I think the main problem for Haaland was that he didn't show up in any of the semi-finals or finals he played. That I think made it difficult for him to compete since Messi was Man of the Match in every round in the biggest tournament, and Player of the Tournament. Which again Haaland wasn't in UCL. it was Rodri.
In those big games Haaland barely eve touched the ball and I’ve never seen that from a Ballon Dor contender in a high profile game. I think he’s a world class striker who’s a goalscoring machine and as important as goals are in the game I’m pretty sure there’s an award for being a consistent goalscorer which is the Golden Boot and while he scored 52 goals last season it’s not just his big game performances not showing up when it matters the most a striker’s job is to score goals but that’s not the only metric people should look at when talking about the best player in the world there’s a massive difference between the best player and the best striker in the world in my opinion.

Erling Haaland’s 2022/23 season was unbelievable. 52 goals 36 of them in the premier league breaking the scoring record, 12 of them in the champions league and it’s not just the amount of goals he scored last season that made him stood out he had a massive impact on Manchester City winning the treble as he was the missing piece for the champions league a clinical number 9 and he helped them get over the finish line. Because of his goalscoring consistency throughout the season domestically and in Europe, he won the Premier League Golden Boot, the European Golden Shoe and the Champions League Golden Boot because he just couldn’t stop scoring last season and he’s also a worthy winner of the Ballon Dor and if he wins it well deserved as well.
I mentioned how he scored 52 goals broke a scoring record and won scoring titles in the premier league and the champions league and yet he still won’t win the Ballon dor and context is the most critical aspect before criticizing this award. The reason why I don’t think they’ll give Erling Haaland the Ballon Dor despite the incredible season he had and the amount of goals he scored throughout the year is because when determining the best player in the world we have to remember that goals aren’t the only metric people should look at as like I said there’s a reason why they give the Golden Boot. There’s a difference between the best striker and the best player in the world. The best striker in the world is someone who’s a specialist in their role which is scoring goals and the best player in the world is a player who’s elite in other aspects of their game and also score goals dribbling creating chances work rate passing etc. This happened to Robert Lewandowksi in 2021 he scored 69 goals in the calendar year and broke a scoring record in the Bundesliga with 41 goals but didn’t win the Ballon dor due to his lack of trophies other than a league title and it was a great example on how being the best striker in the world doesn’t mean you were the best player in the world. While his goals fired Manchester City to the treble I felt like there were a lot of games where he was simply non existent for his team and in some of these semifinals and finals not only did he not score or assist he barely even touched the ball and that was a common theme for him throughout the season. At times he wasn’t even the best player on Manchester City last season as he did finish as the top scorer in the champions league but Rodri won champions league player of the season because of his consistency and big game performances throughout the competition and season and also Kevin De Bruyne showed up when it mattered the most and at times was more important to Man City than Haaland. There are little details as to why he won’t win the award this season and people have to understand that as important as goalscoring is in football as that’s a skill that many top strikers master so well there are more metrics to just goals when talking about these individual awards and the best in the world.

I won't agree on the Benzema case. If Messi won any significant trophy apart from Ligue 1 or Ronaldo won PL Benzema wouldn't have won it. Bias from these 2 players affects a lot.
Until it is understood what the definition of the best player is, it will always be controversial (maybe on purpose). Is it the best player that year statistically? Best player playing the sport regardless of stats? Best story? Because if we are looking at stats objectively and taking into consideration how strength of opponents, it’s really not a question and Haaland should win it. If it’s about who the best player is playing the sport regardless of anything else or the who is the famous player with the best storyline that year, then you give it to Messi. The thing is, that’s not the consistent criteria going back so if no one knows what the criteria is for a year, then it’s a dumb award.
Haaland wasn't the best player statistically, Messi dominated in every other statistic over Haaland except for goals and the Balon D'or is looking at the overall best player not best goal scorer. Plus going by rating, Messi was ranked number 1 where as Haaland wasn't even top 10, KDB was the 2nd highest rated. Messi had the most MOTM last season. Both Messi and Haaland have the same amount of trophies won, but Messi has the trophy that carries more weight. Although Haaland played more games than Messi this season he still ended up having 1 G/A less than Messi. Messi won the most MOTM in the world cup and was the awarded with the best player while being the highest rated player, you can't say the same thing for Haaland in the UCL, he got none of that, all he did was score goals, and they'll reward him with the golden boot for it.

1. Messi's not playing on the top level anymore. He's in the MLS, Haaland who's his one and let's be honest only rival is playing in the premier league, the toughest league in the world by a mile.
2. The ballon d'or is given for 22/23 season, not for any individual tournament(you have POTT for that), not for any period of this season, for the ENTIRE season. Over the course of the entire season, Haaland has been consistently good, he scored 50+ goals in all competitions, won the treble becoming the last remaining piece of the puzzle for Man City's first champions league. Messi was good throughout 7 games of the World Cup, other than that PSG came second in their group and was humilitated by Bayern Munich in the round of 16, after that Messi left to MLS and that's it. Based on the individual performance throughout the season Haaland was better, there can be zero argument agaisnt it.
3. There has been so many instances where Messi and Ronaldo robbed so many good players of their well deserved Ballon d'ors because of their popularity. Lewandowski, Van Djik, Ribery(I'm frankly amazed that Modric won it in 2018). If even the treble and 50 goals in a season can't get you the ballon d'or over Messi, than it's just a freaking popularity contest. Not an award to the best football player over the course of the season.
