Evil Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) lusts for the beautiful wife of a London barber (Johnny Depp) and transports him to Australia for a crime he did not commit. Returning after 15 years and calling himself Sweeney Todd, the now-mad man vows revenge, applying his razor to unlucky customers and shuttling the bodies down to Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), who uses them in her meat-pie shop. Though many fall to his blade, he will not be satisfied until he slits Turpin's throat.

This is one of the greatest horror movies ever. Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett are very interesting characters played perfectly by Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter respectively, the musical numbers and score are all excellent, the visuals are stunning, and it's one of the few horror movies to win an Oscar. In this case, best production design.

This is my favorite horror movie musical of all time. And the one thing I really love about this movie is Mrs Lovett's relationship with the little boy Toby. Mrs lovett herself was the mother figure in Toby's life, and she was there for him when nobody else was. Also you got to feel bad for the customers for eating the meat pies, because they have no idea what they are really eating.

You realize the only major characters who don't die in the film are the ones who are considered the good characters: Anthony, Johanna and Tobias (Toby). And it is tragic when you think about the finale. The Barker family were finally reunited within the same room but they (with the brief exception of Lucy) didn't recognize each other. Even Lucy only vaguely recalled something about Todd but not to the full extent. And in the end, Todd ended up killing the woman who he was avenging in the end. It is all tragic when you think about it.

Actually, the whole relationship between Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett is only romantic on Mrs. Lovett’s side. It’s shown in the song “By the Sea” with Sweeney’s only line being “anything you say” that he’s not listening to her and the relationship is purely a means to an end for him

While a weaker vocalist than the role of Todd needs, Depp brings his signature somber flare and gives the movie’s version of Sweeney a darker level of lethal than the stage musical. His facial acting when he is killing is amazing. And those close ups of his reaction to Lovett’s betrayal are just chilling. Johnny was made to be Sweeney Todd.
This is actually not Depp’s first musical but is the first time the audience hears his real singing voice. And he did not learn to sing specifically for this role as has been reported many times. While it is true he did train to sing this particular score with better control and technique, so he didn’t disrespect the gravitas of the character, Depp was a passable vocalist beforehand.
Crybaby was technically his first movie musical. It’s like a spoof of Grease and a pre-cursor to what the musical Hairspray would become on Broadway. He supposedly recorded all the songs his character sings in the movie and when filming he was supposedly doing the playback vocals to his own voice (only Johnny Depp and John Waters truly know for sure when Depp was actually replaced), however for some reason Depp was completely redubbed before the movie was released. So the audience never got to hear his real singing voice. Instead they heard rockabilly artist James Intveld, whom was never credited for the work he did on the movie.

I think it´s great that we hear his real singing voice in this movie, because he does a great job. The more operatic vocals in the original don´t really do it for me. Johnny Depp is also playing with his voice, everything from desperate and sad to angry and evil. In 2022 he also made an album with guitar-legend Jeff Beck where he sings different cover-songs and he also sings two songs in his band "Hollywood Vampires". He really has feeling in his voice, it´s a pleasure listening to it.

Nearly everybody knows him, he was the best paid Hollywood actor for a long time and so on... But it seems that a lot of people still don´t get how awesome his acting is - every single time! He brings every character to life, whether it is a weird chocolate factory owner, an insane barber, a mad hatter or a gangster boss - and he´s also brilliant in more "normal" roles, for example in "Chocolat".

Fun fact about this movie: Meryl Streep REALLY wanted to play the role of Mrs. Lovett, and even accepted the role in Lemony Snickett's to show that she could fit in a "dark" aesthetic movie. But she didn't get the part because of Tim Burton's proclivity for re-casting actors he had already worked with. In this case, his ex-wife Helena Bonham Carter - breaking the long standing Broadway tradition of a significantly older woman playing the part of Mrs. Lovett. This snub led to Meryl Strep accepting the part in: "Mamma Mia."
Also. Sweeney's daughter in the film is played by Johnny Depp's real life daughter Lilly Rose Depp.

