Owned a ton of expensive ADVs and Enduro's. My KLX i spent under $100 on a 13t sprocket, bigger pegs, a bicycle air pump, and a backpack LOL. Adjust the psi and suspension clickers and have more fun than any of my bikes I spent 3x more on.
Amigo ! Excellent videos. I just got rid of my 2020 Africa twin adventure sport. It was dangerously heavy. I did the California and NM BDRs and hard to manage in mud and rough slow terrain. Luckily my back is still ok. I get my KLX 300 this Tuesday and so excited. I am doing the WYBDR this summer with the KLX. Already ordered the bigger IMS tank, TRX windshield and tusk carrying rack. I went with the KLX300SM, since I avoid mud and single track riding. I went with T-Rex Racing skid plate and hand guards that are custom designed for the bike. I also added the Zeta Adventure windscreen with Honda Rally style GPS mount point. I also have a Amazon rear rack that comes with holes for the rotopax mount. I also have the Sargent seat, Wolfman dual sport saddlebags, and Amazon soft top bags. I put it on a rack behind my truck and basecamp. Worked my way all the way to Maine from Tennessee last summer.
Good to see someone else seeing the niche the KLX250/300 fills. I too, choose the KLX as the bike for me after 30yr of not riding. The last bike for me was a 1978 DT400 Enduro. First Yamaha road registrable monoshock dirt bike, except for the terrible geometry of the front end it was a monster of a 2stroke, the next year used a flatter triple grip with forward axle mount which should have improved things. On the KLX I went with the IMS 11 lt tank, yes a lot of money for little gain, but the peace of mind these extra 3Lt's give has been worth it & so far I have not carried extra fuel. A Seat Concepts has not filled my expectations, it needs modifying. I had the suspension rehashed with spring front & rear suited for my weight and gold valves up front with the rear shock modified buy the suspension professional. Better planted as they say with a nice soft ride on the sharp hits. A fair bit of money, but worth it. Actually just fitting foot pegs today, finally. A simple cheap rear rack from China (cheap) with a surprising good finish. See how time treats it. LED globes front and rear, better light & less chance of killing the battery if left on for a while. A cheap tail tidy from China which won't fit without a bit of modifying, KLX bits and pieces are not always easy to find, especially down-under. Cheap tail bag fixed to a cut down nylon chopping board. It won't last, but now I have a better idea of what I want. Bar risers with Renthal bars, will look for a taller bend with more space around the controls & sweep that I fell I need. Thanks for the Vid. ....SPC

Great video. Thanks! I have a friend who has been unsuccessful in getting a CRF300L Rally and I've been trying to talk him into getting a KLX300 and doing ADV mods. I have a BMW G310GS but it's the baby GS and all manufacturers treat their small ADV bikes like beginner bikes or Asian market bikes so we don't get full featured small ADV bikes, which is a shame. I'd love to pay $2000 more for the Adventure version with larger fuel tank, a bit better suspension, an aluminum bash plate, engine protection bars, maybe a center stand, and spoke tubeless wheels. I've done many of the same mods you've done but the one thing I can't mod to my liking is the 2.9 gallon tank. An ADV bike should have a 5 gallon tank, minimum. I installed Koso Apollo heated grips and I love them. I've ridden small dual sport thumpers since the mid 1970s. This is the first bike I've had with heated grips, and I'll never have a bike without them. The Koso heated grips look like factory heated grips. The controls are small and integrated into the left grip so there's no klunky control box bolted to the handlebars. I'm trying to do ultralight motorcycle camping. I have a 30 liter Givi waterproof roll top bag mounted as a tail bag. For day trips, it contains my large tool roll, first aid kit, rain suit, lunch, 32 ounce Hydroflask, etc. When camping, the 30L bag is the wet stuff bag - rain gear, fly, tent or hammock, water, etc. I then mount a 66 liter roll top dry duffel on top of the 30L bag for the dry stuff - clothes, stove, food, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, etc. The top loading duffel is easily accessed at rest stops. No panniers means nothing hanging out to the sides causing aerodynamic drag or catching on trees and rocks off road, and it also means I don't have the weight of the panniers and racks, which can be 20 pounds even before filling them with my stuff. If you'd like to be more comfortable camping in warm weather, try a good lay-flat hammock system with an integrated rain fly and mosquito netting. I have a Hennessy hammock and it's more comfortable than my bed at home. The Haven hammock can be pitched as a one person tent if there are no trees, which is great for motorcycle camping where a lot of ground is covered and you can be above the tree line, in a desert, on the plains, on the beach, etc. I wouldn't have Scooter Waylon at your Shadetree Moorsickle dealer do anything to my bike.

Last week I mounted a Pelican 1060 dry box on the handlebars to use as a glove box in lieu of a tank bag, and on top of that I mounted a Samsung Tab A7 Lite tablet to use with the OSMand app for offline GPS navigation with a large color display for my old eyes. That also gives me a tablet that I can use as a general computing device as a WiFi web browser while traveling, video player, MP3 player, audiobook player, PDF viewer for user manuals, etc. The week before that I installed Givi engine protection bars. I still need to install the LED conspicuity lighting. I also need to buy the Seat Concepts upgraded seat. So far, I've spent more time farkling than I have motorcycle camping, but hopefully that's about to change. I'm wrapping up a couple of chores today and hope to go on an overnight trip to a nice spot 65 miles away in the Daniel Boone National Forest. The weather is nice and hanging in the hammock will do me a lot of good.
Nice mods and video. I live in SC also...Simpsonville. Just finished the TAT in mid Sept 2022...the KLX is the perfect bike..I did gear it to 13/40 and it was needed for the CO, UT and NV mountains. Owesome ride with the Seat Concepts seat mod.. Luggage was soft and glad I had it with a few slow speed get offs...I know I would have broken my leg on one get off if I had hard panniers mounted on the bike. I used a Giant Loop 1 gal gas bag which was great. When I did not need if just rolled it up and it took up little space. Keep the mods coming..

