As in real life this situation ends with needing replacement parts, sucks man. I’ve got the exact problem by sounds of it. I got a little bike running that sat for idk how long, years at least. Then after a few days and some short rides I went to start her up and nothing. No spark at all to the ignition, and my battery had been dying out, it’s brand new, brand new spark plug, ignition coil. Wiring looks ok, no blown fuses either. I opened up the engine casing today, and yep my stator looks like shit. Bolts are so rusted I can’t even get it out. Hopefully this solves the issue. It’s a super fun bike. She needs to live!
This video was super helpful, thanks so much. I ran into this same exact issue last night with my first bike and had no idea what the problem was. Now that I know the issue, it can be addressed. Much appreciated!
Just the simple idea to use the manual and test the components just got my bike going after I found it had a dodgy ignition coil when I originally thought it was the woodruff key skipping
I have a question for you since you work on bikes a lot. I am wanting a dual sport bike and will probably put SM wheels and tires on it at some point. I like the KTM 350 EXC-F but don't like the price and I keep seeing things that say they may not hold up well and need lots of maintenance also. I like the Yamaha WR250R also and then there is the Suzuki DRZ400SM. The DRZ is not fuel injected and have read not the quality of the Yamaha either. I would be on the road mostly but not long rides and not any interstate highways either. Mostly just for fun. What do you think of these bikes?
+feelnrite Well the KTM and Yamaha can be made into Sumos BUT they were never designed for the rigors of full traction on pavement which is hard on the driveline. So that said the longevity of some of those internal components is up in the air. Likewise those engines were designed around 30 minute motos which maintence schedules to match, this can also be said about any of the other 250-450F bikes from the other manufactures. The DRZ-SM bike was designed around double duty with a lower performance engine to maximize durability over time. It really depends on your wants and needs, high performance or longevity because in this arena you can't have both.
i need help I have a Yamaha warrior 350 I replaced the stator pick up coil new kill switch new cdi box and been rebuilt bottom end top end and still no spark
+Josh Osgood you must be grounding some where
Will you get any spark if those coils under the flywheel go bad? My bike runs OK up to about 3500 RPMs and then sputters. New plug no change...
No. But you trouble seems to be carburation.
I have a problem with my qaud bike I have a vuka 110cc engine I have spark but don't look like a lot of spark but just want start
Someone cut my wires to my zzr 600 Kawasaki 2008 I put ignition wire back on it but it is not firing could you be able to tell me how I would know what the problem is
I guess not lol
I bought a used 175 Kawasaki 2001 Eliminator having only 2450 miles. It has sat a lot and unknowing and not taking on a good test drive bought it for $900.00 and finding first because of missing I cleaned a rats nest out of the breather filter and replaced, then it is bogging down in all gears at higher RPM's but, no gauge for me to tell you, only higher RPM's without being under much strain. It does not shut down but, stalls bogging with no power missing. Please, can you BIG GUY HELP ME? Is the coil breaking down, is it in the fuel system ya think? Please touch base? Thanking You I am Frank, from TN.
+Frank Bolin its a fuel system problem from sitting, check my other videos for help on that. Specifically cleaning.
I thank your so so very much! I have started from basics and drained all the gas out of the tanks also ran it out of fuel until stopped. Man, I can not thank your enough and your site is so helpful especially since I have kept my motor cycle licenses from 1970 and born in 1953. I can not express enough how much you take a moment for me as it is totally phenomenal as to the history of you helping your have achieved. You are as that of a Total Instructor, Teacher with Qualifications and skill with in your TRADES! I know as there is so so much joy and satisfaction with inner personal rewards you full fill with in yourself! It is totally amazing how interested and needing persons have can to rely and depending on you! Thank Your and I am still peddling on my Cycle.
+Frank Bolin glad I could help
My 2001 yz400f has a weak spark it has a new coil. Would the stator cause a weak spark?
It could. Test it.
yes defiantly
If u reply could make my week pw 80 ran like a trooper new top end lost spark one day new coil will get 1 spark for every 10ish kick I cabt figure it out went into water but flywheel and coil dont look bad but water hit it wat could it be
Magneto coils. Test them.
