I'm half Ukrainian, from everyone on my mother's side of the family, but I was born and raised in England, so I only know very few words. my great-grandmother doesn't speak any english and considering she might not have long left to live I've decided to learn as much Ukrainian as I can. Thank-you for this really informative lesson, it has really helped me!
Where is your grandmother living in Ukraine?

Ye, I love Ukraine from Serbia. Ukraine would have much more closer language to Balkans if it weren't that much of Russian influence. I would love that we all can speak same language.

I am communicating with someone in Ukraine. I want to learn as well for clear communication is good grounds for any relationship. I know there is much more to learning a language that I am not native to, but this is a start. Thank you for keeping these up. P.S. It brought a smile to my heart to hear the baby coo in the background near the 2:15 time.
Same here :)
Me too! 😀
Ukranian was spoken in our house when I was growing up by grandmother; emigrated from the Russian controlled part of Austria before WWII. I only recognize about half of the phrases however. We had both Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox churches in our community, Lyndora, PA. and they still exist. Sympathy for the Ukranian people is high and getting higher all the time...Thanks Olga!
My Grandmother was also from Ukraine and came to the USA from Austria
i definitely remember all of those phrases when my grandmother was alive , when i was young...i kinda cracked up a bit when you said " what " in Ukrainian...its just brought back memories

Thank you so much for this! I'm in Lviv on short notice in order to meet with our local engineering team, and this has been very helpful.
I am half Ukrainian and had Saturday lessons many years ago as a child. My dad was raised by immigrants and grew up speaking the language but we never spoke it or practiced at home.
I don't remember much from the lessons but I was surprised at how easily the words came out of my mouth as I tried to pronounce this. So grateful for my earlier exposure and for the internet making this knowledge available to me now.
I have a similar story. I am from Ukrainian but was adopted by Americans and came to the U.S. I did not keep my Russian language but I seem to pronounce Russian and Ukrainian words well according to other Ukrainians and Russians. Keep it up! Biтаю!
Cool, I’ve lived in Czech for almost three years and have of course been learning the language, so I was curious to see the similarities, and differences. Thanks for posting.
I love how Ukrainian speak "soft tone" like "yu", "rozmovlyayu", "mozhyu", anything with "yu".
And I believe if I learn Ukrainian, I'll much easily learn Polska and Belaruska (heavily tied in history).
Greetings from Indonesia.
Much better vid, very clear and easy, I'm going to Poltava in a few weeks and I will be learning this for sure, dyakuyu.

Many years ago I worked with several Ukrainian ladies , along with some people from Poland too.....I always loved working with them but I was too nervous to speak their languages, or at least try to speak it :-) I had a few of the ladies trying to coax me into speaking it.....Ukrainian is such a beautiful sounding language....but my mouth and brain are not usually best of friends when trying to learn a language :-)
My best wishes not just to the good people of Ukraine but to the good people in Russia and all other countries around the world too.....sometimes the bad that we humans do can drown out and overshadow the good we do.
🙏
Hey wherever you are, I hope you are safe! Thank you for the language lesson!
Thank you olga! I probably going to listen this many times over and over and say it after you say it lol...hugs! ;) greetings snd blessings from the Netherlands! 💜👍

Very useful, many thanks Olga, I'm visiting Lviv this year so this is just what I need : )
Absolutely brilliant, Thank-you! I work with both Ukrainian and Russian people and have asked how the different phrases sounded and was having hard time understanding the differences from my American perspective. I can hear the difference now.

