Enter to win an Ibanez RG8: bit.ly/MeshuggahRG8
Premier Guitar’s Perry Bean hung out with Meshuggah's tech, Kent Eriksson, who walks through the bone-crushing, cabinet-free rigs of Fredrik Thordendal, Mårten Hagström, and Dick Lövgren, the three Viking warriors of the extreme prog-metal apocalypse.
Fredrik Thordendal’s newest addition to his arsenal is this 2016 Ibanez LACS (Los Angeles Custom Shop) Stoneman with three Lundgren M8 pickups and a push/pull coil-split option. This Stoneman, like all of Thordendal’s axes, is strung with DR Tight Fit (.009-.072) strings and is tuned F-Bb-Eb-Ab-Db-Gb-Bb-Eb.
Hagström's main guitar is his Ibanez LACS M8M with an alder body and one mighty Lundgren M8 pickup. This one is tuned a half-step down with a foam mute and strung with DR Tight Fit .009-.070) strings.

"They all use the Shure....."
"Sure"
Howard R HAHHA I heard that too...
01:10 Omg is he correcting him?! Not shure
@@lovegruvberg4631 nah, perry likes to say sure after every info he receives
Ola Englund's gotta be pretty happy that a band like Meshuggah uses his signature amp.
pretty cool, Ola is good friends with Fredrik and Marten too.
Its because they were designed by Mike Fortin. I believe they now have signature amps from him.
the old version I guess, the nataS czcams.com/video/Fxxdf2ibvgg/video.html
swidish people all good friends
If you knew anything about Ola (our Swedish jesus) then you'd know that he thinks meshuggah are a shitty band (which is true ;)
Great to see the "yeah-yeah" guy back in action :)
yeahyeah ookay
He was so careful not to use the word 'yeah' :D
TFIFH Felt so bad for him XD
TFIFH yeah
He was suffering lol
ya i kinda feel bad for him. xD..
but man i think he is a great technician.
i think he got anxiety just because he should be speak in english with this particular interview, it's just not his primary language.
keep it up kent !
8:19 all bets are off
This guitar tech is epic, you can tell he really loves his job!
"Looks like a shorter scale...So ya it's a 28 inch"
Yeah, it's the same scale length, it just looks shorter because the bridge falls deeper into a Strat style body.
@@DapperHesher i thought they had 30 inch scale guitars. I know th sigature version does.
@@ooferrell I had a sig Meshuggah model, it's like 29.2" or something. Fred switched back to 27" with his newer guitars (Stoneman).
@@DapperHesher 29.4 if you're refering the Ibanez M8M or M80M.
@@matttaylor1449 Sounds about right. I had one for a bit.
7:52 - Jesus for a moment I thought someone is going to play Clockworks.

