    The real tragedy of that Pokémon episode is that it was Pikachu that caused the seizures, yet Porygon got blamed and hasn't appeared in an episode since because of it!

    • @jessehammer123
      @jessehammer123 Před měsícem +31

      Well, they weren’t going to punish Pikachu! And Porygon was in the name of the episode, so Porygon became the face of the issue even though it was Pikachu.

    • @SageArdor
      @SageArdor Před měsícem +41

      More used as a scapegoat than outright blamed. They couldn't ban Pikachu because that was the de facto mascot of Pokémon, so Porygon was made to take the heat due to that episode being its only appearance.

    If you have not seen it, videos of the 11ft 8 bridge are highly amusing. The drivers of the trucks whose tops get peeled seem to fall in to two categories - one set thinks "if I go really fast I can squeeze under" and the other set thinks "If I go really slow I can squeeze under" - both are wrong of course. It's in North Carolina, not Virginia, btw. I also suggest a search for Tunnelvision by Blue Sky in Columbia, SC, which as far as I know is still there. It is a painting of a road tunnel on the side of a building.

    • @rolfs2165
      @rolfs2165 Před měsícem +15

      The thing I really don't get about the bridge, before the intersection is a thing that will knock against the truck's roof if it's to tall for the bridge. And people still think they can make it. If it were up to me, anyone hitting that bridge would lose their license and be deemed unfit to drive for life by this point.

    • @widicamdotnet
      @widicamdotnet Před měsícem +12

      @@rolfs2165 My interpretation is this: There are sensors that switch the lights to red at the intersection directly before the bridge if a truck approaching is too tall. This is meant to give the drivers time to realize the flashing (and badly worded, imo) "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" signage is about them. But some drivers instead notice the lights go red earlier than expected, instinctively accelerate to still get across the intersection, and in doing so, stop thinking about their vehicle's height. In any case, love to see that channel post ;-)

      Thanks for the Tunnelvision pointer. Pretty cool mural. Note that the mural is at one end of a parking lot and the parking lot has a direction of flow opposite that of the tunnel’s arrows. So the only people who would be driving toward the imaginary road would already have ignored the painted arrows in the real world, and deserve their fate.

      I figured if it wasn't one of those 3D chalk drawings where you have to stand in a specific spot to see the effect and that spot happened to be in the middle of the road because that would be bad, I figured it was a type of trompe-l'œil [thanks to Reading Rainbow for teaching me that one]. The mention of a cartoon character narrowed it down like a big arrow sign on a stick.

    It’s the 11-8 bridge in my city, Durham, NC!
    Hasn’t been raised because it carries train tracks; both the physical engineering challenges and bureaucratic complexity prevent any meaningful change.
    Edit: looks like they possibly lowered the roadbed in or around 2020, it’s now the 12-4 bridge. Still a can opener, just not nearly as frequently.

    • @darthbob88
      @darthbob88 Před měsícem +4

      AFAIK, the bridge hasn't been raised because the railroad owns it and they don't care enough to go through the effort, and the roadbed can't be lowered too far because there's a sewer pipe under it.

    problem with the mural is it doesn't even have to look realistic. It could be cartoony and terrible, but put together the right conditions (somebody new to the area, low light, bad weather) and you're guaranteed an accident because you realize too late it's not a tunnel.

    I'm from Brazil (but not Juazeiro): there were several posts shared online with two pictures, one of the "tunnel" and the other from a smashed car front, leading people to think that an accident happened because of it. It never did, but the picture of the painting in the post was taken at night, and it was realistic just enough to convince your brain for a split second, enough for a driver to do a mistake, raising the city hall's concerns and leading to it being removed.

    I wish the Chicago mural would have come up in this conversation. There was a building that painted important people in the 1990's and it was right along the side of a raised highway. They would change the people every few months and included people like Michael Jordan. The last straw that got it banned was Dennis Rodman where they added a section above the top of the building for his hair so they could keep changing the color. This led to many rubber-neck traffic jams and accidents.