I wonder if they'd killed the Beadle and the Judge before Johanna and Anthony turned up if Mrs Lovvett and Todd would've let them both go, if they would've talked Johanna into staying and killed Anthony or if they would've tried to talk both Anthony and Johanna into staying, working in the shop.
Either way the creepy thing is when Mrs Lovett said "Poor little Johanna, all those years without a scrap of motherly affection. Well, I'll soon see to that", is that I believe her. She would be perfectly motherly to Johanna, just like she was to Toby. That's why she's scary, the fact that she can be genuinely caring.

It's called The Ballad of Sweeney Todd. It has numerous reprises, as well as another variation for the finale. Originally there was a plan to keep the song in and have a graveyard where the ghosts of Sweeney's victims sing it, but this got scrapped and they just had the instrumental. That's probably because the use of this song onstage wouldn't translate particularly well to film unless you put in a Greek chorus like Little Shop of Horrors, which wouldn't fit with the tone at all.

You need to check out Edward Scissorhands. I love that movie so much. Also If you want to watch older movies, I recommend "The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari". Such a good silent film. Also Psycho is pretty good. Also also "Night of the Living Dead" is the first zombie movie and it has the first black actor to star as a hero in a horror movie.
I enjoyed this. I love this movie. Keep up the good work! :)

This is my number 1 favorite Tim Burton/horror movie ever. I mean Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd was definitely the best choice he brought the character to life. Alan Rickman played really well as the Judge it just makes you hate him because of what he did to the barber R.I.P to Alan Rickman. In this movie in my opinion Judge Turpin gets karma for what he did to the barber and Sweeney Todd revenge will not solve anything but in this case I’m happy that he got his revenge but felt sad that he didn’t realize that it was his wife that he killed until Miss Lovett opened the oven and the light showed his dead wife plus him singing to his dead wife at the end of the movie. But again this movie was really good I give it a 10 out of 10.

That's the worst part about the pies - it does make a twisted sense. Good meat is expensive, the stuff they can afford tastes terrible, business is so bad that they can't really afford to buy either the bad meat or the good meat, they have a body upstairs they have to get rid of and.......as Mrs Lovett said, it does seem a waste.

I don´t know so much about vocal ranges and so on, but I think Johnny Depp is very versatile. Although his speaking voice is more deep, he can go up with it quite high. I don´t know, but it´s fitting the songs anyway 😂. "Epiphany", "My friends" and "A barber and his wife" are on my playlist - I´m hearing them sometimes while doing daily stuff 🤣.

Some musicals have song after song, and others have breaks of dialogue. Many don't have much dialogue, but a little. The last musical I saw onstage was Heathers. If they cut the dialogue, the story would fall apart. Like, you can't go straight from Dead Girl Walking to The Me Inside of Me because Heather dies between songs and The Me Inside of Me covers the suicide note, her corpse being found and everyone's reaction. No, Heather Chandler dying isn't a spoiler, everyone knows going in not everyone is going to survive and she was a top contender to go first.

I'm glad to hear you've seen the staged version as well so you know how it's meant to be. For me the film lacks any energy, especially in songs like Worst Pies or a Little Priest. And of course cuts out all the fourth wall breaking chorus moments.

You've probably never heard of this movie/miniseries called Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story (2001). It's really underrated, and it has a lot of famous people in such as Matthew Modine (Papa from Stranger Things), Richard Attenborough (that old dude from Jurassic Park), Jon Voight (Angelina Jolie's father) and many others. It's basically a retelling of the Jack and the Beanstock story. It's really difficult to find. I highly recommend that you watch it, and if you find it, you don't need to record and upload it, but it's still interesting.

Either Toby escapes out the side entrance with the knives with the last of his innocence gone and becomes a street criminal and Anthony gets the police after Johanna tells him what happened (pretty easy to come up with a cover story, just say that he came to collect a few shillings from an old friend, heard something and went to investigate, pretend that Johanna is a young boy off about to join him at sea), or Anthony will find Johanna, Johanna will lead him downstairs, they find Toby, they piece together what happened and then the three of them escape onto the ship to either spend the rest of their lives on the sea or settle down someplace either in another country or just go to the countryside and find work there with a resolute promise that they'll never speak of what happened in Fleet Street again. That's what I figure happens next.
