yeah, I agree Tom Selleck had a really good charisma about him. The show itself from the 80s is actually labeled as being campy but whatever it is they had a great way of delivering the lines and material without turning it into an overly silly pseudo comedy.

Selleck was cool with the reboot.. he really wanted a reunion with all the original actors. But Universal was not able to make it happen.
Uh no he wasn't lol. He said so in a few interviews he wasn't happy about it but told them to go ahead. That's not the same thing as being cool with it. He never wanted anything to do with it.

because his version was based on the Vietnam era, the reboot was in the Post 911 era. Selleck wanted to be remembered for his version only.
I watched one episode of the new Magnum and I didn't like it at all.I loved the original with Selleck,that one is impossible to beat.Some things should just stay in the past.
There can only be one..... that's Tom Selleck!!! And you just can't replace an actor as great as John Hillerman - the soul of this show. Not a Roger E. Mosley and a Larry Manetti. This quartet was unique in its own way. One for all, all for one. Loyal fans know that dynamic, and that's what made this show what it is. The reboot is just ridiculous and appeals to today's youth who don't even know the original!!! I checked it out but had to turn it off in horror. The reboot is really not mine.

All those 80s shows were magic,TV executives should know remakes of these don't work.people find it difficult if not impossible too identify with the new actors.The original actors own those parts they played and that's all there is too it .

There are some things better left alone and Magnum PI is one of them. Remaking a classic like Magnum PI is not possible not in its true sense especially with today's political mindset and Hollywood's warped sense of values. It would have been better to have left it to die with dignity!
Loved the original show. Watched a couple of the reboot shows when they first aired, and it just didn't have the magic of the original.

This is completely fine. I like that Tom Selleck is giving his opinions about the new show, but I think that Peter M. Lenkov did a great job with the show and he wanted it to stand out apart from the original and that has pretty much helped it find an audience! And it's been able to become successful for the creators. The Cagney and Lacey reboot that was cancelled by CBS in 2018 after going over the pilot was probably not going to be as successful if they couldn't find a way to keep things fresh while also still staying true to the charm of the original show! And that's why it probably wouldn't worked as well. And that's disappointing.
The new show could've been something that people including myself would've watched if they weren't just doing a cheap cash grab reboot. Should've been its own show with its own title. It may have lasted for a minute but it never reached the success nor adoration that the original enjoyed. You can't replace Tom Selleck and the other three guys and expect to outdo them or make us forget them. It wasn't gonna happen.
executive producer Peter Lenkov said the actor was “really supportive.” “I know in the past they've tried to do versions of [MAGNUM], and getting his blessing was very important - and we got that, so we're very lucky.”
I agree with Tom Selleck- the producers should've left Magnum P.I. alone. Keep in mind, back in 2012, he made it clear that rebooting The Rockford Files without either James Garner or Stephen J. Cannell being involved, would be wasted effort and should be left alone. They listened to Tom, back then, but they should've listened to him when he objected to rebooting Magnum P.I. Don Bellisario is mostly retired and Glen Larson passed away, good enough reason to leave it alone!!!
same with 5-0.....instead of making it serious like how Jack Lord was, including Danno and the rest of the team, their scriptwriting sucks!!! instead of car chases, they have bits of humor that really made 5--0 suck even more!!!

I've enjoyed both versions of Magnum PI as well as both versions of Quantum Leap. Sorry to see the revived versions cancelled.
Tom is the Magnum I grew up with. When they announced the new show and it didn't have him in it.... I instantly knew I'd never watch the new show. I didn't even give it a chance.
As soon as i watched the new show i loved it from the start, like many from our generation. We don't need to put down the original even tho we have no desire to watch it and we never will. So many negative people in this comments...

And if you think it is, i can tell you that you're not doing a great job in keeping up with our "generation".... "Back in my day", the actors were more mature. And played characters you could believe had years of experience under their belt. Most crime shows today have characters that look like they are 25 years old. Who go after people who are 25 years old for committing crimes against other 25-year-olds!

Sorry. Selleck is and always will be Magnum pi. His charm and looks and Johns Higgins was just as much the reason for the original shows success.
It'd be nice if you actually showed footage of him being interviewed and talking for himself, instead of the narrator talking for him.

