I’m a retired fire rescue battalion chief. When our department “had” to hire blacks they were able to come on board with an application only. Everyone else prior was required to have passed the fire fighter academy AND state paramedic test after finishing the paramedic program. What resulted was one on one tutorial of the new hire while he attended school. Every day hand feed him/her with study material. After failing the scholastic portion and repeating it , made it out with a C and then flunked the state exam twice even tho they were tutored daily. After nearly two years of trying to get this person up to speed he quit and applied to a neighbor department needing diversification that just got a new pay raise contract. After getting hired there he was arrested for growing and selling marijuana in a warehouse and fired. And we had three more similar stories at our house. Affirmative action is so dangerous is this type of story. The most qualified must be hired. Always in these jobs.
If some dude being hired for diversity is the reason some kid dies in a fire cause that guy was unable to do that job. Well if that was my kid I'd probably be behind bars

Years ago while discussing diversity hiring, i used fireman as an example: if your house is burning, you want the best firemen on it, you don’t care about color of their skin, you don’t care about anything, you just want the guys who are good firemen! To be considered for the naval aviation officer's program, you have to take the ASTB which tests you on 7 areas such as math, nautical, mechanical and avionic theory and reading comprehension. Scores go from 20 to 80. I believe to even be considered you had to score a minimum of 50 but in reality the selectees were usually 70+ with quite a few perfect scores. I spent most of my career on carriers and my last ship, a good friend of mine was in the training department. We had a group of officer trainees on board and she had access to all their training records. The group was all white guys except for one black guy--out of the group, he was the only one with a score under 70. I believe he was in the low 50s. This was over 20 years ago btw. 😂 I’m a white guy who went to university then realized they really didn’t want ppl like me there anyway, so gave up on any career in academia. Now I’m training to be a pilot and almost done my commercial license. There were lots of other good reasons to become a pilot right now, but the fact that merit will hopefully always matter more than diversity in aviation did help influence my decision. There are definitely good women pilots but the ones I’ve met, despite having the skills, don’t seem eager to progress on to bigger planes/airlines. Like they have the skills, companies would love to hire them, but they rather stay on as instructors or fly private. I’ve met several that have the skill, but not the confidence, to see themselves as captains on big planes for major airlines. Some ppl say that’s cause it’s such a male dominated occupation that they don’t see other women doing that, so don’t think they can do that. I kinda think that’s bogus, companies love advertising an all female crew when they get the chance and there are plenty of female captains these days. Female astronauts, hell, Boudicca led the Iceni against Rome 2k years ago. Male pilots definitely tend to be more confident, bordering on cocky, which can become a problem. Female pilots tend to be more knowledgeable when it comes to regulations and air law. People can study the regs and be tested on their knowledge but you can’t train someone to be confident. That something you figure out on your own. I heard a 777 captain who was also a training captain for a major airline say that if one of their captains makes a mistake (like fail a ride) and they loose their confidence, that’s a big problem. They don’t want career first officers. And confidence to do the job and take on the responsibility is very much a requirement.
Similar story myself. Went to college to learn programming in the late 90's, looked up the schedule the course was supposed to take, was anxious about a year in that we were 8 months behind schedule, despite our entire class group completing assignments that were supposed to take weeks within days. Realised it's probably something to do with the female instructors, both of whom had to read directly from the study book and couldn't answer any kind of questions and one of whom would routinely gloat about how they only got the job because they were an old woman and that she knew nothing about the subject. The entire year we were there there was a male tutor who seemed to be the only one who had any idea what he was talking about (for example he's the only one who talked about assembly language and concepts like that and he was the only one who could actually answer questions) but despite the fact we were supposed to be tutored by him at least once a week I saw him all of 3 times over the whole year because he was also contracted by about 5 other local colleges and was supposed to be simultaneously teaching in multiple classes for each college.
I realised that even if I miraculously did graduate I'd have no real understanding of the subject and probably wouldn't be functional in a professional setting, so just left and got a job in a warehouse. Been working warehouses ever since. Also killed my interest in programming and I had done it as a hobby beforehand.
Get it done before the music stops! The hiring boom will end! Get going! Go go go!