    I'm from Brazil. This happened near end of 2015. That painting wall was viral here when they made a montage with a crashed car into it.
    Even I though it was a real accident until I saw this video and gone after the facts about it
    After the accident photo went viral, the government covered with white paint for safety measure. The painting is easily identified at day but at night its harder.
    The painter is a teacher Clarissa Campelo, she had authorization from the city hall to make such a painting.
    She said: "City Hall knew I was going to make a tunnel painting at that spot. I was invited by the City Hall Cultural Administratio. What happened was lack of communication. And the drawing was only erased because of the hoax on social networks about the fake accident"
    She also said: "This solution has too drastic, because it was a lot of work to make that drawing depicting the cartoon world. I was pretty sad because the drawing was not even that much realistic. They could had reached me before. I think that the drawing wasnt posing any threat. They should had placed a sign at the spot. Didn't think this could be this controversial."
    She also had an assistant.

    Form a copyright perspective, they could put Steamboat Willie Mickey up there, but they probably would get in trouble from the trademark side. You might have noticed that Disney, several years ago, started having their studio branding/logo at the start of their films be based on a clip of the Steamboat Willie version of Mickey. This likely was an attempt to establish that version of Mickey as a trademark for the company, thus maintaining some legal control over that version of the character.
    Would that work? No idea. I doubt any similar legal scenario has ever happened. But it definitely feels like a deliberate strategy.

Disney, seeing the possibility that the copyright might not get extended again, started using a clip of Mickey from Steamboat Willie as their company's trademark, in order to try to make anyone else using that version of Mickey a violation of trademark law, since it would no longer be a violation of copyright law.

      They would definitely get in trouble on the trademark side for this because it is exactly the sort of situations that trademark was set up for. These weren't some small murals in the daycares, these were massive exterior murals advertising three daycares that the city actually had already fined the the daycares for because they were so big they counted as billboards.

      @johnomeara7240 Disney didn't even attempt to extend copyright this time, it had nothing to do with the Florida governor. In fact I'm actually working on a video concerning the two prior copyright extensions and I was shocked to discover that Disney may not have had really anything to do with them. Make no mistake Disney was *trying* to get copyright extended in the 70s and 90s, but from my research it seems like they actually failed in their attempts. It was actually unconnected 3rd parties that really got the ball rolling and made it happen. However when newspapers at the time were looking for ways to explain the situation they used Mickey Mouse as the example and thus cemented the connection in people's minds. It's kinda a Murder on the Orient Express situation where Disney was like the 6th passenger to stab the murder victim. They were kinda responsible but it is a big stretch to say they had the lead role.

    In Boston on moving day, you will always have a rental truck hitting the bridge. It is called Storrowed (after Storrow drive). Basically a whole bunch of first year students come into town and they drive a rental truck, so they are unfamiliar with the city and unfamiliar with the truck....

    I suspect that the Disney character mural that was referred to as being painted over wasn't painted over because of Disney's copyright claims. - It was painted over at the order of the Tory Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick because it was "Too Welcoming" at a Children's Asylum Centre for unaccompanied child refugees.

    The last couple of years Disney has been using the Steamboat Willie Mickey has their animation logo. I do wonder if they've trademarked that and would chase TM violations.

    Here in Copenhagen, we have the issue of a clinic advertising breast enlargement operations with a set of nice boobs on busses.
    Now the danish are not prudish, and public nudity is not a huge issue.
    But for me personally, it is a safety issue. If i cycle past, i will turn my head, and thats not a good idea in traffic. And im pretty sure im not the only one.
    And of course it also adds to the whole body perfection problem, that drives many people to unnecessary surgery, and/or mental issues.

    Be aware of your surroundings!
    Paying attention is a double edged sword, both generally (as in life, relationships, religion, politics, etc.) and specifically while driving. Too much attention to a simple distraction or worse, an illusion, can produce catastrophic effects. Not enough attention to signage and warnings can range from runaway speed on steep grades to the can opener (you must check it out if you are not already familiar).
    Paying attention to cyclists and pedestrians can not be understated.
    Please stay aware.
