  • On this video I am talking about the Canon XL1 Mini DV camcorder which I consider one of the best functioning cameras that Canon ever made. I remember being on holiday on Kangagroo Island once and a fellow tourist said,"Now that's a real camera!" I did promise to do a video using this camera as a vlogging camera. I did do that and there were a few issues that I would like to work on before I post that. Sometimes one gets sidetracked. Everything worked fine it was just getting it successfully to imovie and then to youtube where I got lost a bit..As a further update on my XL1 I decided to take it to a repair shop as the camera had some problems in record mode. It played back old tapes reasonably well with a question as to whether it would continue to do so. The repair shop said there was nothing they could do as parts that were needed were unavailable. So I took it home and decided to try recording on a tape I had and it is working fine at the moment. You can be lucky sometimes.I have just added some video on the link below of my coverage of Amateur Boxing.
    Note: My son Daniel works for Rising Sun Pictures in Adelaide.

    Hi Geoff, I still have mine as well. I shot a lot of local music content with mine back around 1999/2000. I started a public access television program around 1999 and decided to buy this camera to improve the image quality of my footage. Great camera and I still have not found a camera with better ergonomics. My Blackmagic cinema cameras definitely provide a much better image and more fun in DaVinci Resolve today but the XL1 is one of my favorite cameras that I have ever owned - doubt I'll ever sell it.

      Thanks Chris. It is still a great camera and I still have mine.I nearly bought a similar hardly used Xl1 kit about a year ago but I could not justify it in the end even though the price was a steal. cheers Geoff

    Thanks for the video. Just got an xl1 today at a garage sale for $50. My cousin had one in early 2000s while in film school and I was always amazed by it. Can't wait to play around with it.

      Thanks Nick. $50, that's amazing if it is working properly. I paid a small fortune for mine plus accessories.I have just been watching some old recordings from mine about half an hour ago and the quality is pretty good and still stands up.This camera also helped my youngest son get established in his career. He still works in the movie industry and from here in Adelaide has worked on some of the big movies as a lighting and cg expert.cheers geoff.

    The XL1 was my dream camera when it came out. I finally got one last week from eBay and it’s absolutely amazing. I haven’t had this much fun with a camera in a long time, even if the picture quality isn’t as good as a phone.

    Great review, Geoff--thanks! Your Canon XL1 brings back a lot of memories for me. I bought its "little brother," the Canon GL1, in October of 2000 and used it for over ten years filming
    our four children's birthdays, sports and other family events, plus high school football, basketball and soccer, and also with about a dozen weddings. I also owned the Canon Elura (first version), Ultura and Optura XI--also Mini DV camcorders. But my GL1 was my workhorse, and I still have it, although the recording heads are worn out. I replaced it with a Canon XH-A1S camcorder in 2010 and used it for ten years, along with a Canon HV-30, until, again, the heads wore out last year. Last July, I purchased two Canon-refurbished GX10s, which do everything I need and I just finished a corporate video with them. Like you, I have many boxes of Mini DV tapes. I'm retired now and am currently working on transferring all of the video on those tapes to hard drives. Thanks again and take care!

      Thanks for your comments Craig. It was a great camera and mine is working for the moment.I looked at your youtube channel. Some great work covering the high school footy team.I am just about to order a decent 8mm film projector as I have lots of old movie films to digitize and all my old projectors died from unuse. My kids used to play lacrosse at one stage and I took heaps of videos of their games including and A grade grand final years ago that I intend to put on youtube when I get around to it. Too many projects! Just now frustrated as I got out my prize minolta 9000 film slr and I can't get the batteries to boot up the camera. Was working fine not all that long ago. Thanks for subscribing. Geoff

      Thanks for your comments. Yes a beautiful camera. I am fortunate I was able to get a few new tapes a couple of years ago. It’s like having an unexpired Kodachrome
      Film but I can still use them. Cheers. Geoff.

    I totally agree with preferring a standalone camcorder. I recently went through all my old mini DV tapes, and realized in the process that I haven't shot video like that in years, despite carrying round a smartphone with what is on a paper a better video camera built in. If you have a camcorder, you shoot videos. If you don't, well you probably don't so much. And looking back now those videos are priceless.
    Thanks for the vid!

      Thanks Gerry for your comments and subscription. Just last night I was looking at a favorite family holiday I captured on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. Brought back wonderful memories and also that back then it was a digital movie camera and film still cameras. My movie stuff took precedent over the stills. Now with todays technology I seem to do things the other way round.I might put up some edited vision from my Kangaroo Island tapes. You definitely notice it's not the high definition we get now.So I am still hanging out to get a decent digital stand alone movie camera.I have included a link to a song "Braving the Day" by my son's then band shot back in 2003. It was shot with 2 handheld mini dv cameras. Pretty good quality I reckon.

    What the difference between the canon xl1 and canon xl1s do know which one to get

    • @pembridgehouse
      @pembridgehouse  Před 3 lety

      Hi. Thanks for your question. Probably not a lot of difference but I would get the Xl1s because it was supposed to be an upgrade on the Xl1. I thought about buying a local XL1s recently. There was then also an XL2. All good cameras back then. Here is a link to a review I found by Dirck Halstead. digitaljournalist.org/issue0109/cameracorner.htm cheers Geoff

      @@40mmmm23 I have never used a canon GL2 but it looks to do a similar job to the XL1. Depending on what you wan the camera for I would prpbably stay with the GL2.The footage I have looked at on you tube is comparable to the XL1 and it has good features.
