  • Scotty Kilmer, mechanic for the last 46 years, shows how you can fix your car when the gas pump keeps shutting off as you try to refuel. A little blowing with cleaning out with air is often the simple fix.

Scotty is right on about the evac canister hose. I have a 2016 Buick Verano and the first time I filled up the tank the gas nozzle would shut off after about 8-10 seconds. On the second fill up, I went to another station and the same thing happened. I took the car to the dealership and they did exactly what scotty does in the video. They ran compressed air through the evac hose cleaning whatever dirt/dust was trapped inside and now I have no problems what so ever. However, if cleaning the hose out with air doesn't work, the problem probably lies within the canister itself which may have to be replaced.

I just tried this on my 2006 Dodge Ram 2500, and it worked wonderfully. Couldn't get to the evap canister, so we disconnected the evap line just below the gas tube and some dirt fell out the end of the tube, then sprayed compressed air down that tube. You could hear the air go through it and then there was a soft pop and you could really hear the air flow after that, stuck valve in evap canister. After that I was able to fill up the tank as normal. The evap canister for this year is located above the gas tank and difficult to get to but the way we cleared the tube worked great, thank you so much for posting this video, you saved us a trip to the dealer and probably a lot of money.

Thank you Scotty!!! I've been rackin my brain, or whats left of it on how to solve my evac cannister problem. It apparently creats a "check engine" light. I went to my local CO -OP mechanic and he analyzed my truck the code as "Sumptin be wrong with the evac cannister". I said ok, can it be fixed or replaced, he said yes. After he cleared the codes, for the second time in so many weeks, I thought you better ask Scotty (YOU) what to do. I was also having trouble filling the gas tank, now I know why. Love your videos, Scotty! I have been shamefully driving a 99 Pontiac Grand Am SE for roughly 7 years. For the last 5 years, every time I put gas in my tank, my car struggles to maintain an idle therefore I have to hold my foot on the gas pedal to allow my car to idle at ~2,500 RPM for maybe 2-3 minutes before it idles normally again. After spending $800 in 2012 for a new fuel tank vent valve, evap canister, purge valve and valve near the tank, I still have this problem 4 years later. Only recently, it seems like my car's idle is only getting worse. While parked or at a stop light, I'll occasionally hear what sounds like two quick knocks, followed by my RPMs dropping, the car will rev itself a few times, two quick knocks, and then back to a steady idle. Recently after driving on the highway I came to a stop light where my car wanted to drive itself into traffic. I was holding my foot on the brake terrified while my car held 2,500 RPM, trying to accelerate forward. When I put it in park, the RPMs shot up even higher. I've never felt scared in my car until now and I'm thinking about "push, pull, or dragging" it in to get another vehicle, even though I don't think I could afford it.

Nonconsensus Medicine ... Makes me wonder how dirt or bugs or anything gets into the tube. It's sealed inside the gas tank end and clamped on the other end... If the hose is plugged the rubber must be deteriorating on the inside. Bad hose. Also what about the check valve in the canister being stuck.?

I remember back when Super Leaded 105 octane was being faded out, the gas station I used to fill up my 73 Cutlass Supreme got rid of the Super Leaded pump and replaced it with a diesel pump. Being a stupid teenager, I just pulled my gas burning car, and just started filling up at the same pump I always did. About 5 gallons into the fill, I realized what I did. So, I cut the pump off and topped off the rest of the 20+gallon tank with super unleaded. Well, it ran, but it didn't run good, and the smoke it put out was crazy. I finally burned off the tank of diesel / gas mix and all was well. Of course, that was back in the day of forgiving carburetors.

Check under the truck next to the frame. Of 01 ram has it there I bet ford and chevy did the same in the early 2000's

Sorry, when you fill your tank, and displace the air with liquid, the fumes do not go into the little charcoal canister, they are collected by the Vapor Recovery system on the fuel pump nozzle. Stored in a underground tank at the station, and returned to the refinery by the truck where they are destroyed, usually via oxidation. That charcoal canister under your hood is to collect gas vapors from your tank as you drive, and burn them off in small quantities by your induction sys. (That is also why you should never overfill your tank, as liquid will get into a system that only fumes should be).

Hi Scotty, thanks for your reply last time, my friend found it really helpful. I just have another quick question, I own a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe and I noticed recently that it won't fill up correctly. The tank capacity that is says on the owners manual is 65 liters but I am only able to fill up a maximum of 32 Liters when the fuel light comes on. What would you suggest I do?

WOW! watched 10 other vids on this problem plaging my 03 Expedition... Several correctly indicated was a problem with the EVAP system... Some said just disconnect from the Charcoal cannister (which in my 03 , 5.4L , Exped is nearly inaccessible, under the spare tier between metal surfaces.... , and others just to disconnect as temp fix.... Yours was elegant and worked...thanks. Tom Jones, New Orleans, LA

If you like my car help, be sure to watch my live car talk show every Saturday morning at 10 AM CST on CZcams. I answer your car questions LIVE there. Just go to CZcams and type in the search engine "Scotty Kilmer Car Talk (and put in the coming Saturday's date, such as "Scotty Kilmer Car Talk February 1" or whatever date the next Saturday is)". That takes you to the live event, and shows how many hours and minutes it is before the event starts on Sat morning. And remember, every TUESDAY I upload a new video, so don’t miss them.
