  • Why Is Leverkusen Winning The League Bigger Than Leicester's Win?
    Fresh off the back of a dominant 3-0 win against holders Bayern Munich, Leverkusen are riding high with a five point lead at the top of the Bundesliga. They are still the only unbeaten team in Europe and look to be marching towards the title. No one could have seen this coming as with only a little over a year in the job, Xabi Alonso has been able to completely transform his team into one of the best in Europe. With only 13 games left, Leverkusen could win their first league title ever, a feat on par with Leicester's historic win a few years ago. Furthermore, we reckon it's going to be an even bigger milestone than the Foxes’ triumph and let us tell you why.
    Unlike in the Premier League where there has been instability over the years as to who wins the league, the Bundesliga has been dominated by Bayern, having won 11 titles in a row before this season. The last time the Bavarians failed to lift the league title was back in 2012 when Dortmund still had Klopp. This monotony makes it almost impossible for new teams to break through as Bayern tends to dip into the market and buy all the good players in the league, strengthening themselves. Even in seasons where Bayern have faced multiple issues, they have still been able to pull out a league win which makes Leverkusen's meteoric rise so shocking.

And they won the league cup the year they were relegated. Im a die hard Lautern Fan and I live in the area, but this was not a typical promotional team. I'm a fan of Leverkusen since 1994. It's wonderful what is happening. But it can't be compared to Leicester because in those 30 years Leverkusen has been always placed in the upper half of the table except for 3 seasons. It had to eventually happen at one point. Whereas Leicester was a complete glitch in the natural order of the EPL.

      This right here. It's actually not a totally unexpected event, it's something hard earned through always being close to succeeding but never quite getting there. If you know the history and their standings in the league over the last 20 years, you'd say that its about time they win the league.

    As Much as I love Leverkusen , nothing is gonna top Leicester :
    - Leverkusen with their squad were projected to fight for European spots and they were almost on relegation and when Xabi Alonso took over , he made the European spots possible. Leverkusen is expected to fight for Top 4
    - Leicester on the other hand were predicted to be relegated or at most fight for relegation. Not only that but prior the season they kick out 3 key players for “disciplinary problems ” + their coach. And Claudio Raineri was introduce and “he has to take rejects” like Kante , Mahrez and other players that during the season they became World Class.
    - Not only that but Leicester compete with the “Top 6” which are Arsenal , Chelsea , United , City , Tottenham and Liverpool. They all spend a lot more than what Bayern does and to top it off , other teams like New Castle , West Ham , Wolves and a lot more teams are also super fierce and can do upsets
    - Leicester was one of the teams that spend the least during that transfer window on the Premier League , just as an example , the gambling ratio of Leicester winning was 5000 to 1. So pretty much you get 5000x more times the amount if you have bet for Leicester. Thats how low and miserable they look
    - Leciester on its history has never been able to even be Top 6. It was always for them keeping themselves at Premier League.
    - Leicester City Broke the Premier League in many ways , for a whooping 38 games they were consistent , they were dreaming , they were pushing beyond their limits and unlike “Greece” or “Denmark” that only had to play 6-7 games to be champions , they have to do it 38 games while playing The Top 6 + the other contenders x2

    Leicester had a market value ca 1/10 that of the biggest team in the laegue that year and the second lowest the season before their triumph. Leverkusen is a top 4 team in germany with half the market value than bayern going into the season. What Alonso is doing is incredible and talking from a coaches stand point it is one of the best and most impressive starts to a career. But I don't hink this flows into comparing the teams. Leicester winning the League is more comparable to Stuttgart winning it this year or Union Berlin winning it last year.
    I think it is fair to talk about budget but that only takes in what happened this season and over the past five years Leverkusen is the third biggest net spender in the Bundesliga behind only Bayern and Wolfsburg. Of course that is in the Bundesliga and only half of the league spent more than they brought in contrary to the prem where only brighton made more money on transfers than they spend. But by determining which win would be more surprising you have to take in the initial situation in the league and compare it. This season Leverkusen actually had a bigger net spent than bayern whilst leicester in the 5 years prior to their title are 6th in the premiere league and 7th the season of their title win.
    What speaks for Leverkusen is that they are winning the league against a top playing team. Altough Bayern are struggling comparably to what they want to achieve the current point average if kept until the end of the season would give them 80 points (90 if it was the prem and they had 38 games) which would be higher than in 5 out of the last 11 Bundesliga title winning seasons Bayern had. Leicester was the weakest champions of the last ten years counting from now and the second weakest in the ten years prior to their victory and they still won the league ten points clear of arsenal. Meaning: Leicester won because the competition was extrememly weak that year whilst Leverkusen might win it with fierce competition.
    However if you want to have something bigger than Leicesters win: Bundesliga winners Kaiserslautern 1998 in their first season back from the second division.

