    I'm 22 years old and a MacGyver fanboy. About a decade ago, I was recommended the show by someone who thought it would be up my alley. I guess they were right because I watched the whole series when it was on Netflix. Back then, I thought MacGyver was the type of protagonist someone my age should look up to. He had a good heart and moral compass, was intelligent and educated, and he always tried to avoid violence, even when people were trying to kill him or his friends. Richard Dean Anderson was always a delightful screen presence and the show had a good cast of recurring characters, from loyal friend and boss Pete Thornton, the comedic and conning Jack Dalton, the lovable Penny Parker, and the villainous Murdoc. I watched the MacGyver reboot as well and while I liked it, it just didn't have the same magic. This is just a reminder: As long as we remember, some shows will never truly die.

    When I was a kid in the early 90's, I had an old TV with bunny ears antenna. When the antenna broke and could no longer pick up a signal, I "MacGyvered" my own antenna by linking together paper clips into a chain, stuck one end into the coaxial cable port and linked a wire clothes hanger to the other end, which I hung from the wall. Not only did it work, but it picked up a better signal than the bunny ears.

    I think the thing that I enjoy most about MacGyver in retrospect, is his non-lethal approach to his conflicts. Back in the 80s, heroes killing badguys was kind of standard operating procedures. Sure TV prohibited actually killing people, so shows like the A-Team would hit everwhere BUT the badguys, but we all know it was meant to be them killing the enemy combatants. They certainly weren't afraid of firing at other living people. But MacGyver had a very strict, no guns policy. And the fact that he found ways to use his brain, and be an INTELLIGENT hero, instead of just a gun toting hero, made for a much better rolemodel than most give him credit for.

      He wasn't willing to as much as carry a gun, but improvised explosives were cool. Those explosions not hurting anyone were every bit as ridiculous as theA-Team gunplay not hurting anyone. That's Hollywood moralizing, and I don't mean that with a positive connotation. It is cool that his character's name has become a verb. That's gotta be quite the badge of honor as far as fiction writing goes.

Funko Pop released his Mcgyver pop vinyl coincidently few months before. I got him to sign it and i paid to pose with him for a picture. He was super sweet person and i took a pic with him. We both hugged each other and took a pic together. I will always remember meeting him and talking to him about how McGyver got me interested in Science as a child. He was very sweet and listening to everyone that spoke to him. He did refuse to sign swiss army knifes as there was a sign that said he wont sign knifes. I am sure he gets asked that alot but doesnt do it for his safety. I am glad i took the bus to Rhode Island just to see him. This was before the pandemic so i am happy i didnt wait. The reboot was a fun show, but it forgot one of the key elements of MacGyver. The original MacGyver was well researched and occasionally had to dial it back because their DIY stuff really worked. The reboot was just another fluff piece that spewed stuff that really wasn't valid in order to make a presentation like every other show these days. Combine that with the shortened show-time in an hour these days and it really is just another cliff-note dime-a-dozen show using the name "Macgyver".
    The TV breaks between the add-space these days makes all these shows fluffed half hour 'Suggestions' of stories.

One side effect of this is that often they make big discoveries that they never mention again, as such these discoveries don’t have the impact that you’d realistically think they should have on the crew or society at large. The other thing is that the characters go through an insane amount of events that should have more lasting impacts on their psyches. In other shows, so many world crimes or world ending events happen in a city that you’d think everyone shouldp just evacuate it.

    That “airplane out of bamboo” was really an ultralight aircraft, the Quicksilver MX, which came in a kit you put together. The company that made the kits had a cool name, EipperFormance. I made one back in 1981 and flew it around Phoenix. Really nice, stable airplane.

    I wish reboot would have had some non-agent episodes. With new MacGyver show every episode was spy stuff. Original MacGyver most of the episodes were more regular stuff like helping local folk against local criminals.

    In Johannesburg in South Africa, back in the mid-80’s when MacGyver was at its height, young white girls (that was why it was reported) started disappearing. Then the sixth abducted girl turned up. She escaped because she watched MacGyver. According to her she thought ‘What would MacGyver do?” and she kept calm and used stuff she found where she was kept to escape. The abductors committed suicide before their arrest so nothing is known of their motives or what happened to the girls. But basically MacGyver saved this girl’s life and stopped more abductions.

    That character is responsible for more STEM kids than Sagan and Hawking combined in the US. That may make the rest of the world shudder, but at the end of the day, does it matter your motivation so long as it's given? We don't balk at Superman when he's a Boy Scout. They teach us how to see the world in a better way. MacGyver was most certainly one of those characters.

    Cute video, but there are two things I wish had been included: 1) The fact that MacGyver's jury-rigged creations and solutions were all researched and verified (in other words, more scientifically accurate than not), and 2) The FLASH GORDON actor who portrayed the titular character is Sam J. Jones. What may have sounded like a cute "ha-ha" moment in the script was ultimately disrespectful. A LOT of fans watched and loved that movie, and Jones accomplished more with that role than most actors do with a lifetime of work behind them. He deserves to be more than a snarky back-handed punchline. Next time, give credit where it's due (or at least edit THIS video to put Jones' name onscreen).

    • @thealexanderllanos
      @thealexanderllanos Před 3 měsíci

      One could argue that you are being overly and unnecessarily snarky..... but I won't. Actually as I watched, the thought that came to mind was, "This script is very simplistic, and that Jones comment was not cool."

My forman was intrigued how I came up with this and I mentioned this TV show. Many of these experiments actually work! And since then created some of my own ideas off the cuff. People began nik naming me MacGyver.
