I like how TFL actually takes the vehicles offroad, unlike alot of other car review channels that just drive them on a perfectly maintained dirt road and call that offroading
who says Mitsubishi is dead? ;) i mean the Outlander is no Evo but this is a beast offroad and very reliable
I traded in my 2 door wrangler for an Outlander V6. I miss the wrangler daily but life happens. With 8 year old twins, the Wrangler was getting too cramped and I couldn't justify dropping nearly $40k on a 4 door wrangler with the options I wanted. The outlander has a kid sized third row, great AWD system, modern tech (adaptive cruise, android auto, led headlamps, around view camera, top safety scores, etc) and the price was thousands cheaper than similar vehicles (I didn't pay anywhere near sticker). I couldn't be happier. So far it's been flawless. Best of all, it's unique. I rarely see myself on the road, which was part of the appeal for me. I'll probably go back to a wrangler when the kids are grown, but for now I'm enjoying the soccer dad Outlander. I know they're not for everyone and there are plenty of mitsubishi haters out there, but my experience has been very positive thus far. If you're in the market, I'd suggest at least giving them a look.
pasta1298 Yeah, it seems that there’s a lot of hate for Mitsubishi. Yes, I know they stopped building sport cars but at the end of the day, the Lancer Evo is a niche car, just like the STI for Subaru. I mean, how many foresters are there on the road for every STI? I think Mitsubishi is doing the smart thing by focusing on what they’re good at, gaining revenue, and then can spend it on those “fun” cars again.
I agree 100% with you that the AWC system is great. 3.0 V6 and transmission are smooth as well. I like that it’s not too quiet either; it’s nice to hear some noise when I’m on the gas.
Brandon Ly Some time ago I wanted an SUV which was good and different from all the other SUV's you see out there. So I bought an Isuzu Axiom. I liked it and drove it for a while, however, the company stopped selling non-commercial vehicles in the US, and all its dealerships closed. I ended up trading it in and, again, for something looking different on the road - Suzuki XL7. I liked that vehicle, and it served me and my family well, but we all know what happened to Suzuki of America. Last year I was looking for a new car and was seriously considering an Outlander, but, at the end, I decided to go with something else. Based on what happened to those Japanese companies, Isuzu and Suzuki, with their small car market shares in the US I am convinced that Mitsubishi is still selling cars in America only because I did not buy one from them last year.
Haha. Luckily it seems like Mitsubishi is doing a decent job of growing it's market share. Where I live, I've been seeing a consistent increase in Mitsu vehicles as years pass. Maybe you should buy one and see if they go away! haha.
Thanks m8. Very informative as I've been considering one of the 2. Well, add RAV4 to the list as well. Still no decision.
@@unitedwestand56 AFAIK Mitsu joined Renault - Nissan alliance.
Ah.. Mitsubishi's AWC system, built and perfected on the Dakar Rally and World Rally Championship. It doing well offroad didn't surprised me
We replaced our 2007 Honda Pilot w a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander. We also currently own a 2014 Accord Sport. Prior to the Pilot we also owned a 2003 CRV. Long story short - we used to be a Honda Only family. My cousin and neighbor told me how happy they were with their Outlander. Don't rely on the professional reviews. Drive it for yourself. We are very pleased with the 2018 Outlander. Great sound system and a lot softer ride than the CRV.
I got the V6 outlander GT it seems the leather interior is as bit as nice as a honda pilot, drinks about the same amount of gas as the pilot but cost a lot less to buy one and has a 10 year warranty, couldn't beat it.
The AWD system on the Mitsubishi is great.
And they are reliable as an anvil and have a great warranty as well.
No real downside.
Team Outlander. Better AWD system. Better MPG. No expensive turbo to fail later. Better predicted reliability. Better warranty. Thousands cheaper at real-world prices.
palebeachbum idk where you're getting your numbers from but vw and mitsu are ranked the same for dependability, turbos aren't a problem in this day and age, and as far as a dealer network, mitsu is struggling
D Jay T I was comparing model to model, not brand to brand. Outlander has very good consumer reviews. A naturally aspirated 4 cylinder has fewer parts than a turbocharged variant and therefore should be more reliable long-term.
palebeachbum I was stunned when I walked out at the dealership and purchased our 2018 Outlander ES for only $22k with AWD. this includes tax, title, everything. Brand spanking new.
palebeachbum yea model to models tiguan outguns the mitsubishi sorry u burst your bubble but the tiguan is a better suv if u really in the market to buy an suv
Thank you for giving Mitsubishi some attention. So few reviewers do and ai don’t get it. Mitsubishis AWC is an awesome system we have it in our 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport GT and it is so strong when in LOCK it is unreal. Great little SUV that can handle its self off-road. Love these Outlanders as well!!!
i like outlander v6 3l
Mitsu outlander gt v6 i think is sportier? s-awc based on the evo system..
