Crank Start The Model T

- Watch the old man crank start the Model T Ford. Keep in mind that the engine is old and tired.
The first thing that you need to keep in mind is that you should NEVER use your right hand to crank start these cars. If it backfires, it will break the starter (your hand, arm or wrist!) We didn't get a free start today but it does happen from time to time. A free start is when the engine starts when you turn the key on. The reason that this will occur once in a while is because of the buzz coils used by these cars. If the piston is in the right position, and there is enough fuel in the cylinder, the spark from the coil can fire the mixture and start the engine. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Lovely Ford model t.i love those old models
Thank you sir for showing it done the correct way! So many folks spin it like imbeciles. Ratchet it, its the right and smart way. 👌🏽
Just wow, from when cars were simply a tool, what an amazing piece of history, to see it work is awesome. Good for you my man.
Glad you enjoyed it. No cupholders, navigation, bluetooth, air conditioning, electric windows, seatbelts or airbags! Just basic transportation.
Normal cars had electric start by the mid teens. Only the Model Thrifty was a hold out
thanks for posting this video we need to see more stuff like this more often
More to come! One thing for sure, when you have a Model T, there is always something to work on!
Love these cars, can't get enough. Wish the old Rouge Plant was a museum. Such a bummer.
These old cars will be running when the electronics in the new ones are no longer supported.
I LOVE YOUR CAR! These are so much Fun!
They are!
I have a 1919 first year with electric starter but I always hand crank her. Great video and car. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! I replaced the ring gear on the flywheel and the starter drive so that I wouldn't have to crank it. Still, it's good to do once in a while. Everybody gets a kick out of cranking a car.
I never use electric starter. It’s fun to hand crank
Wicked .love this .watching from Newfoundland
Glad you enjoyed it. I usually use the electric starter. Less heart attacks that way! LOL
What a beauty! Thanks for sharing
You're welcome.
i love the way the fenders rattle
Everything rattles! LOL
the model t and model a are my dream cars
The Model T is a great car. I would like to get a Model A someday because they can keep up with modern traffic. The T is a little slow for the highway but it's great for the surface streets or back roads.
Thank you for the demonstration. Your explanation is perfect.
Glad it was helpful! Everybody likes to see an old man crank start a Model T!
really cool Dave, your quite the restorer. your skill cross over from the covered wagon days to today. And you have the grey hair to prove it. Keep on Wrenching!!!!!!!!
Wow, thanks! I think!
This one really reminds me of The Absent Minded Professor.
I could use some flubber! LOL
Want one so bad. Great video
They really are lots of fun. I won't restore this one, but I will replace the top and interior at some point. Stay tuned for those videos.
That's awesome. Next time we want you to drive it!
Deal!
Nice rig!
Thanks Karl. It took 93 years to get that way.
Dave Flowers ya I hear that!! Good to keep that one rolling!! Not many left I bet....
Interesting
I have had my 1918 Model T Ford for 77 years. For the life of me, how does one crank a cold Model T Ford with the left hand and pull the choke control with the right hand at the same time? Number 2 to keep from having a broken arm, ALWAYS hold the crank with thumb and all four fingers on the same side of the crank. If one always remembers to retard the spark, (lever up) they will not kick. If you forget, it will take the crank out of your hand when it fires and the engine will try to run backwards. That is what brakes arms. Trust me. I am 92 and KNOW how to start a cold Model T engine.
Thanks for all the great info Philip. 77 years with the same car is really amazing! A friend of mine and I are working on a 1918 Model T touring car, getting it ready to run. You will see that in an upcoming video.
Phillip Gardner, yes, good advice. My father-in-law, now passed, had a 14 T for 53 years. I never got to drive it, but he let me start it, especially as he got older. The first thing he taught me was the proper thumb position. He kept the car in good condition, it usually started on the first or second pull.
Maybe you should do a tutorial on how to start a normal car
Key, push button or remote start? LOL
Can’t you break your thumb gripping it like that? What if it kicks back?
Good question. The main danger in getting a kick back injury is in using your right hand to crank start the car. If the timing is too far advanced it can cause a kick back so, never use your right hand once the ignition is turned on. Using the left hand is safer because when the engine kicks back the crank will be pushed out of your left hand giving you time to get out of the way.
In every video with a car of this era, they always seem to start on the first or second crank. This shows you that that's not what really happens
Sometimes it does take a few cranks. Other times it will start just by turning on the key! It's just a good thing that I have a starter!
east of eden ch 29 brought me here
Welcome to the channel!
Never have your thumb around the handle
Thanks Jim.
Maybe you should do key start on a normal car?
If you wanna really crank try a 16 cyl caddilac has a crank but hats no what it's for 🤗 I don't see a ruxtell there its ford original.
The good news is that I don't have to crank it. It has a starter. The only thing that has been changed on the car is the paint color. When it left the factory it was green. No Ruckstell axle.
@@ModelTTime 👌🤗
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned
from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the
Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas
station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel
pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in
the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems,
turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and
New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be
done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of
crime here, called emissions and smoke crime :-(//
I know what you're saying. Our EPA is making it impossible to modify any vehicle with a VIN in any way. They are really pushing electric cars. I think the cost to the environment will be much worse than anything the automobile has ever done on gas or diesel. It's really sad...
@@ModelTTime Problem is China, China told our EU politicians that they stop any business with underdeveloped countries who still allow CO2 emitting traffic after 2030 (latest 2035) ...I am sure the USA and UK also will be forced by China to all electric traffic because today no industrialized country can afford sanctions by China....:-( The Chinese will also bann CO emitting home heating systems
They will ban the sale of ICE. Whatever was bought before will be grandfathered and phased out when scrapped. Those historic vehicles will mostly be allowed for auto shows. Those cars arent used for daily drivers anyway.
Are you also upset that you aren't allowed to ride in your medieval horse carriage down public streets in EU cities??
