Thank you Ruth Ann. My sister just passed and I helped my niece clean out her house. She had a crock pot that I think was from the 70s. My niece was going to donate it to a thrift store. I snagged it up and she said “what do you want that old thing for?”. I told her it will outlast the newer one I have now and (like you said) it won’t burn food. Plus I remember when they first came out 🥰. The older things work the best! I appreciate you - God bless you.

@@Anita3kidsS. You can start with just a big pot. Water bath. Some put a towel at the bottom. You already have both.
One set of canning glass,12, comes with lid and rings. Walmart used to have that for 11.97. Now, it is more, but still doable. Can tomatoes. Acidic foods in the water bath. Some peopel even can meat, using water bath, but that take's, at least 3 hours of simmering. Where there is a will, there is a way. lol.

Oh by the way…your missing medium size grater, have you looked in the boys play dough stuff area 😉….been known to happen, believe me 😂

Dessert was her canned peaches that I would help can. Such good memories.

I'm going to go to goodwill and thrift stores to try and see if I can find a vintage one. For those who have a modern crockpot, I wonder if you could plug it into a timer so it cycles on and off. But I would also use one of those oven thermometers with a probe to make sure it stays in the safety zone. (I think some of them can send an alert to your phone.) The other thought I had was to put some sort of insulation between the heating element and the pot. I know people sometimes add water to the inside of their roasters. Just some ideas - has anyone tried something similar?
And thanks Ruth Ann! You always have wonderful tips.

I also have an old time crockpot and prefer to use it over my newer one because like you say, it cooks better, it has a low and a high setting only. I was gifted a new roaster and it went out within just a few uses and I found that I really liked it for canning. I did purchase another one from a thrift store to get an older model and I love it even more than the one that I had been given. They built things to last in longer in the 70 and 80's in my opinion. Things seem more disposable and cheap these days.

I'm like you with modern roasters. I work in food service, and the "HEALTH" Inspectors tell us the food has to stay at a temperature between 145°-165° in order for it to NOT grow bacteria. I know my modern crackpot or "SLOW" cooker, as we call it, gets well hotter than that, because I have tempt it, it gets very frustrating, especially when I put a roast or anything in the roaster, crackpot so I don't have to be right on top of it...thank you for all you share with us.

I thought it was just me! No! My Crockpot is the problem! I will be scouring for an older one. The one I received from my brother and his wife in 1985, when I got married died around 2000. It never burned anything. I've had at least 3 new ones since (one that got a broken handle right away!) and they all boil everything to death or scorch the food. It is so frustrating!
All of our weddings are done...for our children, that is. Our oldest grandchild is turning 18 this summer. So I expect grandchildren to start marrying in the next 5 to 15 years (if the Lord tarries!)

I got food poisoning in the 1970s along with a youth group at church from sloppy joes made in a ‘vintage crock pot’. It took me decades to get over the fear of illness before I bought my first slow cooker a few years ago. You are correct that new ones cook hotter, but they are safer. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for confirming this! I always wondered why my slow cooker cooks fast, thinking it was just the model, which is a Hamilton Beach. The one I have was purchased around the mid 90's, based on the one you've shown that looks to be a late 60's to mid 70's model.

I know it won’t work if you’re feeding for a crowd, but making them in a 9x13 pan in the oven keeps the potatoes from breaking down and getting “mashed” so much! Love these potatoes, I make them all the time!

I used to have a crock pot from the 70s just like the one you have. One of my prized possessions is my mother’s old electric skillet. It is cast iron and heavy duty and works like a charm. My husband replaced the plug on it and I have used it the last 32 years. I wish you could still get them made that well!

My mother in law had the same problem with her electric smoker. My husband made, essentially an extention cord with a dimmer switch on the end. That way she can restrict the amount of power to the smoker and lower its temperature.

The USDA may have gone a little overboard to try and save people from food poisoning occurring when food is left at low temps for long enough for bacteria to grow to a dangerous level, BUT BE CAREFUL! I have a very clear memory of a local well-known chain restaurant that poisoned many because potatoes were held at a too-low temp! Do your research and know temps and times required for safe low-temp cooking! Thank you for the videos; I always learn something, and enjoy the videos very much.
