WG was the one who brings me into racing, as a yute listen to radio on Saturdays, and hearing the commentary how Chris, Brian and Howard would describe his riding actions , it was fascinating to listen to in the country side back then
No one better. My fav jockey growing up. Followed closely by Charles Hussy and Fitzroy Gillespie. Big up and RIP to my childhood friend and jockey Wayne Sinclair. (What could've been 😔)
Good interview...what Winston Griffiths has achieved...set records...no Jamaican jockey will ever surpass them...most classic winners...most winners...most triple crown winners...that's why he's rated as 1 of d best...2nd to George hosang
Greatest jockey for me Winston Fanna Griffiths with others have their own opinions. True gentlemen of horse racing. Everyday I use to argue with my friends who was the best jockey it was down to 2 jockeys fanna and bimbo. Bimbo was for the hardcore man in the street and fashionable fans was for fanna and till this day it going to be like that.
I remember when Joe Mercer rode at Caymanas. I was so impressed by the way he and his mount became one unit, he was in total harmony with the horses he rode.

I SALUTE you Winston fanna Griffiths!!!...who remember him winning on Bold Impulse 20 lenghts of the pace at the 3 furlong marker going 6 and a half furlongs?
One of the gentleman jockeys back in the day, while Hubert Bartley is another. Bartley, who not only dressed neatly but was just as magnificent looking in his riding style, got "jockey with the best conduct" for many years!!!
This is great Rohan. Nice feature of the record breaking jock - “Fanna”. As a fan of horse-racing, I enjoyed the competition between the horses and the jockeys especially back in the day. My favorite was Bimbo, but enjoyed the exploits of Fanna, Chinna, HoSang, Narry, Hussey, Pumpkin, & Neville. I would love to see some more jockey/racing personality interviews from the past.
Good interview I would have love to see fanna competed internationally like Bimbo or Georgie. I have whole new level of respect for Bimbo seeing him riding in New York.
Rohan thanks. Vintage features like these will always be appreciated. Future considerations could be oldtimers like Winston Ellis, Donald Andrade, Neville Cousley, Glenford Walker ect.
.....'And may I add Author Jones, Kenneth Mattis, Trevor Mckenzie, David McKenzie, Horatio Nelson...... On the note of 'oldtimers' Micah. Did you or anyone on this thread knows that jockey Keith Saunders who was once an outrider at the park some years ago, finishes in 6th place in the jockeys championship with 18 winners?? (1960) Horatio Nelson won the title that year with 27 wins.
@@Moreluv78 You are absolutely right Moreluv78. And I have some stats on that. The first time Trevor Mckenzie enters the top 10 in the jockey's standings, was in 1964. He finishes in 8th position. I'm unable to tell you how many mounts, but he won 19 races. Winston Ellis was the champion that year, winning 45 races. Trevor won the championship back to back (1965-1966) with 45 & 66 wins respectively. In 1967 he was suspended, and his license taken away, he finished 8th again with 16 wins to his credit this time around. He won the title again in 1968 riding 33 winners. Listen to this: Ellis was 2nd - 32, Mattis 3rd - 31. Sammy Heslop and cleveland Suckie ties on 30 wins each in 4th spot. Danold Andrade rounded off the top 6 on 25 wins. We certainly couldn't get it any closer than that. Shortly after that McKenzie began to suffer from weight problems. Hence he had was to exit the saddle very early. FOOTNOTE: I could've given you racing enthusiast the order of finish in the top 10 for all those years, but unfortunately time would not permit me so to do.
I remember when he rode Button up to beat Naheelah with Bimbo aboard in the 1980 fillies classic. He came back on Easter Monday and won with Eclipse in the 2000 guineas for the same trainer, Paul Newman.
Was that the same year Black Knight with Fitzroy Gillespie won the Derby? Capitol Hill finish second with Emilio Rodriguez and I think Eclipse ran third after Griffiths send him through at the half mile. Trainer Pinnock saddle the quiniela.

Also passing us here is Oneil Mullings......." You know, kinda spice the thing up a bit.
Rohan, this is vintage stuff never seen before anywhere - inside the jockey's room. 1:00 and beyond!! However, there's one thing of note though - The female narrator did a very poor job of describing what was on folding.