beautiful setup. I just bought the same bike this week and im super excited to start running around on it and do some extra mods on top of what the previous owner has already done. I am relatively new to the ADV scene and was going down the trap/rabbit hole that is big heavy expensive ADV bikes but i honestly really dont like screaming down paved highways going 70+mph. Its awful and i dont like it lol. I just love the dirt and trails and off road riding so im super happy with my KLX 300.
Nice build - very similar to what I did with my XT250 after selling my Africa Twin but you've got some interesting additions I'll have to look at (clutch lever for one - my Acerbis are too close to the levers as well!). I too was getting older and found myself increasingly doing more technical riding and in more remote locations - the anxiety of doing so on a solo basis just got too much. I picked up the AT a lot - but always felt I was one lift away from an injury and usually 50km or more away from help. I also learned it's much more fun to ride hard on a small bike than ride tentative on a big bike. I built a cargo trailer camper and haul the XT with that if highway miles are required. I bought the XT and an old Honda ST1300 for road touring all for the price I sold my AT for - so that worked out great! Thanks for the video.
Good video. I love my klx300. I bought mine during the lockdowns so It took like 7 months for my dealer to get it. 😢 I originally ordered the black camo as well but when a standard green one became available months sooner, I got impatient and jumped on it. I REALLY regret not waiting for the black camo instead though because it looks so freakin badass 😭 I made a small plexiglass windscreen, installed pegs, high rise bars, bark busters, rear rack, fog lights, power outlet, headlight. Absolutely love this bike. The tiny fog lights make riding in the woods at night sooo much better

@@DevDog67 To make the windscreen, I just measured out a good shape. Then cut it out using a jig saw with a blade meant for cutting metal. To give the windscreen a good bend, I heated it in the oven laying the right way on a piece of 2x4. It came out so much better than I thought it would
Very top heavy and far back setup for what I think this bike can handle longterm. I have the same bike. Fyi, a guy I was with (on 2022 klx300ds) on a recent multiday trip had to bail because his rear subframe cracked in half on one side. After riding home on 175 miles of pavement, the other side failed. He always carried a rotopax plus other stuff on the rack. He is rethinking that and has a welder lined up.
@MotoTherapy Not sure, it was buried under his tusk highlander panniers and a big roll? He has a history of overpacking it sounds like. Notable failure for me though. I pack much lighter, but ride much faster, harder...
@@Matthew-zw9su I only carry the rotopax if I know I will be in a fuel anxiety situation, which so far has been one time. I have a smaller fuel bottle that I can also cargo-net onto the rear seat, but I rarely need to ride with either. Good to be aware of what you said, though. I’ve heard about the subframe breaking from one other person, too…possibly a different incident.
Great video, exactly what I was looking for. I had an 07 KLX250s years ago and loved it. Getting ready to retire now and plan to get the KLX300 because it's small enough to toss around off road, and also small enough to fit in the off road camper that I plan to build. Haven't looked to see if you have any performance mod videos yet, but I will. I did the KLX300R header and aftermarket muffler mod to my 250, as well as a re-jet and sprocket change....it really opened up that 250! Curious about your SC location, we're moving to our SC place from NC for retirement. We're on a small lake between Simpsonville and Greenwood....love it down there!
Excellent! I live between Lexington and Saluda, near the west end of Lake Murray. I’m not one to make performance mods, so none have been made to my KLX…it serves my purposes as-is. Best wishes to you with your move and bike!
This is a great video! I have a 2016 GS and would like something lighter for the same reasons you stated. I too live in SC and want to do SM 500/1000 and though some sections are fine on the GS, some section definitely are not, at least for me. I too am in my late 50s and don't feel like picking p the GS on a regular basis!. Thanks for this!!
Nice video. I've been interested in the KLX 300 for the same reasons as you expressed. However, I just purchased a new KLR 650 and I like it so far. Those Tusk panniers are super cool! Looking forward to your next adventure.
Looks great! Nice video. I also have the KLX300. I think it is a great adventure bike. I have spent many full days on the bike and have no complaints...except the seat. You will probably find it is not great after a couple full days on the trail. I am currently ordering an aftermarket seat and hopefully it will alleviate the problem. I also added a windscreen/gps holder.
nice bike....We just got into adv biking....both my wife and I. I bought a Tiger 900 Rally Pro and she has a KLX 140 RL....( she rides only dirt ) however I am leaning more and more towards a smaller bike like the KLX300 for exclusively off road. We are trying to learn the South Carolina area for off road and adventure rides. New sub here.
It’s amazing to me that no one is making a bigger gas tank for the 300. I think Acerbis made a 3.7 gal back in 2009 for the 250 but nothing for the fuel injected model.
I'm stuck between so many options. Currently, insurance is the largest factor for me since it's really expensive here in MB, Canada. I'd like to get a KLR650, but insurance is practically double that of a KLX300 or DR-Z400. I also want to go on long trips across Canada and the US, so technically, the KLR650 reigns surpreme. Still, if I can modify the KLX300 to support longer distances, I don't see why it wouldn't work. I do worry that I'll want more power, but honestly, for this being my first bike, I just want 2 wheels that move haha. Thanks for the info!!
Good luck with your decision! In my view, the KLX300 can do highways, but it is not a highway-friendly bike, and I would not want to do extended trips with it if a lot of the riding was highway riding. BUT, if the extended trips were on back roads, then I wouldn't hesitate.
@MotoTherapy Mostly highway I think. I'd like to keep it 50/50, but I can guarantee it'll be more highway. Would swapping the tires similar to those on the SM model help significantly? Or is there more to it? I was considering the SM, but I've heard the suspension is better on the base KLX300 for offroad. I'm a relatively tall and heavier set dude, so I've gotta take that into account too.
@freac212 I'm seeing this video 4 months late, so you very well may have purchased your bike by now; but considering it's your first bike and that you'll be doing the majority of your riding on the highway, the KLX 300 would be the worst choice. The 650 will be the best on road while the 300 will be best off road. Taking into account you're a bigger guy, I'd advise picking up the DRZ. it'll give you more power all around than the 300 and better handling off road than the 650.
I too thought the IMS tank is not worth it but have had a lot of riding days where I could have been spared having to stop to get fuel on the way back home. I'll get that tank or get a factory one to modify whenever I can afford it. Sometimes convenience comes at a high price.
Got a deposit on one for this spring. I'm hoping someone comes out with a 3-3.5 gallon tank so we don't have to have range anxiety. Otherwise this is the perfect bike for my needs.
Dealer should've called before cutting that off but I'm sure that's the way it's done w/ that brand & they know about it. I don't see being mad but it's one of those that make ya go, Hmm? But you're very capable so I'm sure you've already considered how/what & when ya might get around to it? The fork boots; why haven't I seen other folks using them? They make a lot of sense for even the least mechanically able to put on & w/ the cost of suspension stuff they really are a common sense addition. I subb'd for that info & I don't own a bike yet.... lol, I'm saving & looking at 10-11 bikes, this one ain't too bad !

