In the blue~ his best color! I've always thought it was the most honoring thing for Elvis to continue to have his Daddy travel with him, even until or after Vernon became ill. He had so much respect for his parents❤ Still being just that humble boy from Tupelo that loved his family.

Elvis was born in 1935 and would be 88 now if he hadn't died in 1977. There are a lot of impersonators as well that look and sound a bit like Elvis. They are not him.
In 6 YEARS and ONE MONTH from that interview, ELVIS WAS TAKEN FROM US by PARKER and Dr Nick.
Not only did the Colonel keep him in the states where he could control him, but he didn't want anyone or group to offer any opportunities for Elvis. He was afraid of losing the golden goose. Did you know that Elvis got so many offers for serious movie parts and the Colonel secretly turned them down? John Wayne wanted Elvis for "True Grit", Robert Mitchum wanted him for "Thunder Road", famous director Elia Kazan wanted him for "The Rainmaker", and of course as the movie said and Elvis found out because of the media, was Barbara Streisand wanted him for "A Star is Born".. And the worse of all, Queen Elizabeth wanted to meet him, and the Colonel refused her offer.

Okay so real quick: Elvis was not being sued. The reporter was asking Elvis about a suit filed by Nashville songwriters against certain music publishing firms/ houses in Nashville, Tennessee. No one was however bringing a lawsuit against Elvis's publishing music firms (of which there were a total of 4: Elvis Presley Music, Gladys Music, Whitehaven Music, and Elvis Music; Whitehaven is the neighborhood in Memphis that Graceland is located in; also in 1972 on February 15 a Federal music copyright law was passed; before this the copyrights of music recorded on phonograph were only protected by state laws, not Federal; and in this year of 1972 State Highway 51 was renamed Elvis Presley Boulevard).

I have to say this too: Today is the 69th Anniversary of when Elvis Presley performed for the first, and the last time, at the Grand Ole Opry:

To begin: The night was a warm and balmy Nashville, Tennessee one (I know because I looked up the weather records and it was a 70 degrees with no clouds or precipitation) when a 19 year old Elvis Presley played at the Grand Ole Opry just once: Saturday, October 2, 1954. It was about two and a half months after the release of his first single for Sun Records, "That's All Right".
Though skeptical that Presley's brand of country would sit well with the Opry, the show's manager, Jim Denny, allowed one song on the 10:15 segment hosted by Hank Snow (a country music artist): the singer's B- side, "Blue Moon Of Kentucky".
By all accounts, Presley and his band- Scotty Moore on electric guitar and Bill Black on standup bass- did not electrify the audience. But backstage many folks were kind to Presley and his boys, including Bill Monroe, the writer of "Blue Moon Of Kentucky", who complimented his recording of Monroe's bluegrass country tune.
Years later, when asked about Presley's cover, Monroe would remark: "They was powerful checks. Powerful checks."
Today Jim Denny, Bill Monroe, Hank Snow, and Elvis Presley are all members of the Country Music Hall Of Fame.

According to Kathy Westmoreland, who was the "high soprano" of Elvis's back up singing group and also for a a certain amount of time (though not too long a time I think) Elvis's girlfriend. She said in an old article interview I found that, when asked why Elvis didn't talk about politics on a public platform, something to the effect of, "Elvis was a Christian. He truly believed what the Bible said on God giving Mankind free will. Elvis was very aware of how his opinions might sway others and he didn't want that. He wanted people to go by their own personal opinions on things. Not base their thoughts or votes on what he thought or said."
She also went to say that yes, Elvis, did vote. He voted every election. But who he voted for he kept to himself.
He didn't broadcast his political views because that his own choice he made.
Far be it from me, a little miss nobody to tell anyone how to choose or what choice is best or what to think or how to be.
And that is as political as you will ever get me to get here 😝

This is the year I saw Elvis in concert twice. Once in Kansas before he was in NY for this interview and then later that year in Arizona. I was one of his very young fans since I was 10 turning 11.

