In most weaving, after opening the shed(the gap the weft will pass thru), and weaving a pick(one pass of the shuttle) its usual to use a beater of sorts(this can be the edge of the shuttle, a weaving “sword”, or just about anything that’s narrow and is easily manipulated. The beater is used to gently but firmly, press together the weft threads, helping them to become cloth, and keep a nice even edge to work against.