I have about 3500 mi on my klx 300 so far I love my seat concepts seat for longer rides and I went with the pmr rack system I'm about to regear to 13 40 to see how I like it
Nice build and nice little fleet of bikes I see there. I had an XT250 with a KLX300. Unfortunately, I believe I either got a lemon with my KLX or the dealership I bought it from had an incompetent mechanic. At about 10 months and 3400 miles or so, it started running like garbage. The dealership did a top end rebuild but the bike was no better. It spent several more weeks in the shop. After a total of over three months of not being able to ride my bike, I cut my losses and sold it to a different dealership (who thought they could get it running right, I suppose they did but I don't know). I still have the XT250 but sort of miss the KLX300. I replaced the KLX300 with a true dirt bike, the CRF250RX and plated the CRF, but a real dual sport would be better for anything more than connecting close trailheads. The XT is fun, but just is not quite enough performance for me and the ergos are a bit tight. I'm considering another KLX300 or maybe a KLX300R with the dual sport kit. A real subframe might be the deciding factor. I will be also checking out a CRF300L, but I rode one back to back with my KLX when I still had it and know that at the time, the KLX was the better bike for me and the riding I tend to do which leans more to the dirt side than pavement. If I tended more to pavement, I'd go with the CRF300L.

@@andersd8956 I got a big bore kit alright. I ended up getting a CRF450L. I really was contemplating another KLX300 and then upgrading it. But I have a CRF250RX and just love the top flight suspension and all that. I couldn't go back to the KLX. The CRF450L has all the power and good suspension I'd need. But I did have to address the ECU. The stock fueling was rough. Now that it's sorted out, I'm super happy.
My sub frame broke with the weight of a roto-pax on the tail. I did not use this rack with the supports from the rack to the lower attach points on the frame. Maybe that will help, but beware of the poor strength of the rear sub-frame.
I think you are a bit unfair to yourself, most can't reliably pick up a 'midweight' motorcycle in 'just wrong' conditions. I've heard an mx guy state that his criteria for the weight was "to be able to pick up while standing on one leg while pushing up a hill". Nice build!
Great build, great video. I like the KLX300 but the small tank, and lack of a substantially larger aftermarket tank, is a deal breaker for now. Rotopax is a good solution but would prefer to avoid it.
I would definitely go back to the dealer and make them fix all that crap putting on different guards, other than bark busters which you requested is not satisfactory specially, when you’re cutting down the levers for the break in the clutch not good. I would love to know the dealer that did that, so I don’t end up going there and getting the same crap!
Nice mods! I'll be getting some of those shock sox. I'd give IMS a call. I heard there's a 3.2gal tank for a different model of Kawasaki that can fit on the KLX300. I'm not looking for a bigger tank right now, but I'd love to know more about this possible option.
Thanks. I actually did correspond with IMS, and here is their response to me on August 3rd: “I’m afraid that we still have not developed any new or larger size tank for that KLX300 model of yours. The only tank that we had available right now was going to be the 2.7 gallon size that we originally designed for the KLX250S (EFI) model, and I know that’s not as big as some KLX riders were hoping for. As of right now, we wouldn’t have another chance to work on a larger tank until the end of the year or maybe start of 2023, but it’s no guarantee. Sorry for any inconvenience this might cause for you, but please let me know if you had any other questions or concerns.”
@@MotoTherapy Thanks for the info! I'll probably wait to see if they announce something around early 2023. If not sometime in the spring I'll look into other options. Planning to do a BDR on the KLX next spring.

