This is great! I was lucky enough to be able to watch some of this being filmed- as a kid, we lived on a houseboat in Sausalito. The scene on the twisty road where the two cars pass a red station wagon, that wagon was my mom's car. We watched as the tanker truck flipped- that wasn't scripted. I'd nearly forgotten this existed!

It wasn't better. It was different. People had issues too. The only difference is that people were oblivious to these issues. It wasn't the magical time people who weren't alive imagine that time period to be. And maybe you'd heard it was wonderful, but people tend to be idealistic about the time when they were kids or young adults. It was just different, and everything took a lot more time to do and you couldn't use Google to get a simple fact. You had to do extensive research and go to the library or make many phone calls. Same for the 80s and 90s.

They were cheaply made and very slow in fact and the handling was inexistant. I had one monté carlo similar to this one. The 2 things they were very good at were burning gasoline and rusting. Same thing for the ltd. I certainly don't miss them. Only people who didn't drive them are nostalgic for these smog mobiles. They stopped being good around 1972, and if you lived in a place where you had a lot of snow, they rusted away after a few years.

Folks clammering on about how these old land yatchs were so great seem to be forgetting that this is a movie. They destroyed many identical cars to film these scenes. There are no "magically self fixing" cars, but there were multiple copies.
Power from these things was shit, mileage was shit, safety was shit, handling was beyond shit, reliability was an afterthought.
That they were quite comfy and would haul a lot of stuff is about all they really had going for them.
Mid '70s to mid '80s cars were the worst.

They must have boosted the engine in that monte carlo because these models were very slow. I was unfortunate enough to have one, I paid 200$ for it at the time. They were just enormous cars with no handling and no power. Same for the ltd. In the early 90s, those who didn't rusted to nothing were almost given away because people knew they were crappy cars. The only thing they were very good at was burning gasoline and rusting. I don't miss them a bit. Only people who didn't drove these are nostalgic of these.