My second Outlander which is a 2017 GT. Earlier in the year, I was at a shooting range with a steep dirt hill to get out. It rained while there and the slope turned to dirt/mud. Figured I'd try before calling a friend with his tractor, put it Lock and took me right out. Very impressed.
Mitsu is soooo underrated! And the AWC is by far the best AWD system in this segment. I own both of these vehicles currently (2019 Outlander SE AWD & 2020 Tiguan SE R-Line Black 4motion and the AWD on the outlander is 100x better than that of the Tiguan. If only Mitsu would invest more money on the interior.
They did this year thanks to Nissan
I think Mitsubishi extremely better although it's less power than VW and even its CVT transmission is sophisticated enough to provide Mitsubishi vehicle good and comfort ride
I was actually suprised by how well the Mitsubishi done. When I heard CVT and no real power I expected it to really struggle. But yet it seemed to have less trouble than the VW.
T Ritchie that 166hp is surprisingly quicker on short bursts than a 194hp Accord Sport. I own both vehicles. my 2018 Outlander has definitely surprised us. very happy with this car.
Theoretically CVT should work the best since it isn't clutching up obstacles. Not sure what happens in real life...
I had the older Outie... loved it even if it wasn’t as capable as my Freelander 2 . I really would love the Outlander in a diesel and 8speed auto or cvt.
@@JohnSmith-wx9wj wrong it prevents the system from spinning due to stress on the cvt which is shit in any car. Look at the subaru performance up the gold mine a disaster. Yet the highlander they did not push like these two cars nor the honda pilot. I feel that the highlanders system is very good. Has taken me through thick mud 16 inch snow and offroading where most crossovers would not go but never struggled a bit like it did in this review. I have taken it on worse than gold mine obstacles without any issues. So anyways altrac tires, which I will be getting soon, and the highlander will go anywhere the 4 runner does except rock crawling. Which I would not do with any car or truck. Walking is 2-4x faster. Whats the point? Short distance sure but not for miles. Nonsense
@@mjfamgo6563 I was supposing in a world where CVT's are durable. Obviously since computers zealously protecting these transmissions they are not now.
10 months and 7000 miles later - my 2018 Outlander AWD survived the arctic cold here in Chicago, trudged thru unpaved snow packed alleys, unshovelled suburban roads, and swam thru deep puddles of melted snow. So far still the Best decision made and it didn't break the bank at $21k for an AWD. After reading the troubles of the new CRV turbo engines, really glad we didn't get the CRV.
If you want the best awd system on earth and reliability get the Mitsubishi, if you want something else get the VW.
How about the Outlander GT with the 3.0 v6? Is that a better comparison against the turbo Tiguan? Is the suspension on the GT too highway oriented though?
I enjoy my Outlander PHEV!
1.18inch lift on Monday.
225/75r16 AT Yokohamas already installed.
Very good job with S-AWC within 2020/21 models.
I have the Mitsubishi outlander 2017 S-AWD automatic diesel turbo, its freaking awsome!
I been using Mitsubishi outlander 09 and I must say it is reliable car, I have reason for it, I have only changed breaks, battery and tires, everything originally japan parts...if something go wrong it can fix, less expensive..I shouldn't demand more for this car. Buy low miles used under 20k , I trust engine, transmission and motor, it will last long easily with gentle and regular maintenance. Simple car no headache...
The outlander by far has a better awd system
The Mitsubishi Outlander is a much better vehicle hands down I have a 2019 and it runs circles in the snow over most other suvs also fantastic in the mud I would recommend everyone to buy one!
I worked with vehicles over 25 years and Mitsubishi is so underrated and just because it’s less advertised few people think of getting one but most all people that own one would recommend one and would buy another one !
I’m very pleased with my 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL. It gives me good MPG city and HWY and it’s also great to drive in the winter through snow. By the way I highly recommended the Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires. You can get a gear deal here in NY at a Mavis tire dealer.
Again, another great off-road review! Wonder how you would feel testing the Outlander GT with the V6 engine and 6-speed automatic instead! Would love for you guys to test that version of the Outlander out!
I will take an outlander gt 3.0l over the tiguan still.
The PHEV is coming, it's regarded as a better off roader where it's sold. And it does 25 electric miles.
Request to put the PHEV Outlander through stage 2.
