I used to think Chuck Rainey was the grooviest electric bassist around. Listening to Kaye, now I know who wrote the book. Jaco and I took much from both. Jaco also took heavily from Jerry Jemmott who is in a whole 'nother universe. No one plays Blues like Jerry. His work with Souler Energy is a must hear. But Kaye's work here is so definitive of 60's chic. Her sound was EVERYWHERE at all the cool parties.
Carol was the resident bassist for the great Wrecking Crew. Who, as studio cats must have played on literally 1000's of pop/rock and jazz tracks from the late 50's to the late 80's.
OK, as an official worshipper at the musical shrine of Joe Pass jazz guitar playing, I am happily shocked and amazed that I have not heard this before. I took classes with John Pisano in the late 1970's and loved Joe before I knew John had played with him for years. Carol, I am in awe of your cool sounds and funky lines - and jammin' with JP hip.
I want to meet Carol so bad and spend time with her. Play all kinds of oldies. And she can perhaps teach me some old Jazz and even more advanced theory. Pick up where my old professor left off. lol. He was a genius too, a damn good musician & friend of about 30 years or more. I miss my buddy Gary aka Dr. Gunn. I'm gonna try and get Carol's phone number. lol God bless you Carol Kaye.
@JMGilberto while it's true that jamerson's version was used on the record,it is also true that motown and other labels often used several players at different sessions for the same tracks......i have no doubt that carol played i was made to love her,but they went with jamerson's version instead....
There was an article I once read titles, "Paul McCartney's favorite bass player that he never heard of." I believe it referred to an interview where Paul mentioned several favorite tunes, and Carol played on all of them!
@mecksi Yes. When a idea Is good, no matter too much when come from ..like Den Xiao Ping says about the open of China to private Enterprise (not at all, but..) *No matter the color of The Cat..if can hunt Rats*
Well, it's not. Some of the funkiest bass lines in the '60's were layed down by her. Best example is Stevie Wonder - "I Was Made To Love Her". I started playing bass in soul bands in the late '60's and it took me a long time to get over the realization that I had been "OUTFUNKED" by a white girl.
a feel similar to what she did with Quincy Jones on "Hicky Burr" Very good, but at the limit of her rythmic playing. A bit far from Jamerson's urgent playing on "I Was Made To Love Her"

@0428mar According to Stevie it was Carol that played it and wrote the part.
Kaye, Osborn, Jamerson & McCartney the fantastic four.
You left out some of the serious cats -- Rainey, Jemmott, Bennett and Spampinato.

@whatanightmare1 the truth is that u just learn the wish form :P:P
if I had her fingers, Id never leave the house
She uses a pick
Think he means the other hand lol
CAROL KAYE'S most fantastic bass line was,of course, for the song "Games People Play",done by Mel Torme.
@djronadams69 : hahah the funk is everywhere! but seriously the funk def came from the black side of the planet. good ideas spread out! ;---)
@mecksi Yes. When a idea Is good, no matter too much when come from ..like Den Xiao Ping says about the open of China to private Enterprise (not at all, but..) *No matter the color of The Cat..if can hunt Rats*
lol
phunky!!
A True Genius!! Does anybody know who plays the guitar?
Joe Pass
+Ron Adams that was jamerson on made to love her
This is so amazing, where can someone find this? Is it on CD or did you upload it from the 10" vinyl?
Is she playing the guitar also on this track?
No. It's Joe Pass as listed on the cover image.
Wonder if that's Hal Blaine on drums? Kinda his style.
Paul Humphrey is credited as the drummer for this track.
@@moussetache1815 Cool, thanks!
how can I get a bass sound like this?
Use a pick and flatwound strings.
Precision bass + flat wound strings + ampeg bass amp!
$9000.
She uses a lot of palm muting also
she puts a piece of felt over the strings to mute them. flatwound strings, and a pick
@PeteZuranbeer Proof? Look, I don't buy it. The bass on "I Was Made To Love Her" sounds like it was played with fingers, not a pick...
I Was Made To Love Her was James Jamerson.
Is this guitar Joe Pass?
a feel similar to what she did with Quincy Jones on "Hicky Burr" Very good, but at the limit of her rythmic playing. A bit far from Jamerson's urgent playing on "I Was Made To Love Her"
Using a pick is gay.
She started as a 6 string guitarist then someone asked her to fill in on some sessions and she just kept the pick. She has not always been a bassist.
she insulted the James Jamerson's legacy. her style and sound is not like that at all. she should not mention the name of JJ and Motown.
1970??