I chose one of the last wr250rs over both the klx300 and the Honda 300l for 2 reasons 1 I it was in stock 2 the suspension. I'm glad about my decision do to all the problems some have with the klx300 and the crapy lame suspension of the Honda.. plus I am 6ft2 with 34" inseam so I can flat foot on the wr250r.. still looking into reckless bags for it for short trips..have a tenere 700 for longer trips

This, or a DR650? I think this is a fun not too long distance bike. But a little light and small perhaps for ADV. I haven't pulled the trigger yet on which bike!
Both are great bikes. The DR650 is a proven machine that will definitely handle long distances better. The KLX is light nimbler-a bit easier to toss around.
Can I ask why you chose the KLX over the CRF ? I’m 62 and have been going the same route as you. I have a 21 CRF 300 l but I’m getting ready to change some things and wonder if the klx would be a better platform.
@@Mjr1348 I only chose the KLX over the CRF because of the KLX’s better suspension. I love my KLX. That said, I am very intrigued by the new CFMoto Ibex 450 (aka 450 MT). It didn’t exist when I bought my KLX, but seems to check a lot of my boxes. The only drawback (but not a total show-stopper) for me is that it’s 100% Chinese.
You didn’t really show the “barkbuster”installation reference the mount interference with the front brake hose above the upper triple clamp guide. I had a problem with wearing the rubber sheath . I drilled a new hole in the barkbuster about an inch short of the old hole for the mount. Lots better but the hose can still contact the mount slightly.
My brake line does contact my handguard when the suspension is fully compressed. I have since wrapped electrical tape around the line, and it seems to be protecting the line well enough. My next solution would be to zip-tie a piece of plastic or PVC (or something smooth) to the handguard to help eliminate any harsh rubbing.
I sold a KLR650 and bought a Versys 300X. I have had a lot of fun on the 300x but it sounds like it’s screaming it’s guts out on the highway and doesn’t do as well off-road. I was thinking I would go back to a KLR 650 until I saw this video. Do you think the KLR650 Adventure is too heavy?
I suppose “too heavy” depends on the rider (both strength and skill level) and intended use. For me, the KLR would be heavier than my preference for any sort of serious off-pavement riding, primarily because I wouldn’t want to lift it after the inevitable drops. Plus, it’s a tall bike and I have short legs. But everyone is different, and the KLR certainly offers a good value for the price.
No cable mods. The front brake line does run some of the clamp of the left handguard, so I have wrapped the line in that spot with a layer of electrical tape. Seems to provide adequate protection.
Great video. I've got the 300sm which I've modded for offroad. Curious as to what the box/electronics is on the left side or your bars directly in front of your GPS mount? Is that part of the GPS system or??????? cheers from SoCal

Careful with the “quick release” contraption on the TUSK rack, their so quick they’ll release even while you’re still riding down the road 😂😖 happened to me. …and yes, they’re extremely (unnecessarily) heavy and overbuilt.
Yeah, "overbuilt" is great when the rack ends up function as crash protection, but your "unnecessarily" modifier is absolutely on target--especially for the quick mount plates...they could have cut outs, be half their weight, and still be plenty durable.
On my 2023 Regarding the drain hoses I have one tan hose underneath that looks like it connects to the gas tank. You have two hoses-any idea what your second tan hose is for 🤷🏻♂️ Thx!
Thanks for the excellent video. I'm thinking of wiring my Zumo 395lm myself or having the dealer do it for $200 to $270. Was it difficult installing yours? Did you wire it to the battery or is there a way to wire it to the ignition switch so it turns the unit off when the key is turned off?
Mine is wired directly to the battery. I actually prefer this “unswitched” power to “switched” power, as I don’t have to wait for the unit to reboot every time I turn the key off. But, this does call for removing the unit from the cradle when the bike will be turned off for longer periods of time, to prevent excessive battery drain (but it’s a quick release, so it takes 2 seconds). The installation is easy, if you are at all handy. It involves removing the seat and side panels in order to tuck and zip-tie the wiring so that it is out of the way and can’t be seen. There’s no right or wrong way to run the power cord-you just don’t want it resting directly on the hot motor, or exposed so it could get caught on a branch, etc.
I looked back at my order from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. Part number was 1053900009. I don’t see them when searching directly, though, so probably best to contact IMS directly to see what’s up.
I tried the Adventure Spec mini-fairing. It 100% blocked my view of and access to the bike's instrument cluster. Props to AS for a seamless returm process.
I weigh about 220 lbs. I tightened everything a few turns/clicks, and it is adequate. I don’t see a pressing need for a suspension upgrade-at least anytime in the near future.

It is certainly an option, and I’ve used the aluminum boxes on other bikes, but I wanted soft bags on my dual spurt since I tend to use it on more technical terrain. Aluminum boxes can hurt more when crashing.
Good point. I own a 2023 KLX300 and am making a decision on the luggage. I am new to dual sports so I didn’t even consider that. My FJ-09, and FJR1300 both have hard panniers but I haven’t been down on either of those. I know I’ll be going down on the Klx.😂. I did pick up some motocross boots for added protection. I plan on being fully geared up with knee-shin guards, and upper body protection as well. I did the snorkel mod, delkevic exhaust, EJK, and skid plate so far. Luggage and bars are next. Also need new foot pegs. The factory ones are terrible.
@@plumberjoe80 Check out pivot pegs..expensive but they really help when you have those large boots on and want to shift gears and you can pivot your left foot. Also when standing you don't realize it but they pivot and keep your weight centered on the bike. I would definitely go for soft luggage. I have large adventure bikes with hard panniers, but for the adventures on the KLX will be more challenging roads and potential for falling...on the TAT I fell 3 times...glad I had the soft luggage (Mosko Moto) PMR makes a good rear rack and side racks for the KLX.
Not yet, other than adjusting it for my fat arse. I do believe a new shock is in my future, though. But I can live with the stock one if needed-it’s decent enough.
@@OlsonADV Note: It’s not a street bike, so I just needed to accept that I couldn’t flat foot both sides at the same time. Not a big deal once you’re used to it. In terms of ergos, the distance between the seat and pegs is quite comfortable for me.

@@MotoTherapy Seat Concepts make a model with 1" less padding which would help with your flat footed placement on the bike...I think that is better than a lowering kit which then you have to make adjustments to the side stand.
No offence but that is too much weight and too high up with the top box/rotopax. Ditch the racks, use a giant loop coyote and their gas bag. Weigh both, should be a big difference

Owned a ton of expensive ADVs and Enduro's. My KLX i spent under $100 on a 13t sprocket, bigger pegs, a bicycle air pump, and a backpack LOL. Adjust the psi and suspension clickers and have more fun than any of my bikes I spent 3x more on.