Wish you woulda done the outlander on the third obstacle. Everyman Driver really showcased the capability. But enjoyed the video.
I got the KO2 LT tires 16 inch for my Outlander 2016 AWC (4 cyl CVT) and I can't wait to install them and test the Outlander off road this fall. I don't want to ruin the 18 inch street Toyo tires that came with it... On the sad side, the dealership will be replacing my CVT because the software update (during the recall phase) could not remove the shudder or hesitations at some speeds/rpms changes. Oh well, at about 36000KM (22400 Miles) I will get a new transmission... I am in Canada.
"Certain awd vehicles do not make up that with out me trying 3 or 4 times." Because on some you take the far left which is hard even for a truck and some you take the far right which almost any suv can get up. The pilot and highlander had to take the far left track, you directly turn both of the cars to the right to go around where you got the pilot stuck.
Nice hat, Nathan! :) Good comparison, even working solo. Not a fan of the Mitsu's styling, but it did do pretty well. If I lived in CO I would gladly bring my 2015 Subaru Crosstrek out for you guys, but I'm in OH and can't take a week+ off work.
Great test, great review! Can you take 2019 RAV4 Hybrid through this trail?
Are you gonna do more comparisons between these 2??
Mitsubishi is always winning like my new pajero sport 2017 not even the ford everest 3.2 can fight my suv.
With so much Overlanding in NA I am surprised Mitsu doesn`t offer the Delica D:5. The space inside is massive. It is reasonably well made, has a decent AWD system as well.
Nathan, When You drove the Tiguan. Did You use the off road setting?
Nathan! Please do a comparison of this 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander and your Mitsubishi Outlander, especially the all wheel drive system. I am curious to know how improved the system is.
it was crashed
Nicolas Balcazar de Wasseige where did you hear that?
Sitting here watching TFL car and remembering Nathan saying to wait for the Dodge Dart. Then I waited for the Jeep Renegade and it's snowing crazy in Vancouver. And I am totally fine ;9
Would TFL do a comparison between the 4 and 6 cylinder Outlanders off road to prove it's worth?
When are you taking the 2018 Subaru Crosstreck up Gold mine hill?
Got a video on the Outlander Sport?
Idk...having just these 2 stages on gold mine just doesnt seem enough. Would be nice to have a more longer test course?
i take the mitsubishi outlander over the VW anyday, better offroader and more reliable as well.
Me too hands down....
Same here I'ma buy one hands down
Are you gonna take the new Traverse up Gold mine Hill?
Mitsubishi is extremely underrated in this aspect. Although, their little 4 banger is a little underpowered.
Good review. Though if you want sporty you really should consider a golf GTI.
Would you try CR-V 2018?
Outlander
The Outlander has a very goid all wheel system. In my last five years havind the Outback and it made me look stupid because of the CVT in it was BAD, forward is fine but noted "please don't try the reverse in up hill back up in sand or mud, it will make you call for help." But the Outlander surprised me that it has no problems at all and its CVT combine all wheel drive system work as traditional auto transmission. It is best time to take advantage of the Mit since they are not selling well and dealers are willing to slash the price and the car is quite realible and safe.
I bought my Mitsubishi from a dealer that sold both Kia and Mitsubishi. There is an orientation that everyone who got the lifetime oil changes had to attend. At one point the maintenance manager let it slip that they'll never see any of the Mitsubishi guys because their cars never break. It's sort of cause a stir amongst the Kia customers and the dealership manager didn't look pleased with the maintenance manager. I still have my old eclipse, all I've done is change the oil every 5000 miles and it is still running like a champ. It's mileage is about 170, 000.
Mitsubishi is so underrated in terms of reliability and value.
Nice review ! Could you try gold mine hill with the Oultander PHEV?
Just to know if it has the same capabilities as the combustion one :)
Id like to see the comparison between the PHEV and ICE as well please
Right ! It would be interesting to see how two diferents powertrains does in gold mine hill XD
Yes please take a Mitsi PHEV up your goldmine mountain.
I have PHEV but keep a old V8 range rover on Bf K2 AT's for serious hard work. ( plan to fit Bf K2 At to PHEV before the bad winter weather hits)
BF's make 4x4 driving sooooooo much better!!!
Keep up your enjoyable challenges / channel
Mitsubishi Outlander
I been looking deeply into both of these cars and idk which one to choose...
I would like to see the phev off-road with you guys.
I drove all outlander it's a nice car but the interior quality and style looks very old and cheap
Is this the sel or GT?