    Xabi Alonso surprised a lot of people when he became Bayer Leverkusen manager in October 2022. After a fruitful spell with Real Sociedad's second team, the Spanish coach made the jump to first-team management with a move to a club floating just above the Bundesliga relegation zone. It was unquestionably a high-risk gamble that Alonso made to get his first experience in the dugout at an elite side.
    Within half a year, having had the World Cup break to establish his playing style, the former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder had turned Leverkusen’s 2022/23 campaign around. The season could yet earn them a return to the Champions League, and they have also made good progress in this season's Europa League. It has been a sensational turnaround based on a number of key tactics that Alonso introduced when he became manager. Here, we take a deeper look at the five most impactful tactical changes behind Leverkusen’s improvement.

The seasons before they always placed high, somewhere 3-5ish. To say Leverkusen would be relegated after less than 1/4th of the matches just doesn't cover the whole truth.

    I would say that the Leicester Win would still be the bigger story. Leverkusen is established in the Bundesliga. Leicester wasn't. Leverkusen was a Top 6 Team for centuries. Leicester wasn't. The start of last season was a one time error and no one really thought they would actually struggle with relegation. Everyone knew they would get better again and they did. Their story last season is not that spectacular than the safe of Leicester in the season before they won the league. And even though Leicester invested more Money than Leverkusen the whole Prem invests more money than the Bundesliga. It is not the same competition.
    If Leverkusen wins the league (we still don't know, Dortmund once gave away a 9 points lead a few years back) it would still be a great story. I would rank it higher than Leicester if they secure atleast one more title. And I am pretty sure that is going to happen. I believe Leverkusen will win the league and the DFB-Pokal this year. And they could even win the "mini" triple if they win the Europa League. But I am not so sure they can manage to achieve that.

    3:51 Leverkusen is unable to be in financial trouble, because every loss they make is consolidated by the Bayer Company. They are even one of the richest clubs in Germany, since they don‘t have to follow the 50+1 rule.
    It is surprising how good they are this season, but it is far from being a cinderella story. Arsenals last season would be way more comparable (if they actually had finished the job)

    Bayer Leverkusen winning the Bundesliga would be a surprise considering they were at the relegation dog fight before Alonso came and they secured European football. However, it still pales to Leicester City winning the Premier League title. Leicester City that season when they won the Premier League title were favourites of relegation after barely surviving the previous campaign and yet Ranieri took a group of mostly championship standard players to unlikely triumph that can never ever be replicated again. Leipzig can close when they got promoted back in 16/17 but Leverkusen has good players already like Wirtz, Tapsoba, Hincapie, Schik, Amiri, Tah and Hradecky and they were joined by Hoffman, Xhaka, Grimaldo and Boniface. The only players Leicester City had that was good was Vardy, Mahrez, Kante and Schmeichel.

    @JP-je6jg Před 2 měsíci

    Leicester still, come on. Leverkusen have been a competitive bundesliga team all through the 21st century. Leicester spent more time in the championship and lower. Also, as experienced as Ranieri was...his appointment was not greeted with enthusiasm. An also, the top premier League teams still pick off the best players from around the premier League. Bundesliga has 1 big fish, the premier League has 4/5...(but sadly City always win the league ATM).

      There won't be a turning point in football. F.e. Many important Leverkusen players switch club in summer because big clubs gibe them more money and more prestige. Alonso is gonna go to Liverpool or Real. Leverkusen will reach Top 4 at it's best next season and Bayern will dominate again because they are am Elite club and always stays an elite club. Same with Girona etc.

    You said "The bundesliga is harder because there is one team that wins every time". I would say that makes it easier. You only need ONE team to be irregular a year for it to be "achievable". Leicester needed to be better than the whole big 6 for the whole season.

    • @JubaidRahman
      @JubaidRahman Před 2 měsíci

      Yes Leicester were better than the big 6 and they did achieve an incredible feat. We also actually have to agree that in 15-16 season, all top teams actually underperformed. Man City were 4th, Man Utd came 5th. Arsenal and Tottenham came 2nd and 3rd but were behind. Liverpool were in a rebuild and Chelsea had a disaster 10th finish. Leicester were too good that season and made best use out of underperforming top teams.

    Bigger than Leicester??? 😂 This is my 5 cent opinion from an international football fan. (Vietnam)
    3 year prior the wining PL season Leicester was still playing at Championship.
    Meanwhile Bayer has been a familiar face to me at Europa League and Champion League for more than a decade (since I started to be a football fan).
    Their top scorer, legendary striker Jamie Vardy at one point nearly have to drop football to be a labour worker, and he won PL and golden boot at 30.
    An enourmous achievement of course, but top Leicester PL season is a laughable opinion.
