My stepdaughter just became a police officer in Berlin, Germany. I am beyond proud of her. Her training took 3 years. She studied besides regular Police training, which is required here. They were taught law. So now she has a Bachelor degree in law AND is police. They were taught cultural differences, also in laws. They were taught typical biases everybody has...on the police and on suspects. In Berlin we have gangs and they have fire arms...just like in the states. We habe illegal prostitution, massive drug abuse, trafficing and so on and so forth. Just like in the states.
    There are differences though...
My stepdaughter has to take debating classes. She had to take de-escalation classes. Situational training. Classes on mental illness.
And really only little fire arm training. Her first year in school, she didn't even touch a gun.
The way i see it, over here, police are prepared to understand situations and deescalte them...without hurting anybody or getting hurt.

There are 5 simple solutions to drastically reduce police brutality.
-Police academy must be at list 2 years with a major focus on de-escalation, community building and conflict resolution.
-Only college graduates can be recruited.
-Increase police salaries (yeah I said it!)
-Payment for proven brutality claims and wrongful deaths must be taken from the collective police pension fund of the entire state!
-End the police union. Public servants shouldn't have unions.

Great book on implicit bias: "Biased" by Jennifer L. Eberhardt, PhD. This book didn't come up on a lot of last year's reading lists, but it should have. Eberhardt is a neurologist who uses brain scan experiments to study implicit bias. This combined with powerful personal stories prove that bias is a real thing, and how training police helps overcome implicit bias in real life situations.

My first husband (now deceased) took all the tests (mental, emotional and physical) to be a cop. He admired and respected them. He passed physical tests easily, barely passed emotional and psychological testing. They convinced him to see therapist. Years later he was emotionally ready, but too old physically. I think this proves that most people need time to gain the wisdom a cop needs. Bias and anger are much more in control with age and experience.

In Germany, becoming a police officer requires 3.5 years of study at the academy (more like a university). We have 3 tiers of high schools, depending on your performance during middle school. Only graduates from the highest tier "Gymnasium" (yes, like the gym), are eligible for application, should their GPA permit it.
You spend 6 months out of those 3.5 years on active ride-alongs to gather some experience.
I think US cops would use a lot less force if they were taught 3.5 years of conflict de-escalation.

I like Chief Koval not because his training that he started 6 years ago ended up not holding up 6 months ago but rather because he’s at least trying to amend the issue. Many other chiefs deny it exists and hide their head in the sand.

Are _all_ cops biased? Every single _one?_ No. But the overwhelming _majority?_ Yes. So it _absolutely_ makes sense for law-enforcement personnel to go to work, every day, aware of this fact about themselves.

    • @Nejove
      @Nejove Před 3 lety +2

I'd argue that not only are ALL cops biased, but EVERY human being is biased, cop or not. Biases are not always about race and are often unconscious, but they're pretty much inevitable. However, acting on them is not. When biases are as harmful as the ones many police have about people of color, it becomes important to recognize they exist and strive not to act on them.