They actually only called it the Outlander Sport in the U.S. It's called the RVR everywhere else including Canada. Not a great name but it's a throwback to an old model. But they thought a simpler name was better for the U.S. market since no one knows or cares about old Mitsubishis. North Americans couldn't recognize quality engineering even if it came with a 10 year warranty! 😂😂😂
I have the 2017...was worried cuz of reviews....best car decision ever.....could not have been better value.....sooooooooooo under rated....which is good, they remain affordable...
I have the same Outlander, the 2016 version though, AWC as well. The only thing I don't like about it is the handling, on the highway it feels as if it is not stable and off road it does not feel composed. This is how the electric steering system is tuned but it is very artificial, numb and soft and non linear or precise. I wish they had worked more on the handling experience so it feels like the Subarus handling...
I do agree with you on that. I have a 2017 SE trim model with S-AWC. The steering is not very precise. I did notice on the interstate @70 miles speed. I have to constantly correct it.
I feel the Outlander performed better than the Tiguan.
Where is the grey CR-V? In the last couple gold mine hill episodes there was a grey cr-v chilling at the base of obstacle 3.
Thank you for the review but I already knew the Mitsubishi would have killed it on gold Mine Hill with it s excellent S-AWC!!!
Mitsubishi is alive and well glad to know that quite a few people here are giving props to Mitsubishi...And yes every car manufacturer goes through a slump. BUT Mitsu is back on its way up!!! And a lot of these reviewers always fail compliment Mitsubishi on there BRILLIANT racing heritage and there Excellent 4 x 4 and and S-AWC system! Talking about about Dakar Rally(formerly Paris to Dakar Rally) and the World Rally Circuit. The Montero/Pajero Winning the Dakar Rally 12 times with its brilliant 4 x 4 system--Not toyota, not Mercedes, not Land Rover not Honda(is no where to be found in dakar) when Montero/Pajero was King of Dakar!! and the Evo has won its fair share world rally championships as well impressive record! Oh Yes and excellent RELIABILITY!! I have owned 5 Mitsubishi s, A Tredia, 1994 Montero, Galant, 2001 Montero and an 2016 Outlander these have been driven up to 150000-- to 250000 the the big boy Monteros with excellent reliability regular oil changes and maintenance (people always talking about Honda, toyota reliability blah blah they have there reliability issues too no car manufacturer is perfect. Looking forward to the New Mitsu Outlander 2022 and the unvailing of the new model on February 16 2021 its going to be massive!
My F20 which I had in AU went over everything and seemed unstoppable. But on tarmac max 80-90k, after that very uncomfortable.
Does anyone make a lift kit for a Tiguan?
Nathan use ur claws for awd
Love my 2018 Tiguan. Just got it this week.
But isn’t the Mitsubishi CVT Experimentally better with its AWC off-road than, the Subaru? Due to the flagship Montero/Pajero model Range. I see this video that the outlander went in better, than in some of the Subaru Outback videos. It’s getting quite odd a bit there.....
Too bad you didn't take the old Tiguan up stage 3 due to conditions since that bumper has a better approach angle
Take an alltrack up gold mine hill
From a Vw owner, don’t waste your time. Complete junk. No matter what the check engine light is permanently on because of stupid electrical issues. If it worked properly it would actually be a nice car, but this is by far the most frustrating and costly mistake I e made
which VW and which engine? I have driven the same 2 Passats for the last 3 years and have never had an issue nor seen a check engine light.
I have the Tdi Touareg. And I just had some of my emissions issues fixed on this car at a cost of $6k all covered under the extended warranty as a result of diesel gate. Needless to say I’m not happy with this thing at all.
There's your problem. They had to really mess with the electronics after diesel gate to remove the software that cheated the system and then put in one that met regulations. In the end it caused everything to be a bit unstable. Have 2 friends with TDI's that are less than 4 years and both have electrical problems.
Touareg is a notoriously unreliable vehicle. It's a model that's been around for many years and it's always been considered overpriced junk.
Thanks for the input. But maybe you should've done more research on something before dropping thousands of dollars on a piece of shit. I'm sure you fell in love with the new car smell and got sold by the salesman. There's this thing called internet and google to look up reliability on cars. Cheers.
When ever you tell a noncar person about Volkswagen, they just think of little old school looking cars.
The GT is miles ahead of the v4 in off-road capability because it has an more advanced AWD and higher horsepower. CVT isn't good for off-road.
I chipped my outkander GT and im getting 30 mpg.
The base 4 wheel drive is crap on the Mitsubishi. Get the SEL WITH the AWD upgrade or go with the GT. GT is best because the transmission is 6 speed instead of sucky CVT. I take my GT mudding and off-road in the snow and it champs right through.
