  • DVD I ripped as I could find no substantial information on Bunraku. Hopefully, this can help someone learn or whatever. More info below.
    Info from DVD:
"Bunraku, the classical Japanese puppet art, uses three-quarter life-sized figures, handled by black-clothed manipulators who remain in plain view of the audience, convention rendering them invisible.
This documentary traces Bunraku from the making of the puppets and the way in which their limbs are articulated, to their costuming and use in performance. With relfections on the relationship of Bunraku to Kabuki theater.
This DVD include performances of works for Bunraku.
Commentary by the late well-known authority on dance and Asian arts, Faubion Bowers.

I love how the Japanese narrator of the play is so lively and dramatic but then the English translator isn’t even trying. 😂

I am so happy, first time I have heard this story told in English. Over the year saw a little of the Kabuki version but not translated like this💖

In elementary school, every second grader did Japan week, which was basically a focus on Asia as a whole.
Every second grader had to watch this video (some teacher had taped it off WNET).
Every second grader was told not to laugh.
Every second grader laughed because *it was fucking hilarious.*