Hey Vinny, do you have something you could send to a life-long Elvis Fan, who got to see him once in Houston, TX, but I was so sick I couldn’t even Try to get his autograph! That just broke my heart to be so close but so far away! To make matters worse, all the things I bought were packed away in a box and there was a leak…need I say more? When he died, my mother called me so I wouldn’t hear it on television, I was pregnant and she was afraid I’d get so upset I’d go into early labor. I can’t imagine why you’d want to give your Elvis memorabilia away but if you are, I’d Love to have something anything. I forgot to tell you that I raised my daughter to be a fan also. I’m not sure how we can exchange information, I’m not real familiar with CZcams, but if you think you might want to do it, if you can reply to this comment and I’ll try to figure something out. He was so shy and humble
When Elvis said it was hard to find good material, it was about publishing rights. All these singer/songwriters came out in the late 60's/70's and they wanted to keep their own songs and they wouldn't sign publishing rights over to the Colonel, as he demanded. His outdated business practices stifled Elvis creatively in more ways than we'll ever know, and the quality of the songs Elvis was offered in later years was one. Prime example, Elvis wanted to sing Dolly Parton's song 'I Will Always Love You', but the Colonel demanded publishing so she turned him down. She was devastated that Elvis couldn't sing her song, but she made the right decision for her, imagine the royalties she would have missed out on if she had of caved!
And, what Elvis did by covering writers songs, led to so much success for those artists. Gave them some deserved recognition and opened some doors. Don’t let anyone try to convince anyone that writers didn’t want Elvis to record their material.
Such a humble and attentive man, listening carefully to every question asked. Typical press trying to trick him into saying something controversial! Elvis always answers honestly and with consideration.
Elvis did actually touch down in Prestwick, Great Britain on his way back from his 2 years in the US Army. It was supposed to be a secret but word got out and he spent that hour meeting fans and signing autographs. IMO Parker organised the Satellite show in Hawaii to pacify Elvis into thinking he was entertaining the world without having to travel.

There is a story I've heard of Elvis making a secret trip to Great Britain, and doing an anonymous whirlwind tour of the country with - I believe - Cliff Richards. Just tourism, no shows. If I remember correctly, Richards only spoke about it recently, but I can't run down the article. I wonder if Elvis' passport is at Graceland, and if it would show such a thing?
Elvis was so brilliant as far as being around reporters and in the entertainment industry. He knew when someone wanted to start something and/or was trying to get a reaction from him, positive or negative. Overall that fame he had, he was able to stay humble and answer all questions quickly on his feet even when it got to social issues and or his peers. I wish current people in the "entertainment" industry would shut their big traps and just do what they are there to do and not sure their biases and personal political and social views to themselves. Nothing worst than going to a show to enjoy yourself and the "artists" feels they have to share their social beliefs and promote it to the people who paid hard earned money to hear unrelated matters.
LOL...Elvis is the King of interviews. Another crown upon his head. You are correct. I had not seen it that way even though i wrote about how brilliant he was. Now, just to add a bit of history during this interview. The question at the time was a very sensitive situation at the time with the Vietnam War into full swing and college students and others protesting our involvement in the war. Also, if we recall, Muhammad Ali had been drafted and he said No that he would not fight someone else's greed in the war and did not go and the U.S. govt began to prosecute him and eventually was not allowed to box. Let's also remember, Elvis and Ali knew and respected each other. and so Elvis was well aware of what choice and the issues Ali was going through or had gone through by this time.
💯 Elvis was the King of interviews. even when a just started out, just a baby! he had a knack for it, he just instinctively knew how to deal with the press. he wouldn't stand to be disrespected yet he would always, always be respectful himself. he is so naturally smart and skilled, also 💯 these press conferences and interviews should be required viewing for any entertainer coming up in the business, and anyone (so many!) who still need to be schooled. this is a Master Class!

His manager was not allowed to leave USA or never be allowed to come back because of his passport or he would be arrested for his crimes. That is the only reason Elvis was never allowed to play outside of the USA. But yet he is still known by the entire world
The Col was not restricted from traveling, but he was afraid if he did they might find out he was wanted back home.

They did record the audio of 2 of the shows professionally. Unfortunately there's only amateur footage, but some of it is really great. Search for Elvis Afternoon in the garden dvd.
I think this is your best reaction. I loved watching how much love and respect you have for the man we all love. There is no feeling that is describable when it comes to watching Elvis. He stayed true to himself and his fans. He loved his fans like they was family. And we will love him forever and stay true to him.