Unless you got the AWD option on the SEL you do not have the advanced system youre referring to in this video. Turbo doesn't help you in offroad... Turbo helps you get on the highway.... The V6 would destroy the turbo.
With dark (or white) paint, LED headlamps and nice rims Tiguan actually looks pretty decent.
sic22l that’s what I have. Black on Black. Every one loves it
I'm getting a 2020 tiguan 4motion. 2 of them. It comes with 7.9 ground clearance with 17 inch rims. I have a 2017 tiguan with 6.9 ground clearance with 16 inch rims. I live in an area that can easily get 2ft of snow in a 48 hour period. The mix of compacted snow and powdery snow. About 4 times the condition i would get would bottom my 2017 tiguan out in the powder and compacted snow. Not by much. Would going for 10inches of ground clearance in my 2020 vw tiguan be safe and how would I go for 10 inches of ground clearance? I am figuring 3.1 inches of more clearance from my 2017 to a lifted 2020 would make all the difference. Would I lift and increase tire size? Or just lift?
Would getting larger tires also increase amount of tread touching ground at any given time?
outlander definitely has a more agressive front end, but the wheels are just too small, its not proportional
Yes, the Outlander's 18" wheels are too small. The VW's 17" wheels are better. Because they are German.
It seems the outlander is an underrated car. I'll admit in some aspects its kinda cheesy especially the stereo is sometimes a buggy PITA. I used to have the 4cyl and realized how much better having the V6 is, a lot more power no CVT and it can tow. I have the V6 GT version and its truly a great car. I picked up some 16" rims and bfg tires its been great. I have never been stuck in my outlander and have gone on roads more questionable than seen in this video. I scared the wife before I ever got the chance to be stuck lol.
why the 2.4 4cyl again come on try with v6 S-AWS
Drag race please! !
Milena Smith ??
Of car.. the 4wd system is based on the OG Evo10 :) Although the cvt is bad jojo
I wonder how the V6 Outlander with the 6 speed auto will do compared to the 4 cylinder.
A lot better, lower rev range and has a regular automatic transmission, more pulling power etc etc. acts more like an old school Montero.
You guys should take an ATV up Gold Mine Hill. Probably pointless, though.
We watch this channel is because we hope you guys can show us what are those SUV’s limits . If you guys are so scared to damage the car , and not try the limits (which I believe they probably will be doing ok on stage 3 ) what is the point of those video ?
The main issue in this video is the angle you took in the Tiguan it looks way harder than the angle in the Outlander.
Is there a reason why they sold this, Rather than the Pajero/Montero Sport, and the flagship Pajero/Montero model?
I love the real 4x4 design of the Pajero/Montero, & the Sport version.
And some models come with a V6 diesel or, Gasoline engine in east Asia, Europe, and japan. (I think)
Mitsubishi stopped Montero production in the United States. 2004 being the last production year. And they are extremely hard to come by.
It's a shame you didn't even try to put them on stage 3...
Not a fan of those halogen on the Tiguan
Looks like the Mitsubishi outperformed the Nissan lol. Put some offroad tires on that Outlander and there will be a clear winner.
2018 Chevy Traverse?
CVT? I thought it was sportronic
I don't get why people drive crossovers when they don't need awd or the ground clearance. The only reason I would buy one would be if I lived in a place where I often had to do light offroading but wanted a comfortable car on the road.
Yep, exactly. Have a long distance daily commute, relatives live on a hill with a long track including a creek crossing. You can get there fine in 2WD mostly but conditions change many times a year. A low car will certainly scrape.
More interior space
Does VW north america really put a cheap plastic steering wheel in the tiguan?? But, the 8 speed is nice. In my opinion better then the DSG
When comparing vehicles off road why not put the same tires on them? I bet if you put summer tires on a Jeep Wrangler rubicon and mud terrain tires on a Honda CR-V they would come out even.
Outlander is soooo fantastic 👏
I liké the outlander but the transmission drives me crazy
3rd challenge
I have both and in conford side Tiguan is better.
They should bring back the Montero that we see in every Pablo Escobar movies/shows.
you like sporty I like my car to work Mitsubishi all the way VW's are not fun when they break down I know I had to fix mine. most you'll likely have to do without warranty on mitsu is a god damn brake service because the design of the brake system on outlanders is terrible. only one with decent is eclipse cross with the same system as Toyota rav4
Mitsubishi Outlander 👍
turn on the offroad mode..pffff
8.5 ground clearance numb nuts
SUBARU please
I like Subaru as a company, but their cars are total shit for off-road I sold mine. I got tired of getting stuck.