Amigo ! Excellent videos. I just got rid of my 2020 Africa twin adventure sport. It was dangerously heavy. I did the California and NM BDRs and hard to manage in mud and rough slow terrain. Luckily my back is still ok. I get my KLX 300 this Tuesday and so excited. I am doing the WYBDR this summer with the KLX. Already ordered the bigger IMS tank, TRX windshield and tusk carrying rack. I went with the KLX300SM, since I avoid mud and single track riding. I went with T-Rex Racing skid plate and hand guards that are custom designed for the bike. I also added the Zeta Adventure windscreen with Honda Rally style GPS mount point. I also have a Amazon rear rack that comes with holes for the rotopax mount. I also have the Sargent seat, Wolfman dual sport saddlebags, and Amazon soft top bags.
I put it on a rack behind my truck and basecamp. Worked my way all the way to Maine from Tennessee last summer.

Good to see someone else seeing the niche the KLX250/300 fills. I too, choose the KLX as the bike for me after 30yr of not riding. The last bike for me was a 1978 DT400 Enduro. First Yamaha road registrable monoshock dirt bike, except for the terrible geometry of the front end it was a monster of a 2stroke, the next year used a flatter triple grip with forward axle mount which should have improved things.
On the KLX I went with the IMS 11 lt tank, yes a lot of money for little gain, but the peace of mind these extra 3Lt's give has been worth it & so far I have not carried extra fuel.
A Seat Concepts has not filled my expectations, it needs modifying.
I had the suspension rehashed with spring front & rear suited for my weight and gold valves up front with the rear shock modified buy the suspension professional. Better planted as they say with a nice soft ride on the sharp hits. A fair bit of money, but worth it.
Actually just fitting foot pegs today, finally.
A simple cheap rear rack from China (cheap) with a surprising good finish. See how time treats it.
LED globes front and rear, better light & less chance of killing the battery if left on for a while.
A cheap tail tidy from China which won't fit without a bit of modifying, KLX bits and pieces are not always easy to find, especially down-under.
Cheap tail bag fixed to a cut down nylon chopping board. It won't last, but now I have a better idea of what I want.
Bar risers with Renthal bars, will look for a taller bend with more space around the controls & sweep that I fell I need.

Great video. Thanks! I have a friend who has been unsuccessful in getting a CRF300L Rally and I've been trying to talk him into getting a KLX300 and doing ADV mods. I have a BMW G310GS but it's the baby GS and all manufacturers treat their small ADV bikes like beginner bikes or Asian market bikes so we don't get full featured small ADV bikes, which is a shame. I'd love to pay $2000 more for the Adventure version with larger fuel tank, a bit better suspension, an aluminum bash plate, engine protection bars, maybe a center stand, and spoke tubeless wheels.
I've done many of the same mods you've done but the one thing I can't mod to my liking is the 2.9 gallon tank. An ADV bike should have a 5 gallon tank, minimum.
I installed Koso Apollo heated grips and I love them. I've ridden small dual sport thumpers since the mid 1970s. This is the first bike I've had with heated grips, and I'll never have a bike without them. The Koso heated grips look like factory heated grips. The controls are small and integrated into the left grip so there's no klunky control box bolted to the handlebars.
I'm trying to do ultralight motorcycle camping. I have a 30 liter Givi waterproof roll top bag mounted as a tail bag. For day trips, it contains my large tool roll, first aid kit, rain suit, lunch, 32 ounce Hydroflask, etc. When camping, the 30L bag is the wet stuff bag - rain gear, fly, tent or hammock, water, etc. I then mount a 66 liter roll top dry duffel on top of the 30L bag for the dry stuff - clothes, stove, food, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, etc. The top loading duffel is easily accessed at rest stops. No panniers means nothing hanging out to the sides causing aerodynamic drag or catching on trees and rocks off road, and it also means I don't have the weight of the panniers and racks, which can be 20 pounds even before filling them with my stuff.
If you'd like to be more comfortable camping in warm weather, try a good lay-flat hammock system with an integrated rain fly and mosquito netting. I have a Hennessy hammock and it's more comfortable than my bed at home. The Haven hammock can be pitched as a one person tent if there are no trees, which is great for motorcycle camping where a lot of ground is covered and you can be above the tree line, in a desert, on the plains, on the beach, etc.
I wouldn't have Scooter Waylon at your Shadetree Moorsickle dealer do anything to my bike.

Last week I mounted a Pelican 1060 dry box on the handlebars to use as a glove box in lieu of a tank bag, and on top of that I mounted a Samsung Tab A7 Lite tablet to use with the OSMand app for offline GPS navigation with a large color display for my old eyes. That also gives me a tablet that I can use as a general computing device as a WiFi web browser while traveling, video player, MP3 player, audiobook player, PDF viewer for user manuals, etc. The week before that I installed Givi engine protection bars. I still need to install the LED conspicuity lighting. I also need to buy the Seat Concepts upgraded seat. So far, I've spent more time farkling than I have motorcycle camping, but hopefully that's about to change. I'm wrapping up a couple of chores today and hope to go on an overnight trip to a nice spot 65 miles away in the Daniel Boone National Forest. The weather is nice and hanging in the hammock will do me a lot of good.
I put accerbis on my klx250s and didn't have to cut my levers. Got plenty of room for hands even with gloves.

