I have been to Paulie Gees and can honestly say if you like Neapolitan pizza then its a 9.1. I eat all types of pizzas. I havent had their slice shop though.
Ya but a 9.1 in Neapolitan pizza is like a 7.5 in real pizza. Neapolitan pizza is like showing up to a race in a 57 Chevy. The world has evolved, get over it.
@@rich8381 It's a matter of what you like friend. I rate pizza relative to the classification. I don't try to compare deep dish to NYC or Neapolitan to Detroit style. Its just so different.
@@theHighlightR33L ya I couldn't agree more. My point is, there's only so much you can do with Neopolitan. Everything has a ceiling. It was easy good when times were tough. It's great but things evolve and people have a hard time dealing with that.
@@rich8381 well said , I have worked in 4 pizza shops and all the owners say the about the same thing about neopolitan pizza , just the basic white girl of pizza, one owner described it too me, not much you can personalize it for a unique finish , he also compared it too ordering a well done wagyu burger , just a waste of ingredients when you can get something better at the same price
@@hardanalljr.3138 great analogy! I must say though, we have this really good place where I'm from, about an hour south of Toronto. These guys are right off the boat from Italy. Their Neopolitan is off the charts compared to what we have here. Not to mention 99% of pizza here is strip mall discount thrice the slice crap with dipping sauce. I'm sorry, if you need ranch or garlic aioli packets to enjoy pizza than it sucked to begin with. As basic as Neopolitan pizza is, the one thing that sets it apart from regular slice shops is, the dough. You don't get food coma from Neopolitan pizza! All that shite discount pizza that comes off the press on a salamander oven blows up like a balloon after you eat it. We have really only 1 place in the city that is kick ass pizza. Total awesome cheese oozing sloppy football pizza, loaded with real ingredients, like actual bacon for example. it's been around for 70 yrs, but the funny thing is, people either live it or hate it. And the people that don't like it, I'll ask what do you like? You'll get answers like, Domino's, or some Ghetto discount pizza. Up here that's the equivalent of your New York Dollar slice. So having said all of that rant. As much as Neopolitan has a low ceiling, when done properly it's better than 99% of the standard crap out there. But it's the 1% of pizza places, like the Lucali's, Difarra's, Sally's, John's of Bleeker, The cool Chicago and Detroit style places and all those little mom and pop shops that seperate from the crowd. Davey Boy has made me into a bit of a pizza connoisseur. I was thinking of opening a place, but the reality is, I've learned that 99% of the People have never had great pizza, so they'd rather stick to their Kraft Dinner pizza, because they've had that ingrained from a young age. We live in a society, at least from where I'm from. Where people go into a Chinese food restaurant and ask if they have a hamburger on the menu.

Prez needs to do a blind taste test sometime. Give him some of his highest rated vs some lower ones without knowing where they came from and rate 'em. Would be a little difficult with pizza temps though.

Paulie Gee's is a fantastic pizza spot, but what keeps me coming back is their pumpkin bisque in the fall/winter. Next level soup game.

Here is my memory of paulie Gees
I was living in Greenpoint and I met a girl on the street walking 2 goats. There was a farm on one of the rooftops a few blocks away, where the goats lived with chickens and they grew all sorts of vegetables. After speaking with the girl for a few minutes, she gave me a couple of fresh eggs from the chickens.
That afternoon I walked down to Paulie Gees and I told them to make me a pie using the eggs. They put prosciutto, cheese and the 2 eggs in the middle sunnyside up. It is still one of the best pies I ever had and will always be a memory of my time living in Greenpoint BK.

Dave, back in the day I always rated pizza the next morning after a kegger when it was sitting on the coffee table and you had to move cigarette butts to the side and wash it down with last night's beer. During the party drinking and eating with friends was the most important thing but next morning told the truth about the Apizza !

Also, Grandma slices are supposed to have a more "garlic edge" to the sauce. Sicilian sauce supposed to be on the sweeter side. The slice in the vid looks more like sauce on top of the cheese. I forgot what pizzerias in the Brooklyn area call that...upside down slice maybe?
it's an upsidedown sicilian crafted after the famous L&B Spumoni Gardens upsidedown pie.
There are 3 pizza shops i really liked in canarsie brooklyn the 1st one is right next to the L station they have the best scicilian / square, i dont know if they are still there its called armandos i dont recall the name back then in the 90s . The 2nd is on farragut rd and the 3rd is on Ave L now dont remember the name then but its called Original Pizza.

I don’t get it, when you think of tomato pies you think of Trenton tomato pies (which is basically the Trenton/S Jersey version of pizza) which Dave has reviewed plenty of and which are usually served hot. Is there like a separate NYC version of a tomato pie that’s cold, and why?