Thanks again for video. For me, it is a really interesting topic and it really shows, that the ukrainian language is really more similar to other slavic languages (my native slovak) than to russian....also more beautiful :)
I'm part Ukrainian on my great grandmother's side on my dad's dad's side and I found this video very helpful.
Pryvit Olga, long-time viewer and appreciator of your many videos... As an American, the most difficult phase that I have encountered is the same as when I started to study Russian and Mandarin - the alphabets are so different and represent pronunciations, not just spellings... Big thanks for your aid from many time zones away. I have been binging your videos since Ukraine has become a top search item on YT... Good fortune during the upcoming months especially and please keep your audience updated on the circumstances of your beautiful country and yourself.
Thanks Olga, I just started watching your vids and is being easier for me learn Ukranian than English because my primary language is Spanish (How you are writing we pronounce same as Spanish)

Excelente canal. Muchas gracias Olga. Por fin encuentro un canal que enseñe el idioma ucraniano, ya que la mayoría de los canales de yotubers eslavos solo enseñan el idioma ruso, pero en mi caso me interesa más aprender el hermoso idioma ucraniano. A partir de hoy tienes un nuevo suscriptor. Saludos desde Chile. Ojalá puedas subir mas lecciones de ucraniano.

Very helpful, thanks. I am teaching English to a Ukrainian student and now I can say a few words to her in her language. A lot of the Ukranian phrases are similar to Slovak, which my grandparents spoke, so I picked up a little from them. I look forward to learning more, thanks again.

Wow I am medical student in Ukraine and first year but cannot speak and understand Ukrainian but your video superb and teach some basic word in Ukrain
Hi. This is wonderful. Please keep up the good work!!!
You are very good! I appreciate your hard work and effort!!
Пам'ятайте, що, на відміну від англійської, ми маємо рід і число, тому до I'm hungry, наприклад, треба було дати й переклад жіночого роду - Я голодна. А, скажімо, до Excuse me можна було дати ще форму однини - Вибач.
Hi Olga it is great to hear a native Ukrainian speaker. I only know half the Ukrainian words & phrases you have mentioned in this video. I only wish that my parents and grandparents taught me Ukrainian properly when I was young as I was born and live in Australia. I'm a third generation Australian Ukrainian.
But you already know some phrases!!! its better than nothing;-)
Special for you: it's very funny to learn the ukrainian language by singing the songs. Sing in ukrainian, lyrics with transcription: czcams.com/video/Y6uS_xVHu6Y/video.html

Thank you very much! It's very useful for my trip to Ukraine in May :-) I thought that Ukrainian is very similar to Russian but now I can see it's pretty similar to Slovak and Polish as well.
It's closer to West Slavic than Russian which was created by Balkan Orthodox monks for non-Slavic population in the east conquered by the Kievian dynasty.

er lo Well no, majority of Russians are pure Slavs and the ethnicity of the Finno-urgics are derived only in eastern Russia rather than western. Large parts of western Russia are ethnically Slavic no matter if they speak the language derived from the Bulgarians

Thank you for this! This is the same dialect my grandparents from Lviv spoke. I miss hearing the language ❤️
Jeni D actually, Olga doesn't use any dialect here. You can find some fun or music videos with Lviv dialect on CZcams, but they are mostly in Ukrainian (I mean without subtitles)
Not so similar to Russian as I would have thought. Some can resemble Czech "rozumiyou" "rozumim" in Czech...
I understand czech (reading, listening a bit less) and understood 80% of what she said and i never read ukrainian before this video so that was a big shocker to me that many things are pretty much the same.
Kak vas zvat and yas vas zvaty are REALLY similar though. One is Russian the other is Ukrainian

Very nice my dear thanks a lot for making videos.
These are very helpful
Thank you Olga for another wonderful lesson, as someone who is just starting to learn the language, seeing how a native speaker speaks some of the phrases I've learned really helps.
Just curious, do you know any good websites where people learning ukrainian can talk to native speakers, because it would be much easier to learn and correct any mistakes if you can actually use them in conversation rather then repeating them over and over to a cd.
Thanks

Olga you forgot 'Dobroyi Nochi' (Good Night). Don't you think will make a video to teach your subscribers an easy Ukrainian song, with English translation? It would be very nice :)
+Olga Reznikova Кстати, заметил одну разницу. В Украине говорят "скучаю за", а в России "скучаю по". Я так понимаю, что это прямое заимствование из украинского, например "скучаю за тобою". Сейчас прочитал, что это украинизм, очень распространённый на Кубани, Воронежской и Курской областях.