Nice mods and video. I live in SC also...Simpsonville. Just finished the TAT in mid Sept 2022...the KLX is the perfect bike..I did gear it to 13/40 and it was needed for the CO, UT and NV mountains. Owesome ride with the Seat Concepts seat mod.. Luggage was soft and glad I had it with a few slow speed get offs...I know I would have broken my leg on one get off if I had hard panniers mounted on the bike. I used a Giant Loop 1 gal gas bag which was great. When I did not need if just rolled it up and it took up little space. Keep the mods coming..

beautiful setup. I just bought the same bike this week and im super excited to start running around on it and do some extra mods on top of what the previous owner has already done. I am relatively new to the ADV scene and was going down the trap/rabbit hole that is big heavy expensive ADV bikes but i honestly really dont like screaming down paved highways going 70+mph. Its awful and i dont like it lol. I just love the dirt and trails and off road riding so im super happy with my KLX 300.
Nice build - very similar to what I did with my XT250 after selling my Africa Twin but you've got some interesting additions I'll have to look at (clutch lever for one - my Acerbis are too close to the levers as well!). I too was getting older and found myself increasingly doing more technical riding and in more remote locations - the anxiety of doing so on a solo basis just got too much. I picked up the AT a lot - but always felt I was one lift away from an injury and usually 50km or more away from help. I also learned it's much more fun to ride hard on a small bike than ride tentative on a big bike. I built a cargo trailer camper and haul the XT with that if highway miles are required. I bought the XT and an old Honda ST1300 for road touring all for the price I sold my AT for - so that worked out great! Thanks for the video.

I made a small plexiglass windscreen, installed pegs, high rise bars, bark busters, rear rack, fog lights, power outlet, headlight. Absolutely love this bike. The tiny fog lights make riding in the woods at night sooo much better

How did you build the plexi-glass windscreen?
@@DevDog67 To make the windscreen, I just measured out a good shape. Then cut it out using a jig saw with a blade meant for cutting metal. To give the windscreen a good bend, I heated it in the oven laying the right way on a piece of 2x4. It came out so much better than I thought it would

Very top heavy and far back setup for what I think this bike can handle longterm. I have the same bike.
Fyi, a guy I was with (on 2022 klx300ds) on a recent multiday trip had to bail because his rear subframe cracked in half on one side. After riding home on 175 miles of pavement, the other side failed. He always carried a rotopax plus other stuff on the rack. He is rethinking that and has a welder lined up.
Curious, was he also using the Tusk rack?
@MotoTherapy Not sure, it was buried under his tusk highlander panniers and a big roll? He has a history of overpacking it sounds like. Notable failure for me though. I pack much lighter, but ride much faster, harder...
@@Matthew-zw9su I only carry the rotopax if I know I will be in a fuel anxiety situation, which so far has been one time. I have a smaller fuel bottle that I can also cargo-net onto the rear seat, but I rarely need to ride with either. Good to be aware of what you said, though. I’ve heard about the subframe breaking from one other person, too…possibly a different incident.
Great video, exactly what I was looking for. I had an 07 KLX250s years ago and loved it. Getting ready to retire now and plan to get the KLX300 because it's small enough to toss around off road, and also small enough to fit in the off road camper that I plan to build. Haven't looked to see if you have any performance mod videos yet, but I will. I did the KLX300R header and aftermarket muffler mod to my 250, as well as a re-jet and sprocket change....it really opened up that 250!

This is a great video! I have a 2016 GS and would like something lighter for the same reasons you stated. I too live in SC and want to do SM 500/1000 and though some sections are fine on the GS, some section definitely are not, at least for me. I too am in my late 50s and don't feel like picking p the GS on a regular basis!. Thanks for this!!

Looks great! Nice video. I also have the KLX300. I think it is a great adventure bike. I have spent many full days on the bike and have no complaints...except the seat. You will probably find it is not great after a couple full days on the trail. I am currently ordering an aftermarket seat and hopefully it will alleviate the problem. I also added a windscreen/gps holder.
What seat are you switching to? I’m sure this will also be in my future. The Seat Concept has caught my eye.

nice bike....We just got into adv biking....both my wife and I. I bought a Tiger 900 Rally Pro and she has a KLX 140 RL....( she rides only dirt ) however I am leaning more and more towards a smaller bike like the KLX300 for exclusively off road. We are trying to learn the South Carolina area for off road and adventure rides. New sub here.

It’s amazing to me that no one is making a bigger gas tank for the 300. I think Acerbis made a 3.7 gal back in 2009 for the 250 but nothing for the fuel injected model.

I'm stuck between so many options. Currently, insurance is the largest factor for me since it's really expensive here in MB, Canada. I'd like to get a KLR650, but insurance is practically double that of a KLX300 or DR-Z400. I also want to go on long trips across Canada and the US, so technically, the KLR650 reigns surpreme. Still, if I can modify the KLX300 to support longer distances, I don't see why it wouldn't work. I do worry that I'll want more power, but honestly, for this being my first bike, I just want 2 wheels that move haha. Thanks for the info!!
Good luck with your decision! In my view, the KLX300 can do highways, but it is not a highway-friendly bike, and I would not want to do extended trips with it if a lot of the riding was highway riding. BUT, if the extended trips were on back roads, then I wouldn't hesitate.
@MotoTherapy Mostly highway I think. I'd like to keep it 50/50, but I can guarantee it'll be more highway. Would swapping the tires similar to those on the SM model help significantly? Or is there more to it? I was considering the SM, but I've heard the suspension is better on the base KLX300 for offroad. I'm a relatively tall and heavier set dude, so I've gotta take that into account too.
@freac212 I'm seeing this video 4 months late, so you very well may have purchased your bike by now; but considering it's your first bike and that you'll be doing the majority of your riding on the highway, the KLX 300 would be the worst choice.
The 650 will be the best on road while the 300 will be best off road. Taking into account you're a bigger guy, I'd advise picking up the DRZ. it'll give you more power all around than the 300 and better handling off road than the 650.
I too thought the IMS tank is not worth it but have had a lot of riding days where I could have been spared having to stop to get fuel on the way back home. I'll get that tank or get a factory one to modify whenever I can afford it. Sometimes convenience comes at a high price.

