I've been playing for about 4 hours and have been really enjoying it. It is lower budget and has some QoL stuff that could be improved but that really hasn't bothered me. It didn't look like David did it in his video, but you can recruit the drunk in the first base area really early on and he has a dune buggy vehicle. Make sure you drink each thing the bartender initially has and the ones you find early on and you can get the drunk. Also, Pochi the dog is adorable and the PS4 version works on PS5 as well.
My biggest gripe with this game is the lack of story. I didn’t mind it at first, but then I did some research and found out this remaster removed the cinematic cutscenes, including the opening one.

I'm a huge fan of Metal Max having played most of the titles, even the Japanese ones, and this doesn't really show the best of the series which is more like Dragon Quest with tanks. I agree about the controls - having the same button to attack and retreat confused me for quite a while. But eventually I got used to it and adjusted. The battles are slower than in the original game and there's a lot less story content. Maybe they streamlined the game for a wider appeal? They also dropped some of the more sleazy content.
The first few hours can be a struggle, fighting endless ants and avoiding the stronger foes, but once you get past that and find more team members and tanks the game is great fun. It's a very addictive loop - fight monsters, pick up treasure and modify your tanks to take on stronger enemies and Wanted enemies.
the two metal max games in the DS is fully fan translated. haven't played it yet but heard some good reviews.
I remember instruction manuals. They were just so useful and included art, lore, characters backstory like birthdays and blood type etc. Some had tips for the start of the game and a place to write notes too. I remember getting a new game as a little kid and taking the book with me to school the next day to read up on it and talk games with my friends. We had some good times back then.

I hadn’t heard of this game before you talked about it, thank you so much for bringing so many of these unknowns to us. And showing game play with honest opinion is why I love your videos so much.
Although I’ve never been a big “tank” fan (the controls usually drive me crazy), this one looks pretty amazing. I actually want to play this game, the idea of upgrading my tank and exploring the world as I do, looks like you do some hunting of bounties. Overall, it looks like it could be a fun game.
Now I just need to find time to be able to play it.

In 2022, you would think game designers could find a balance between the constant interruptions of Navi (OOT) and Alia (MMX5) and the absence of direction in this game.
Yes, the game is a bit rough around the edges, but I personally loved it, had a lot of fun with it! Finished it a couple of days ago, it was a nice surprise

I love this game and I love the one on vita. I have a high tolerance to jank so I often enjoy games that most people label as bad. Don't let the 3.5/5 star reviews on the psn store scare you away from this underrated gem!! If you're still unsure, wait for a sale and then pick it up!
This game looks so cool, and I'm a tank nut. So I might check this out!
I'm kinda torn on this one. It feels like doing hunts and upgrading the tank could be a lot of fun as a breather between bigger games. I might just wait for a sale

I think I would prefer metal max xeno over reborn because xeno has a more standard turn based battle system. Once I'm back home from my trip I should check on if I can get physical at a good price.
Same here, tbh that's what I thought I was getting gameplay wise In this version, extremely dissapointing.

It really was a shame how much they changed the original game for the worse. I've played the original on PS4 for 270+ hours and put this down after around 10.
David, if you kinda like the game, please consider checking out the original. The digital version goes offline on the PSN on August 8th 2022.

The combat system confuses me. If you aren't knocked out in the trading between monsters, the encounter disengaged after a few turns. Is that supposed to happen?!
Hi David! I was waiting for your thoughts on this one. Such a shame this ended up being kinda meh. Seems like if they added some QoL options and the ability to change how you control the tank would have helped a lot. Might wait for a sale on this one. What Metal Max game would you recommend? Ironically I could suggest the original if you have a PS4. It's a different experience and no tank controls.
I know you asked this a while ago but I'd say either metal max 2 returns (fan translation available on ds) or metal sage. Metal saga is a much more flawed game but its a good introductory if you're cool with weird ps2 rpgs. Metal max 2 returns is probably the best in the series tho.
Still gotta get around to playing this before I buy another version.

As a new player, the controls for the tank is annoying. The early game is brutal, and I kept on dying. Without knowing how to beat the boss, I became frustrated. I like the game and finished it. For those who want to get pass the boss, hit and run tactics is essential in the early game. It took me hours to figure out that the health of the boss does not reset after I leave the battle for a certain amount of time.
i know the majority will no agree, but the original xeno graphics look so much better for my than reborn
I’m honestly still on the fence about this. It looks cool, but just not sure I’ll enjoy it. But if it goes on sale I may give it a try. I’m currently playing through “Shadowrun Returns: Dragonfall” right now on Switch. If you’re into cyberpunk-meets-urban fantasy in a good way, then this is the story for you, lol. The gameplay is “Xcom” style tactical RPG but the story and characters really make it.
Same here! For Shadowrun, I'll wait for a sale! Though happy reviews have given favor to it, the bugs and crashes are a downer and find myself annoyed the developers tried to trick you with that decent sale they put on the limit of when the game came out! You'd get it earlier and even cheaper, but you'd be waiting who knows how long for a patch, if a patch even fixes anything! The rate of companies giving up on proper patching annoys me sometimes!!
The decrease they had on this one wasn't good enough in my opinion! Going to wait for a sale that drops it at least under $30 at best! Or if I save enough money to burn and have no alternatives! The game looks good, but not enough to not look elsewhere for now!

From the looks of it, this seems to have a Xenoblade X with it's skells vibe. 2 varied control & combat styles. I love XenoX, as my fav game of all time. It'd be awesome if this one could replicate some of that min/max'ing & mechanized combat. How do you feel it compares to XenoX in those 2 aspects, I am expecting the other aspects to lack given it's budget. I've not heard of this series before so I'm basing this impression solely on what I see on screen here

i played the orignal MM Xeno and I found it to be empty and...kinda dull. hearing these reviews does nothing to make me justify the remaster. FUCK If they want to remaster something remaster Metal Saga. that game has ALOT more going for it than this one. and i was supprised to find out this was a VITA title.