Me too
Me too
That was actually pretty informative. I think the takeaway is simplicity and massive amounts of talent go a long way.
Why they don’t use IRS from torpedo live? They’re using fractal IRS.
5:19 "The body is swamp ass" 😂
Ash
“Beautiful”
I find it fascinating that the "Prototype" Fortin pedal eventually became the signature 33 pedal
2:46. Damn that’s some extreme precision to have temperamented frets. Imagine the amount of patience and skill it would take to design that, not to mention the routing on the fingerboard and the bending of the fretwire. It’s really cool though. If I ever get my hands on a guitar withtemperamented frets I’m gonna see how the bends come out.
The thing is, when you bend, it feels like a regular guitar and it sounds regular too.
I don’t think it takes too much time or patience, its design is made with math equations and it’s cut on a CNC machine using that math
@@DingDongDaddyFromDumas Do you know if each individual fret is custom made for its position on the fretboard? Seems like there are a few to tight bends here and there to allow for regular fret wire to be bent into shape. Leveling and crowning must be bit of a procedure too...
Look into the limitations on it too. Intonation on a fretted instrument will always be a compromise across the whole fretboard.
Two very interested, polite and respectful guys. Good job.
Kent is the best, you should do a Rig Rundown on that guy.
i wonder how he feels doing everyone's gear, not just frederik but Marten and Dick
it's quite a handful wouldn't you agree?
I heard the bass line for "The God That Failed" at 1:15 or am I crazy?
YEEEEAH, just the bass and drums are playing I think
"No, it's Fortin, he's a genius."
"I DONT CARE!"
Why he using the real amp (tube amp) as we know he olso had Axe FX as (amp simulator) ? Anyone know?
@@BagusWibisono They might be using the power amp of the tube head and the rest comes from the Axe FX.
@@MikaTarkela No man, they’re using torpedo live as (Cab sim) direct to PA. Right?
@@BagusWibisono They use the Axe-Fx models sometimes, but for some rhythm parts they switched to the Fortin amp, which went into a Reactive Load box to take the amp's output signal down to line level, then they route that into the Axe-Fx and use the Axe's cab sims.
That rig, mate. Simple but some bloody gorgeous stuff in there!
MESHUGGAH NEVER STOP MAKING MUSIC PLEASE!!
13:18 haha he seems so damn chill
Absolutely love the look of that first Stoneman guitar. Would love to have one at some point, but I'm sure I'm much too poor to afford it. Nice rundown and some really cool gear.
His swenglish is so stong, its almost starting to sound like regualr swedish
1:13 is that the god that failed by metallica?
thank god, i was drowning into the comments to see if someone noticed xD
Alejandro Plana did they do a tour together?
Same lol
Yes that totally is. That bass sounds so good too
I was totally playing the guitar part in my head instead of listening to the interview.
8.17 Did they just crack up because of the "yeah yeah"s from the precedent rundown? Awesome haha
We did because before we filmed this updated episode, Kent showed us this video that someone made from the original RR back in 2013: czcams.com/video/lMmsPRl-a_w/video.html
Gotta love a guy who can take a joke, especially in metal. That's what I love about Meshuggah in general - they make the heaviest music but still are fun guys and don't take themselves too seriously.
4:33
Next day: "Meshuggah searching for a new tech"
RIG RUNDOWN UPDATE: As of Oct 30th 2016 they are now using the Fortin Amplification custom Meshuggah Amp - (Single Channel 50-Watt, no effects loop, custom designed power transformers) (Ground-up custom built - turret board construction with point to point wiring - First used October 30th 2016 live show in Toronto).
Source, my fellow gearhead?
Beng B I think I remember seeing Fredrik make a post about it on his fb page. I'd do anything to get my hands on one of those amps.
I was there and it sounded absolutely insane. Look up the Future Breed Machine video from that show. Everyone's jaws dropped during the solo.
Why he using real amp (tube amp) as we know he olso had Axe FX as (amp simulator) ? Anyone know?
Kent, du äger! I'm impressed that he keep all three of them running, considering that Meshuggah plays some demanding stuff.
Those guitars are mouthwatering
Love this. Big guitarist get so finicky with their rigs...so many moving parts....the way they have their shit set up is exactly how I do. Everything on. Everything full blast. Call it a day. The best.
Awesome! The new guitars are super...
Didn't realise they started allowing pornography on You Tube.
Oh hello stranger!

Wow, very cool set up and the guitars and bases look awesome. Great rig rundown!
good to see the guitar tech from the last time still with them.....
"This is all, dick.." I love Sweeds xD
I love this guy.
Beautiful axes!
enjoyed the rundown
A NEW ONE?! YES
Super excellent!
Just received the FTM33, what a sick looking guitar!
I just watched the Koloss one yesterday, this was released perfectly on time for me! Something was missing apart from the yeah yeahs, must be Rebecca Dirks!
Can we get one of Metallica once they go on tour? I’d love to see Kirk, James and Rob talk about their gear
We would love to... just gotta convince the band!
Premier Guitar Wow, I didn't expect you guys to respond so fast to be honest. Big fan of these, the Rig Rundowns are what got me into the channel since I'm a guitarist and bassist myself but I do agree. Hopefully they'd be up for it and do it for their fans
They're using AxeFX's now. They ditched their huge touring rigs a couple years ago.
Thanks for checking us out! 2017 we will make the Metallica Rig Rundown happen!
Premier Guitar I hope they'll be up for it
wicked frets on that second stoneman from Fredrik
The return of the yeah yeah
28 inch scale length must feel crazy to play. I'm currently getting used to 27 and it feels a lot more different than i was expecting before i got it.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs rig rundown should be next...With this guy. Then all the yeahs of the world will be spoken at once.
Kent's such a cool guy god damn.
when i look showing guitars i feel ASMR tingles
"so what's your set up like"
"Aaaaaa I dunno, computers do it all"
"Thanks this is Premier Guitar"
GREAT RIG RUNDOWN U GAIZ!
Came here for the yeah yeah yeah. Was only a bit disappointed.
projectgoatse yea yea i agree
@@retrorewind6042 yea yea me too

I would love to see a Stoneman at NAMM this year. I'd love for it to become a production model.