@@thejunkman how would I test it
I am sorry. I should have linked this video that I have that gives the specifics on how to test your PW 80 magneto coils. czcams.com/video/uggJMnuexMc/video.html
great video, thanks.
hi scoty, I have 4 cyl motorcycle and every time I take it on the road it bogs down after running couple of miles and then engine cones to stop. after an hour or so or starts again and then same thing happens on the road. my motorbike was sitting in garage floor couple of months. do u think the spark plug is the issue. I guess everyone it runs a while spark plugs get hot and shut down due to carbon deposit. can u help me in diagnosis.
I would say it is the coils. The insulation or winding are old and when they get hot the resistance changes causing them to change the current allowed to jump the gap.
+thejunkman thanks mate
my kx 250 has an orange spark it starts by pulling it with a car and will start before it cools down. im replacing the coil wire it was hard to bend. electrical is not my bag. it doesnt back fire i replaced the flywheel the key way was to wide. ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Kevin Stearns go through the tests in the manual, its pretty comprehensive in tjat reguard
ive already done that it doesnt help ill figure it out.
+Kevin Stearns so your pickup and magneto coils test with the correct ohm readings? The symptoms you describe suggest that the insulation is breaking down around the iron cores
i dont have a pickup the stator tested good i bought another coil. im waiting for it. cdi is good. ill let you know.
well i checked the coil and stator both are good im waiting for the cdi. the saga continues.
Please help! New to the bike world. I just bought a 1999 sportster 1200 2 weeks ago, the bike ran really good until a couple of days ago. After riding 20 min or so I stopped at the bank went in came out and when I tried to start bike it clicked 1 time like low battery voltage then nothing. ( no lights, tach, or Speedo power) I removed and cleaned battery cables, still nothing. Being new to bike world I unknowingly boosted bike off with car! Bike started up but when I unhooked jumper cables the bike started running a little rougher, then died after about 2min. I then took battery to parts store and had it checked. ( bad battery). Bought new battery, the bike had all lights and power and started right up. But now it runs rough, will hardly rev up. Runs so rough it will hardly move out of its tracks. Where should I start?
Check charging system. When jump starting with a running car, too much amps and burns up the stator usually.
I own a Military disposal 1976 Royal Enfield 350cc Bullet kept in perfect condition with more or less retro looks
And your having troubles with the ignition?

I legit thought I had a different window open on my browser when that disco came on. Didn't quite peg you as the saturday night fever type.
My ignition is "Stayin' Alive"
Sounds like a porn movie!
What??? So the answer?
There is no such thing as an open short. A short by definition is a short circuit reducing the ohm (Ω), or a conductor across a circuit, shortening the path of voltage flow. An open is a break in the wiring.
I was about to say the same thing.
Without a calibrated high quality multi meter I wouldn’t trust any of the numbers you measure if it truely has to be within 10%.
Sure a cheap meter will tell you good (continuity) or no good (open circuit) but as far as 200ohm vs 250ohm nah has to be calibrated.
Ps. Great video by the way very informative ✌️
Not really, friend> even a 5 dollar meter will be 1 or 2 points from the 250 ohm; but .23 ohms (this is low ohms, only specific or expensive meters have that scale!!) is *another* story!!! you have to know what you're doing!!!!......anyway,i would check the meter with a known resistor first; and this with any meter, because most will get *funny* when the battery goes down.
I have a dirt bike and it takes so long to start I take like 25min trying to start
Its not an ignition problem then. Check my carburetor videos.
@@thejunkman thanks I will
Nice drop of porn music in the background
It doesn't show that you actually have spark now.
Check the link in the description. This is an excerpt from my restoration series.
How do you turn the fuckin music off ? Had to stop !
dont bother crazy music hard to hear this guy rambul on .sorry thats how I see it
I am glad you found it helpful.
Wish you would have shown you doing the detailed test man. Would have helped a lot of people out like myself. We learned nothing from this no offense
