Reviews:
"Bette Davis turns in a coldly amusing performance as Mildred Rogers in this 1934 film. The film seems rather dated now in 2003. It is no doubt well worth watching for film buffs and Bette Davis fans but may not have as much appeal for the average movie watcher today. It was startling for me to see how young Ms. Davis looks in this move. The actors turn in performances which are basically sound and the story is meaningful and interesting. Leslie Howard is well cast as Philip Carey, the club-footed medical student.
This is a film with a strong message about whom we choose to love and why. However, "Of Human Bondage" didn't seem to have a strong impact on me mentally or emotionally. I felt slightly indifferent and detached about the movie after viewing it. I have an intuition that this may be the reaction that the director was going for. You be the judge!"

Sorry. At 15 I read all Somerset Maugham books. Now at 80 I appreciate I started off on those but at 80 ..... I’ve moved on to biography . It was still a joy to see where he used to write at Raffels in Singapore but they have modernised. It will never be the same again. Thank goodness I saw it in time.
I read The Razor’s Edge as a 13 year old and it still is worth rereading after life experiences. How marvelous that you remember the historic Raffles.
Raffles ? Where was it located ? When I was flush I used to go to other places. Still agree with you. Cheers.
I usually don't like colorization of black & white movies. But somehow this example enhances the film. Davis is extraordinary and matched by Howard's brilliance. A masterpiece.
Chacun son gout, I'd rather the original B/W
Agreed i was part way thru when i took a break and found this colorized version ..i am enjoying it much more. I had actually forgotten how Bette Davis looked&;acted in her youth; the 80's song about Bette Davis eyes is coming to mind..she was remarkably beautiful and so very vulnerable. So was he..touching film..i always think of her as an older witty woman..oddly. masterpiece indeed
@@maryanitaschmidt9651beautifully said, a remarkable lady
Bette's breakthrough role in RKO's prestige picture of 1934. Both she and the phenomenal Leslie Howard are magnificent.
Never found Bette Davis attractive, even when much younger.
@@lorenzomagazzeni5425 She was not a sex symbol, but one of the most talented actresses Hollywood ever produced. No question about it!
Always liked stories by Somerset Maugham. This one was a deeply emotional true to life story.
I loved all of his stories, the 49 tales ? Ciao.
two of the greatest and fenomical actors of all time.
Maybe "phenomenal"?
@@jaellouis4749 yes: interesting way to spell that! - lol
LESLIE HOWARD… in 60 seconds.
Leslie Howard Steiner, born 3 April 1893 in Forest Hill, London.
Serves in Northamptonshire Yeomanry, but relinquishes commission in 1916 after suffering from shell shock.
Begins acting in 1917 in London theatres.
Moves to Hollywood where he often plays the part of the quintessential Englishman. Earns Academy Award nominations for Berkeley Square (1933) and Pygmalion (1938). He also plays Ashley Wilkes in Gone With The Wind.
Returns to England to assist with the war effort but is shot down over the Bay of Biscay in 1943. He was 50.
thank you.
It's such a brilliant movie and performance by Bette Davis. Thank you for sharing!
🎬❤️
Excellent film!!! Great cast! I will never understand how so many want the “hard to get”, self centered person. I had friends that treated their boyfriends horribly and they stuck around! It doesn’t make sense. And when you care for them and respect them, they treat you bad. Us humans are odd!
And most suffer from low self esteem...remember, he had a clubbed foot!!
OMG how she was charming, Bette Davis💖! Unbelievably enchanting 💖💖Soooo good renditions, they both really knew their job. Wonderful! Thanks a lot!!!!❣❣👍👍
It was lovey to see Bettie Davis as such a young woman and a great little actress. They were all good, as was, is, the story; I'm sure we've all seen versions of it unfold in our lives.
Bette Davis
Thankyou x never get tired of this movie know I get to watch in colour x
I’ve seen this but still had to watch. Leslie Howard is a favorite of mine. I like Bette Davis too just not in all her roles. But this one she gets my attention. ❤
Fantastic to watch in colour!! Thank you so very much .Greatly enjoyed !!
THANK YOU! Whoever colorized this
Classic and so hard to watch. Ty for this
Yep still great lol
Better in B/W - the colors remind me of cheap post cards.
It`s interesting. This movie made me realize that throughout my entire life, I have never met a woman who wanted a man just because he had money.
It`s almost gospel that many women are money hunters, and one takes it for granted as a fact of life and doesn`t think about it extensively. But when you think about it, you come to the conclusion that the majority of women just want to love and be loved.
Thank you,beautiful movie
Also watch this classic british film: czcams.com/video/4Jf6_pXIMcs/video.html
Thank you for the suggestion
I think I might like Leslie a little bit more than Bette here. He gives a strong nuanced performance here. Where Bette plays it big but still brilliant.
A movie that is very hard to watch because it`s so near to the cruel reality of human bondage in real life.
Yes life is so elastic ....🇬🇧
Great movie ❤️💋❤️💋
WHY do selfish, wicked people get away so much !!!???? After all he did for you???
Amber Heard
Megan Markle
And more
@@LilyGazou you nailed it. Wicked women, weak men
I think, in this, the Mildred Rogers character is mentally ill.
Were they also in The Petrified Forest?

when it comes to story telling in the big screen
we peaked in the 30's
I's rather see it in the original b/w
I guess this was bronsised not colorized
Remake with laurence harvey and kim Novak 1964!
Name of movie?
@@terry4137 Of human bondage
Kim Novak was so much better looking than Davies was ever. Therefore unsuitable for the part. You look like Kim Novak, any Singapore/Chinese millionaire would set her up any day.
anyone could see she was no good from the start
Righter, samarset mom ?
Colorization. I prefer black and white!
Deliberately misspelled?
Woman bashing , this is so old already
