People may dislike Goebbels, but he was a very effective propogandist. He had most of Germany fooled until the very end.
I don't know how much they were fooled. I think that when your country is being attacked by other countries you tend to, be on the side of your Homeland. There was also fear or reprisals if you spoke out.
