videos in premiere pro or final cut?
I love the screwdriver? It was my favorite part of the video
do you use logic pro X on it? will logic pro X work good on this mac pro? I'm thinking to buy, thanks in advance.
I’ve only ever used windows. Do you need to do a clone of the HD to the new SSD before installing the SSD?
Or do you just replace the drive & the Mac reinstalls the operating system etc.
I currently have this exact model. I only need a RAM upgrade. If i was to simply to switch RAM would there be any other steps i would have to take? Or is it just a simple switching of the RAM?
Great tutorial! 2012 now has 1tb SSD and 16g ram :)
Hii.. which SATA type ssd will be compatible???
Does it support 1tb Samsung 860 pro SATA 3
Hey there! I've just buy 2x8gb and SSD, does it really worth going to Mojave? Maybe Catalina or not? Regards!
Could you just upgrade the Mac (mid2012) with the 8gb of RAM, and see a difference? What's the benefit of upgrading the 500gb HD into a SSD?
You would see a difference upgrading to 8GB of RAM, but you would have more benefits changing the HDD into a SSD. Faster bootup time, applications load up much faster, etc. I upgraded to 16 GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD. Completely worth it.
@@noeagosto9231 if I install a new SSD will I need a USB to install the new ios? I’m assuming it will be all formatted, that’s the part I’m stuck on before I do this upgrade
@@chriseh7 I don’t know what the answer is. Sorry. I cloned my HDD to my SSD using Carbon Copy Cloner, and kept the same MacOS.
SSD is a lot faster than HDD
Hello there, I have the same model macbook pro. I am a little hesitant about upgrading to SSD because I am relatively new it doing anything like this. Would you say it is worth it to upgrade the RAM alone for 4GB to 16GB? What difference would it make? I want to upgrade because boot up is pretty slow for me along with apps opening. Sorry if those questions are dumb. I am technological inept! Great Video! Hope she loves her gift!
New to Mac and planning to change to ssd and up the ram to 8. Do I need 2 new 4gb ram or just buy 1 since there's an existing 4gb already?
Do you recommend this mac book pro (2012) still? Even if its almost 2016? Thanks!
+theZhaianneMode I currently use it to date! What are you looking to use it for?
+Ron Harvey i'm wondering the same. I don't like the fact the new onws can't be upgraded
+Masterglitcher567 again it sort of depends what you use it for. I also use a PC I built primarily for all my video editing/photo processing, etc. However, I use my MacBook Pro when on the go. It's holding up quite well! I upgraded it to El Capitan recently (clean install) and it's still performing fine. However I noticed that apps and the Max itself are a little bit slower to boot up. I'm upgrading the standard 500GB HDD it came with to a 250GB SSD. I've already upgraded the RAM to 8GB. I'll just use an external hard drive for all my files after that. I'm sure it'll fix that boot up issue. I've had no problems using premiere pro and such with it though. The only thing is render times are a bit longer and the display is a little small but other than that it's fine. Hope this somewhat helps!
+Ron Harvey Certainly this helps. I want this for on the go too, editing videos, photoshop, illustrator, coding and such. Thank you for your help.
+Ron Harvey i just bought it.. Im so happy.. Cant wait to upgrade it to SSD. best buy i ever made

when i buy the ssd and dont want the old datas? can i put in the ssd and install osx from the macbook?
I’ve never heard of a 4 TB Hard Drive, but is it possible to max out on the Hard Drive? It would be great for DJs... Amazon has a 2.5-inch 2TB SSD from SanDisk [its an Ultra 3D NAND SATA III], I’m thinking about doubling with such upgrade. Is it worth it? Or are there limitations?
