The bells of Montescheno (Verbania, Italy) are still rung by the village bellringers; fortunately, no modern technological mechanism has come to ruin the tradition of this magnificent village, where everything is still happy and works better than elsewhere. The bell tower has six bells, three of which were originally cast in 1792 in Varese. The other bells have been added or recast over the years. In this video, the five largest bells are rung by bellringers, who still use a widespread ancient technique of high cultural and musical value. The true tradition is presented here.
Bells 2+3+6 are original; bell number 5 was recast in 1999, while bell number 4 was recast in 1883. Bell number 1, the smallest, was donated in 2008. The concert is sung in E major.
Montescheno is famous because it is home to the oldest procession in the Alps, which started in 1602 to fight and defeat the plague. From that day on the third Sunday in July, people walk 22 km with 1700 metres of altitude difference in about 18 hours, including the final Mass that is celebrated in the parish church, built in 1600 after the village was divided from the main church of Seppiana, which dates back to the 11th century.
