I'm half Ukrainian, from everyone on my mother's side of the family, but I was born and raised in England, so I only know very few words. my great-grandmother doesn't speak any english and considering she might not have long left to live I've decided to learn as much Ukrainian as I can. Thank-you for this really informative lesson, it has really helped me!

I am half Ukrainian and had Saturday lessons many years ago as a child. My dad was raised by immigrants and grew up speaking the language but we never spoke it or practiced at home.
I don't remember much from the lessons but I was surprised at how easily the words came out of my mouth as I tried to pronounce this. So grateful for my earlier exposure and for the internet making this knowledge available to me now.

Many years ago I worked with several Ukrainian ladies , along with some people from Poland too.....I always loved working with them but I was too nervous to speak their languages, or at least try to speak it :-) I had a few of the ladies trying to coax me into speaking it.....Ukrainian is such a beautiful sounding language....but my mouth and brain are not usually best of friends when trying to learn a language :-)
My best wishes not just to the good people of Ukraine but to the good people in Russia and all other countries around the world too.....sometimes the bad that we humans do can drown out and overshadow the good we do.

It's closer to West Slavic than Russian which was created by Balkan Orthodox monks for non-Slavic population in the east conquered by the Kievian dynasty.

Thank you Olga for another wonderful lesson, as someone who is just starting to learn the language, seeing how a native speaker speaks some of the phrases I've learned really helps.
Just curious, do you know any good websites where people learning ukrainian can talk to native speakers, because it would be much easier to learn and correct any mistakes if you can actually use them in conversation rather then repeating them over and over to a cd.
    Thanks

+Olga Reznikova Кстати, заметил одну разницу. В Украине говорят "скучаю за", а в России "скучаю по". Я так понимаю, что это прямое заимствование из украинского, например "скучаю за тобою". Сейчас прочитал, что это украинизм, очень распространённый на Кубани, Воронежской и Курской областях.
