Martin g Baker I agree with everything you said. I’m a bit younger then you, I’m 37 and from London and like you, I didn’t know about racism until around 12 years old and it was when Stephen Lawrence got stabbed to death. That alone made me hate racism. I still think about Stephen to this very day and he will be imprinted in my mind and heart forever. His death hurt me so much because you could tell that he was a true gentleman, just by looking at a photo of him and the fact that he was attacked and killed for no reason, other then being Black. Which of course is pure madness. The main thing that hurts me about racism, is that it’s just plain wrong morally and is just stupid. Simply because not every Black person is bad, so how can you dislike them all.? It’s like having an argument with somebody that wears glasses, then suddenly hating everybody that wears glasses. Or getting beaten up by a man in a suit and then hating all business men. Silly analogy but you know what I mean. NOT all black people are bad so why can’t people just be normal and feel anger towards the person or people that are bad and leave colour out of it. And yes, Dave put on a great show. I love the fact that he plays the piano and raps. I thought he was great before I heard him play piano but that just makes him even better. I wonder if he plays any more instruments? We may see him play Violin next 😂. Joking aside, I don’t think any other Rapper has rapped and played piano . Just thinking rapper and piano don’t sound right but Dave showed us otherwise.

*I’m a white British female and I cried hearing this song for the first time! NO ONE should have to experience what he says. It hurts to watch a lot of black people (it’s ok to say that here in England, not African European or anything! It’s not derogatory!) react to this and say they experienced the same stuff. The fact he’s 21 and is this much of a lyrical genius if you ask me!! This song’s BEAUTIFUL!!*

@@strangemillions348 oh and I might be able to give some context for some of the references in there that a non-UK person wouldn't know about.
The bit at the end of his performance isn't from the original song. That was an extra rap he wrote just for the Brit award performance (you might notice that part isn't at the end of the video). In that part he makes a few references.
The guy in the pictures on the piano is Jack Merritt. He was killed in the London Bridge terrorist attack last year. He worked with criminals and ex-cons and helped them gain qualifications and generally get rehabilitated. he worked with Dave's brother who is serving a life sentence. Saskia Jones is also pictured, she was also killed in that attack.
The Windrush generation are around half a million people who moved to the UK after world war 2 from the caribbean. They were invited by the UK government because of severe labour shortages due to the war. They came here totally legally. A couple of years ago some of them started being deported. Their documentation proving they were here legally had been lost or destroyed. Not by them, but by the government. Yet they were still deported. Most of these people were deported back to countries that they'd left when they were young children so they had no family there or no knowledge of the country they were being deported to.
And the Grenfell victims. In 2017 a towerblock in London caught fire and due to unsafe cladding being used in the tower the fire spread rapidly and killed 72 people, many of whom were poor and/or ethnic minorities. Some of these people still haven't been rehomed, and many towers still contain the unsafe cladding that caused the fire to spread so quickly. The government turn a blind eye, and have even blamed the victims. It was all due to cost cutting, yet they're spending £400million refurbishing Buckingham Palace.

What's sad is that my dad is African. He's white, but he was born and raised in South Africa, as with his grandparents, during Apartheid, he was taught that he was superior. They were taught not to feel empathy for people in the informal settlements across the road. I'm glad he always stood against it, but it was obvious that he was given advantages, becoming a manager of a mine while the actual miners never given a chance. That's why now he's left geology to become a citizens advice consultant in the UK, to help people who are disadvantaged by the system.

In the music video the guy who pulls up his tracksuit bottom to reveal a tattoo of an AK47 is Raheem Sterling, he's a Jamaican born Englishman who plays football (soccer) for Manchester City and the English national team, he's a superstar now and one of the best footballers in the world but before the World Cup in 2018 the mainstream media had an agenda and would always hate on our national team focusing on their lifestyles etc. Well..... with knife crime and in particular 'black on black' crime a big focus of talking points on the news at the time they decided to attack Raheem for not being a professional role model and talked about the irresponsibility of having such an outlandish and brazen tattoo which they said almost seems to glamourize guns. Raheem Sterling then came out and explained that he lost his dad at the age 2, he was shot dead in Jamaica and the tattoo was not only a tribute to him but a reminder to Raheem himself, a promise that he would never ever touch a gun himself and that he will let his feet and right leg in particular do all the shooting. The story left the media back peddling and in turn united the nation in full support of our boys for the first time since 1996 (when we hosted the European Championship and started singing 'its coming home'), we got to the semi finals and it was probably the best summer and international performance of my lifetime maybe tied with 96.

Please react to Dave's SBTV Warm Up Session freestyle. It's one of his early videos. It's deep as fuck and the punch lines are complex, often with double meanings. You get an understanding of the pain he had already been through at a tender age. Trust me fam, you need it! Peace and love from London!