Nice build and nice little fleet of bikes I see there. I had an XT250 with a KLX300. Unfortunately, I believe I either got a lemon with my KLX or the dealership I bought it from had an incompetent mechanic. At about 10 months and 3400 miles or so, it started running like garbage. The dealership did a top end rebuild but the bike was no better. It spent several more weeks in the shop. After a total of over three months of not being able to ride my bike, I cut my losses and sold it to a different dealership (who thought they could get it running right, I suppose they did but I don't know). I still have the XT250 but sort of miss the KLX300. I replaced the KLX300 with a true dirt bike, the CRF250RX and plated the CRF, but a real dual sport would be better for anything more than connecting close trailheads. The XT is fun, but just is not quite enough performance for me and the ergos are a bit tight. I'm considering another KLX300 or maybe a KLX300R with the dual sport kit. A real subframe might be the deciding factor. I will be also checking out a CRF300L, but I rode one back to back with my KLX when I still had it and know that at the time, the KLX was the better bike for me and the riding I tend to do which leans more to the dirt side than pavement. If I tended more to pavement, I'd go with the CRF300L.

@@andersd8956 I got a big bore kit alright. I ended up getting a CRF450L. I really was contemplating another KLX300 and then upgrading it. But I have a CRF250RX and just love the top flight suspension and all that. I couldn't go back to the KLX. The CRF450L has all the power and good suspension I'd need. But I did have to address the ECU. The stock fueling was rough. Now that it's sorted out, I'm super happy.

Rode both 250 and 300 from both companies definitely prefer red
My sub frame broke with the weight of a roto-pax on the tail. I did not use this rack with the supports from the rack to the lower attach points on the frame. Maybe that will help, but beware of the poor strength of the rear sub-frame.

I think you are a bit unfair to yourself, most can't reliably pick up a 'midweight' motorcycle in 'just wrong' conditions. I've heard an mx guy state that his criteria for the weight was "to be able to pick up while standing on one leg while pushing up a hill". Nice build!

Great build, great video. I like the KLX300 but the small tank, and lack of a substantially larger aftermarket tank, is a deal breaker for now. Rotopax is a good solution but would prefer to avoid it.
I can comfortably get 100 miles to a tank and with my rotopax I can go around 200
I would definitely go back to the dealer and make them fix all that crap putting on different guards, other than bark busters which you requested is not satisfactory specially, when you’re cutting down the levers for the break in the clutch not good. I would love to know the dealer that did that, so I don’t end up going there and getting the same crap!

Nice mods! I'll be getting some of those shock sox. I'd give IMS a call. I heard there's a 3.2gal tank for a different model of Kawasaki that can fit on the KLX300. I'm not looking for a bigger tank right now, but I'd love to know more about this possible option.
Thanks. I actually did correspond with IMS, and here is their response to me on August 3rd:
“I’m afraid that we still have not developed any new or larger size tank for that KLX300 model of yours. The only tank that we had available right now was going to be the 2.7 gallon size that we originally designed for the KLX250S (EFI) model, and I know that’s not as big as some KLX riders were hoping for. As of right now, we wouldn’t have another chance to work on a larger tank until the end of the year or maybe start of 2023, but it’s no guarantee. Sorry for any inconvenience this might cause for you, but please let me know if you had any other questions or concerns.”
@@MotoTherapy Thanks for the info! I'll probably wait to see if they announce something around early 2023. If not sometime in the spring I'll look into other options. Planning to do a BDR on the KLX next spring.

I chose one of the last wr250rs over both the klx300 and the Honda 300l for 2 reasons 1 I it was in stock 2 the suspension. I'm glad about my decision do to all the problems some have with the klx300 and the crapy lame suspension of the Honda.. plus I am 6ft2 with 34" inseam so I can flat foot on the wr250r.. still looking into reckless bags for it for short trips..have a tenere 700 for longer trips

This, or a DR650? I think this is a fun not too long distance bike. But a little light and small perhaps for ADV. I haven't pulled the trigger yet on which bike!
Both are great bikes. The DR650 is a proven machine that will definitely handle long distances better. The KLX is light nimbler-a bit easier to toss around.
Can I ask why you chose the KLX over the CRF ? I’m 62 and have been going the same route as you. I have a 21 CRF 300 l but I’m getting ready to change some things and wonder if the klx would be a better platform.
@@Mjr1348 I only chose the KLX over the CRF because of the KLX’s better suspension. I love my KLX. That said, I am very intrigued by the new CFMoto Ibex 450 (aka 450 MT). It didn’t exist when I bought my KLX, but seems to check a lot of my boxes. The only drawback (but not a total show-stopper) for me is that it’s 100% Chinese.
You didn’t really show the “barkbuster”installation reference the mount interference with the front brake hose above the upper triple clamp guide. I had a problem with wearing the rubber sheath . I drilled a new hole in the barkbuster about an inch short of the old hole for the mount. Lots better but the hose can still contact the mount slightly.
I neglected to say the mounts I have are the “universal “ type that have a short cylinder running from the handlebar to the flat barkbuster.
My brake line does contact my handguard when the suspension is fully compressed. I have since wrapped electrical tape around the line, and it seems to be protecting the line well enough. My next solution would be to zip-tie a piece of plastic or PVC (or something smooth) to the handguard to help eliminate any harsh rubbing.
I sold a KLR650 and bought a Versys 300X. I have had a lot of fun on the 300x but it sounds like it’s screaming it’s guts out on the highway and doesn’t do as well off-road. I was thinking I would go back to a KLR 650 until I saw this video. Do you think the KLR650 Adventure is too heavy?
I suppose “too heavy” depends on the rider (both strength and skill level) and intended use. For me, the KLR would be heavier than my preference for any sort of serious off-pavement riding, primarily because I wouldn’t want to lift it after the inevitable drops. Plus, it’s a tall bike and I have short legs. But everyone is different, and the KLR certainly offers a good value for the price.

