as a poverty game player myself, what are we supposed to do? we spend all our time gathered in hidden discords, with no fresh souls to ruthlessly unblockable loop. big events like these are our one occasional chance to take advantage of unsuspecting mainstream players, and spread the word of our super-niche-but very-enjoyable-and-unique [game here] community. how else are we to go out and recruit new players? but more seriously. people who play these games are often extremely committed to them, and large tournaments are a unique opportunity to maybe, possibly, play a set or two without having to worry about any internet connection at all. depending on region and the exact game, this might be a very rare experience for us. i definitely understand the sentiment behind wanting to avoid getting sucked into a set of a game you don't plan to play, and aren't particularly interested in, against someone who is very experienced, when you could be doing anything more preferable, such as driving nails into your own shins. even so, it makes me sad to see poverty game players as a whole dismissed as a waste of time, or even a trap. there is value in these games! even though they have small playerbases, and all the problems associated with that, people still play them! that says something about their quality, i think. so, if you see someone playing a poverty game on a laptop in a corner somewhere, and it looks interesting, don't be afraid to play. most of these games don't cost even half of your soul, contrary to popular belief. if you have concerns about time, make them clear! "just three games please." "we can play a best of five." most of us will take any time you give us at all, and it's possible you'll discover a fun niche game to try out when you get home, or to look deeper into if you want to.
