A VISIT TO PENANG HILL | Sunrise, Train and Hiking Trail

  • We dragged ourselves out of bed at 5am to go and watch the sunrise from Penang Hill!
We took the Penang Hill train in the dark, watching the lights of Penang twinkle below us. There were only 10 of us on the train so we had the whole hill to ourselves!
Was the sunrise at Penang Hill worth the early morning start?
We then went for a walk along one of the hiking trails and felt like the only 2 people in the world!

I was serving in the RAAF on a posting to Air Base Butterworth in 1974-77 and again 1978-1980, the married quarters were on Penang island and Penang hill was a favourite place to get away from the heat and humidity at night and during the day sometimes depending on the prevailing weather. Back in the early to mid 1970's the rail cars moved slower and were made of wood. There are examples at the Penang museum, well there used to be. The construction of the hill funicular railway was instigated by the British way back in the 1920's I took super eight movie footage of the railway way back in the 1970's, the hill was very different then.

The hill brought back lots of pleasant memories. The last time I was there was 30 years ago. I remember the monkeys! Back then, the train was made of wood and pulled with cable. Thank you for showing the latest development on the Hill. Great video.

Stunning morning shots . Walking up the hill is a challenge, we have done it twice . The UK tv series Indian Summers was filmed in the stately homes on the hill . The street scenes were filmed in Armenian street. Penang in my eyes is a stunner . Good video and very educational.

Where there’s lots of limestone hill to explore. Not to worry, expenses on me. 🥳