What part of SC are you? I’m in the Charleston area and have a 2018 KLX 250 that I’m building into a lightweight adventure bike.

Any modifications made to the throttle cables or clutch cable to run that bar setup??
No cable mods. The front brake line does run some of the clamp of the left handguard, so I have wrapped the line in that spot with a layer of electrical tape. Seems to provide adequate protection.
Great video. I've got the 300sm which I've modded for offroad. Curious as to what the box/electronics is on the left side or your bars directly in front of your GPS mount? Is that part of the GPS system or???????

I wonder why there isn't a kickstart on these bikes and do you know if they make a kickstart kit or is it like ktm and you can't even install a kit for it
I’ve never heard of anyone adding a kick starter…I doubt it’s possible.
I just got my 2021 and looked up the Auxito Headlight. Is there just a bulb model you could refer me to? It's really confusing out there as I'm new.

Careful with the “quick release” contraption on the TUSK rack, their so quick they’ll release even while you’re still riding down the road 😂😖 happened to me.
…and yes, they’re extremely (unnecessarily) heavy and overbuilt.
Yeah, "overbuilt" is great when the rack ends up function as crash protection, but your "unnecessarily" modifier is absolutely on target--especially for the quick mount plates...they could have cut outs, be half their weight, and still be plenty durable.
On my 2023 Regarding the drain hoses I have one tan hose underneath that looks like it connects to the gas tank. You have two hoses-any idea what your second tan hose is for 🤷🏻♂️

Thanks for the excellent video. I'm thinking of wiring my Zumo 395lm myself or having the dealer do it for $200 to $270. Was it difficult installing yours? Did you wire it to the battery or is there a way to wire it to the ignition switch so it turns the unit off when the key is turned off?
Mine is wired directly to the battery. I actually prefer this “unswitched” power to “switched” power, as I don’t have to wait for the unit to reboot every time I turn the key off. But, this does call for removing the unit from the cradle when the bike will be turned off for longer periods of time, to prevent excessive battery drain (but it’s a quick release, so it takes 2 seconds).
The installation is easy, if you are at all handy. It involves removing the seat and side panels in order to tuck and zip-tie the wiring so that it is out of the way and can’t be seen. There’s no right or wrong way to run the power cord-you just don’t want it resting directly on the hot motor, or exposed so it could get caught on a branch, etc.

I am looking for a windshield for my KLX like the CRF rally has.
It’s not exactly a windshield, but I did just order a “mini fairing” from Adventure Spec. I hope to to an install video and a review when it arrives.
I tried the Adventure Spec mini-fairing. It 100% blocked my view of and access to the bike's instrument cluster. Props to AS for a seamless returm process.
I think T-Rex has one now.. haven't seen it in person, but it looks interesting.
What about suspension setup?
I weigh about 220 lbs. I tightened everything a few turns/clicks, and it is adequate. I don’t see a pressing need for a suspension upgrade-at least anytime in the near future.

Why not the tusk aluminum boxes? I see they make a medium size for dual sports.
It is certainly an option, and I’ve used the aluminum boxes on other bikes, but I wanted soft bags on my dual spurt since I tend to use it on more technical terrain. Aluminum boxes can hurt more when crashing.
Good point. I own a 2023 KLX300 and am making a decision on the luggage. I am new to dual sports so I didn’t even consider that. My FJ-09, and FJR1300 both have hard panniers but I haven’t been down on either of those. I know I’ll be going down on the Klx.😂. I did pick up some motocross boots for added protection. I plan on being fully geared up with knee-shin guards, and upper body protection as well. I did the snorkel mod, delkevic exhaust, EJK, and skid plate so far. Luggage and bars are next. Also need new foot pegs. The factory ones are terrible.

@@plumberjoe80 Check out pivot pegs..expensive but they really help when you have those large boots on and want to shift gears and you can pivot your left foot. Also when standing you don't realize it but they pivot and keep your weight centered on the bike. I would definitely go for soft luggage. I have large adventure bikes with hard panniers, but for the adventures on the KLX will be more challenging roads and potential for falling...on the TAT I fell 3 times...glad I had the soft luggage (Mosko Moto) PMR makes a good rear rack and side racks for the KLX.
Have you done anything to the suspension?
Not yet, other than adjusting it for my fat arse. I do believe a new shock is in my future, though. But I can live with the stock one if needed-it’s decent enough.

I’m 5’9” with a 29” inseam (short legs, long torso), and 220 lbs.

@@OlsonADV Note: It’s not a street bike, so I just needed to accept that I couldn’t flat foot both sides at the same time. Not a big deal once you’re used to it. In terms of ergos, the distance between the seat and pegs is quite comfortable for me.
@@MotoTherapy great information. I’m planning on getting a dual sport for my second bike. I like the thought of being able to do more dirt roads here in Georgia. I know it will not come close to my Versys 650 on the paved roads.
@@MotoTherapy Seat Concepts make a model with 1" less padding which would help with your flat footed placement on the bike...I think that is better than a lowering kit which then you have to make adjustments to the side stand.
No offence but that is too much weight and too high up with the top box/rotopax.
Ditch the racks, use a giant loop coyote and their gas bag. Weigh both, should be a big difference
I like the Tusks and top box, but I’m sure the Coyote is a great system, too (for a bit more coin, as well)