I read that Elvis was a little skeptical about returning to New York. In the late 50s when he visited NYC for the first time he had a lot of backlash about his performing style and quickly became controversial in the media. He had his reservations about how he would then be accepted in Nyc after 10+years. He was received with open arms at MSG, selling out all his shows there, they even added an extra date.

Great interview. I recommend you read a book titled "Destined to Die Young" by Sally A. Hoedel. She did a genealogy search of his parents' families. It is very revealing and explains so much about Elvis. There are some difficult truths in there, but it made me love him and respect him even more. He was unique in more ways than just his looks and talent. Keep up the good work. I also enjoy your videos of Eminem. As always, we remember you Elvis, and we love you...still. (Judy C.)
As others said, that was a master class and blueprint on how to endear oneself to others. Primarily because his manner was sincere and not contrived. In another respect, he had more charisma than any 10 movie super stars combined. He could have said practically any damn thing and his popularity wouldn’t have waned. Elvis was just a good dude. That comes through in everything I’ve ever seen him do. From concert footage, rehearsals and press conferences. God dropped the mic when he made Elvis. And he hasn’t picked it up since.

Maybe you don't understand what Elvis represented to us. I'm from Brazil and i grew up with him. He teached us humility, being humble, being nice, good humor, love everybody no matter what. "He's not an actor"
A lot of people do not know this, including many fans, but Elvis' dream from the time he was a child was to be a famous movie actor. The only reason he got out of acting was because they wouldn't put him in good movies with good scripts but instead those stupid travelogs where they made him sing increasingly bad songs. It made him very unhappy so he couldn't wait until his contract expired to get away from Hollywood.

@@sopala3952 For sure. But the scripts and songs went downhill. Parker and the studios only cared about making money and the fans only cared about watching him sing on the big screen. So his dream of being a serious actor was never realized.
Eventually will run out of reactions for Elvis but highly recommend relistening some of the same songs but sung in different years along with Live vs Studio he always switched up the song and added a new twist every time
When Elvis did do press conferences he answered all questions, he diychange the subject like everyone else. It might not ne the answer they wanted, but alot of their questions were ridiculous or trying to get him to say something that gave them a headline to make him look bad! A few thoughts:
"Leon" did a great job piecing this interview together from various sources. That's why some parts have subtitles others don't. This is the closest I've seen to the complete interview.

Elvis looked and sounded great here, much better than earlier in the year for the "On tour " movie and the really bad "Aloha" interview in nov. of'72. This was the real Elvis.

Re: publishing & songwriters- Col. Parker was in line with what the very top few of the worlds biggest stars managers or publishers had done decades before. Al Jolson had a very similar publishing deal in the 1910’s. Jolson’s recording contracts still require he is the highest paid artist on his labels to this day. Parker was just following suit with the biggest entertainers before Elvis. He wasn’t an average manager. He didn’t represent an average artist. Very few songwriters turned down a chance with any of those top few artists. Parker’s 50% deal with Elvis didn’t start until the mid 70’s.

The problem for Elvis getting good rock songs was usually the rights to the song...again a Colonel thing...so people didn't want to give the publishing rights over....ask Dolly Parton about it so I'm sure Elvis missed out on alot of great songs because of the Colonels greed

Greed was not a factor in EP not playing overseas. Colonel Parker was an illegal US immigrant and was fearful that if he left the country he would not be aloud back in. FACTS
If you notices his LP after 1970, they focused primarily on country music. Because there were more songwriters for that genre that appealed to him.

I’m so glad you saw this. He was supposed to do 3 shows by popular demand, they put a 4th show in at Madison Square Garden. He received top notch reviews even from people he felt would criticize him such as the NYTimes. People who were there went nuts. If you look at videos from their the flashbulbs never ceased. Elvis could not record and bring out everybody s song in reality. Because colonel parker arranged it so that Elvis" publishing company claimed such an high percentage of the earnings, the good songs did rarely reach him. The construction was so, that they demanded too much royalties. In the sixties Parker even made a deal, so that he recieved 50 percent of all elvis gross income! Some songs made it to Elvis despite all that, because " it s better to get a percentage of a hit song than 100% of nothing"
Actually that kind of publishing deal was common amongst the very top few artists. They were offered great songs, and the writers were happy to have the top artists record their songs, because even small percentages by them made a ton of money and cemented your reputation as a good songwriter.
Elvis had offers from all the top managers of that day, but stayed with the Colonel, because he was the best.