I grew up in the 90s, born in 92. I watched the original magnum pi religiously and still watched it up until 2014. Then when they released the new one I gave it a chance but holy F it’s horrible. NOTHING like the original. Tacky in the worst way

I watched the first episode and thought I was going to throw up. It was an insult to the original. Might I suggest that the Network do a Made for TV movie before all the characters get too old and die off.
I dont watch the reboot but my Dad does and the fact that apparently they hooked up Magnum and Higgins makes me sick to my stomach 😫 i knew that the only reason they made Higgins a blonde eye candy is to do a cheap romance that they can do the tired will they/won't they trope. They really should've looked at how brilliant Elementary did with Holmes and Watson. Now those folks respected the history of that friendship and who those two characters were. Lucy Liu's Joan Watson wasn't there to be a love interest or a prop for political agenda. She was a fully realized character with her own journey and a refreshing relationship with Jonny Miller's Holmes. I can see why Tom didnt want anything to do with the reboot they have zero respect for the original and for what made it special.
Making Starbuck a woman in the Battlestar Galactica wasn't a good idea either. They might as well have put a dress on Templeton "Face" Peck for the A-team.🤮
I would never ever watch the new version
It’s not like Tom came out here and said horrible things or anything. All he really said was it’s not how he would have done it. It does seem like the reason the original show went off the air was because of the schedule for Tom. He never said that he was tired of the show and he was just tired of eight years of the schedule of the show.
That being said, I do feel like Tom always wanted him in the original cast to come back to it one day based off interviews and he has done in the years since the show ended. I really think if he would’ve just taken two or three years off, he would’ve been more than happy to go back to the show. At some point in the early 90s like somewhere between 1990 and 1992 I believe, they were talking about doing a Magnum PI movie, starring the original cast in Tom Selleck, went down with the person who wanted to direct the movie to pitch it to the studios. Originally everyone really like the idea but then something happened and it got put on hold and then shortly after that, it was dropped. Then again 10 or 15 years later sometime after the year 2000 there was more talk about may be either bringing the show back or another film and Tom Selleck was really interested in this because he would like to take a look at the characters on how they would be as older versions of themselves. He always seem to like the idea of visiting the original cast. Once they were older, and seen where life had took all of them, but it never happened.
Unfortunately, now, with the actors that played TC and Higgins have passed away, which really sad is that the actor that played TC just did pass away not that long ago from complications to a car accident he was in. But I don’t think without the four main cast members we have any shot of this ever happening and honestly without them. Sure we’d all love to see Magnum and Rick but we would be sitting there missing TC and Higgins the whole time.
Nice comment, thanks for all the updates through the years as they are hard to keep up with! I still watch Magnum PI daily (the original) have never given the new one a chance, so no real opinion there. I am glad ppl enjoy it but i am old and set in my ways and still enjoy the original lol. My Dad is quickly declining with dementia so watching Magnum is something we can still do together where he actually gets interested in the show as we watched it when i was a young boy and still luckily feels familiar to him. Anyhow, thanks for reading and sorry for the long comment!

I usually don’t like any remakes. With that said the new Hawaii Five-0 show is way better than the old. The new young actors are pretty cool and the new Magnum PI is way better than the old show. I liked the old one, but Huggins, wow. I’ll take her over the old guy and day. The new characters, you can understand their closeness serving in special forces together. My two favorite shows.

I'm shocked the reboot made it for 4 seasons and now has another 2 on the way. Network TV standards are so low. I don't dislike the actor who plays Magnum but he was a terrible choice to play Magnum. There's only one Magnum and it's Tom Selleck!
While I loved Tom Selleck in the original Magnum, the new Magnum PI is great also and I think the new cast are doing very well. NBC picked it up because they thought so too. It has several simularities in names of characters and locations and concept, however plenty of difference to be a difference show but still a good show.

There is only ONE thing I hated about the latest LAST Magnum PI.....I simply loved Jonathan Quayle Higgins and Zeus and Apollo chasing after Magnum, but when I seen that gal portraying HIggins IN BED and becoming seductive to that new Magnum, forget it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At least now, there will be more opportunities for me to do my chores in downtown oahu and NOT get blocked off by film production trucks blocking few BLOCKS to do their taping!!! Im ALL for local tv and movies in HI but when I have to do chores and walk 3 blocks to finish my duties....its a real pain in the A$$

I have no interest in the remake! The original cast were a team. John Hillerman and Roger E. Mosley are now dead and the “team” is gone. But now it was announced recently that the show be cancelled after this season due to the still after effects of the recovery time from the pandemic and now the writer’s strike… that was the nail in the coffin for the reboot… so sad, too bad.
@@odiemodie1 oh my god, you're right.... I just checked. I had to wait for a long time even for those "old" episodes to be shown/translated to the screens in my country and now this.... I just hope that they can wrap the show nicely and let us enjoy it as much as we can, no lose ends. Bummer

It took a couple episodes for me to like it as much as the original... But after watching how fine Jay is, + he has great on screen chemistry with Higgins character+ other than some similarities, it's different in a good way. Plus Jay grows on you, he's so friggin cute... 😉
I watched ONE EPISODE of the reboot. It sucks. This is coming from a man who REMEMBERS the original. Tom Sellick IS Thomas Magnum. The reboot should never have been made.