*points at camera*
You sneaky bastard
I dont play guitar but that first one he picked up was a beauty 😍.
Meshuggah är världens bästa band!
Mårten's guitar looks so awesome. like a solid, bludgeoning weapon
It is!
YEAH YEAH YEAH
"Gotcha" guy strikes again.
Now we know what inspired Jordan Peterson
Hey, could you guys try to hit up Faith No More next time (hopefully) they go on tour? I would love to see Billy and Jon's rigs.
Kent seems like a great guy
Love the 33 on the back of his T-shirt. 😂
That is ridiculously massive. Like playing a surf board
Thanks for the close up on the axe fx :O :O

no i am going to drink my coffee and play guitar u can come at me tho
I love that Ibanez Stoneman....Frederik's new gutiar...it looks even better than the production model. I love it's black glossy finish with white binding all over it...sexy as hell
Ahhh. I see the "33" pedal prototype in there. I can't wait for mine to get here.
That Shure QLXD14 wireless system alone costs 1300 € (just one transmitter and one receiver)
A single transmitter costs 440 €...
Also you need a whole new set of receivers and transmitters with different frequencies for different countries, regarding the radio broadcast laws. THere are five different versions of the QLXD14.
Oh and don't forget the extra batteries, they don't take normal AA / AAA batteries. These are made by Shure and cost 100 € a piece, with only 1450 mAh capacity
JackCarver10 very nice
cool, what's the alternative then?
Fucking love Kent's attitude.
"They all use these errr...Shore..."
"Sure". X'D
Marten uses a (apparently) Ibanez ARZIR28 (probably heavily modified) on the Violent Sleep of Reason tour. Where is it?
Out of all of them, 0:37 is my most favourite :)
8:18 I love this interviewer! The way he hit ken the tech with his own “yea yea yea” had me dying haha every time ken said yea yea yea throughout the interview I was distracted lol 8:18
Kent er faen fantastisk! Virker som en stand up guy
This was just days before they got those custom amps from Fortin. I want to hear those so bad!
Did that fortin prototype eventually ended up as the fortin 33?
yeah yeah
5:49 - You know I saw this bass on the previous rig rundown and I still say the same thing when I saw it, How the hell do you play that?!
WOW they only use cabinet impulses live? amazing
"The sustain, listen! it goes on for ever..."
Kent doing it like a baws!!!
Kent Eriksson IS THE GREATEST!
Yeah yeah yeah!
0:39 any version of this ibanez like this exact model out yet?
Yo, does anybody know what model strap they use? I can see they are Levy's leather straps, looks like it could be the signature series or something, but its hard to tell is it the 3" wide or 4" wide model? I have 2 heavy baritones (Ibanez M8M and E2 horizon NT7) and using normal straps is painful on the shoulders so wondering if anybody has any advice! Cheers
I don't get it. They take the direct Signal from the Speaker Out of Randal Heads and put them into the Loadboxes for the clean Tones, but they don't use the Clean Channel of the Randals?
Hermann Hase
Out from the Randall, high gain channel, into the loadbox then to the AxeFx and out to the PA. Clean and solo sounds with effects from the AxeFx. It's a simple connection! The clean channel from the Randall is not used because limited sound options!
1:38 gosh that gray m2m looks so sick. I would wont in glossy gray tho!
This Tech is the best
"Yeah Yeah Kent" hahahahah
Can someone explain what happens with the clean tone? Never been that confused... :( How do they bypass the randall distortion;
i like how "the god that failed" just randomly plays here and there
a fixed bridge with a locking nut and fine tuners?? Wild!
EVERYONE THEY RELEASED FEDRICKS GUITAR THE FTM33
These videos are awesome but I would love to see you do some stoner/sludge/postmetal bands like Bongripper, Ufomammut, Neurosis, Cult of Luna or Amenra...!
We LOVE Scott Kelly and Neurosis but they need to hit Nashville. Currently the band is only slated to hit the West Coast.
Bongripper would be sick. And asking questions to the guitarist about scale lengths and string gauge and tension and whatnot since they tune F standard.
Psyfonify I’ve seen Bongripper twice. White Burny Les Paul Custom with presumably 24 3/4” scale. Many amps, tons of volume. Don’t know about string gauges
Is that silver Fortin prototype pedal the grind pedal Fortin sells on their website?
Anyone else have an Ibanez RGA8? If so what string gauges are you using if you tune a half step down?
Does someone think that it would be possible to replace the EdgeIII-8 Ibanez by that sort of ABM Bridge ?
One of the few of these I've seen where the guitar tech is a real nerd who's way outclassing the interviewer in knowledge. Usually the interviewer is the tech guy asking dorky questions to the rocker dude.
damn this guy is such a good interviewer
