I like "The Screen". It's a 9 minute breakdown. Or it's like in a way, Doom Metal's response to Meshuggah's "bleed" IMO
👍😄
Even though Blayne's reviews are easily the most entertaining, I think Sarah is probably the best straight up reviewer because of her knowledge of the bands she reviews and the clear and concise language that explains the actual sound of an album.
WOOP record hermits
I think they are all good.
She's also much easier on the eyes! Praise the Lord!
Couldn't agree more. While I like all reviewers are great and I think they all have their unique strengths and style, I do enjoy Sara's the most.
I just picked up tickets to see these guys and Bell Witch next week =D
Colby Goatley I’m seeing Sleep and Bell Witch TONIGHT!!!
That's what I'm looking forward too. Haha
You mean Mirror Reaper? That sounds awesome.
Nice, I'm seeing them in Philly 6/29. And yeah, Bell Witch is playing Mirror Reaper (at least I think?), which is gonna be so f'ing awesome!
Does the whole night consist of five songs...between both bands?
Welcome back Sarah! I personally gave it 4 skulls. I thought in reverie and lungs reach were a bit droning as well.
ALSO super glad you shouted out Tomb Mold. That album fucking CRUSHES!! It’s in the mail for me right now
I've been a listener of Yob for several years. I've been a fan of neurosis for a long, long time.
As great as yob is, there will NEVER be a second coming of neurosis.
I do love yob.
I almost hate myself for discovering YOB so late. Trying to track down the rest of their catalogue. The newest record dropped my jaw...I can appreciate Mike's medical journey as I've gone through something similar...I was so pissed that I had a gig the same night they played here in Ottawa.
i'm surprised to hear your assessment on 'clearing the path to ascend' being angry the whole way through because 'marrow' for me is the best track that this band has done and certainly the most dynamic in terms of the best balance between gentle and heavy.
Yeah, you nailed it man. For me, Marrow is the highlight of Yob & this new album feels like they’ve taken the dynamics & feeling of Marrow & expanded it into a full album.
I agree completely. Also, her having negative connotation with a 4 track hour long album did not convince me she knows much about the doom scene. Especially a band like YOB, who can convey so much in an 18 minute track like Marrow. I'd take that over 3 minutes of bs anyday.
oh i'm not here to question anyone's credibility, but to say that 'clearing the path to ascend' is angry from start to finish is just... well, i can't get past that assessment. it just doesn't make sense at all.
I agree with you guys. I LOVE ATMA and Clearing the Path To Ascend and I don't agree with her take on those two albums AT ALL. Marrow is an amazing song and not angry in the least bit. I also (while I still enjoyed it) like The Great Cessation THE LEAST of any YOB release. Talk about one dimensional...if any YOB album is it's that album. She didn't mention The Unreal Never Lived and to this day that's still my favorite YOB album. I agree with her take on the new album but The Screen might be my favorite track on the album. She puzzles me quite often with her reviews of the Stoner/Doom genre.
I also think The Screen is a great song. It withholds YOB's roots and makes the album much more versatile, representing the broader Stoner/Doom genres. Cheers
Sarah is easily the best part of Banger TV. Another great review.
Always feels good to see my name amongst the many Patreon donors!
Witch mountain is badass. That lead singer 😍😍
megaman exe you are everywhere
Im stoked to see them with Bell Witch in a few weeks
Same here!
Saw them on their Detroit stop and it was unbelievable
YES. I love fridays.
I love "the screen'...especially in juxtaposition to the soaring "Ablaze"
I'm really glad you shouted out the Tomb Mold record, it's fanfuckingtastic
YOB is love!
Great to have you back Sarah! Glad to have BangerTV in my life again. Question: When's the video for Top 5 albums you've missed so far dropping? I want to hear Sarahs thoughts on Visigoth \m/
I just picked up tickets to see Bell Witch and these guys happen to be headlining ;)
Hoped for Zeal&Ardor! But now I got two albums to enjoy today. So, I'm dumb, don't listen to me.
Morris deLoerris New Z&A is among the best releases of 2018. Yob kicks ass too.
Great in-depth review. You just earned a new subscriber \m/ oh, and btw, YOBislove.
Having seen them live just recently (first stop on their current tour), I can say with certainty that The Screen is amazing live. I don't think it comes across on the album well, but it really shines in the live setting. It's crushingly heavy.
The Screen is incredible, dense doom and a brilliantly brutal riff. The album is triumphant.
Why Sarah dislikes "The Screen"? :( That riff is awesome. Still a great review and welcome back.
I really like that stomping! :D Thank's for replying Sarah! By the way I have a question to you. Since you like Doom stuff, have you heard about Sinistro from Portugal? They are without a doubt one of our best bands here.
For starters listen to "A Partida" from Semente. Then try the new album "Sangue Cássia", that is being well received in Europe (they toured with Paradise Lost and Pallbearer). Well our scene is quite diverse besides Moonspell. We got some cool new bands like Gaerea and Omnious Circle, if you like MGLA or Portal. Check as well Process of Guilt if you like Post-Metal with some Doom elements and Miss Lava is you like the good vibes from Clutch. We got plenty of stuff actually, but most of them don't get the cred they deserve. If you want some more from any genre I can spell it. XD
One of my favourite bands from Portugal is Black Cilice. One man Raw Black Metal band. He has released few albums and my favourite one is Banished From Time which is the newest album that was released in 2017.
I'm not a religious/spiritual man at all, but we're fucking blessed by whatever gods might be that we got Mike Scheidt in our lifetime. Not only is their music amazing and seeing YOB live an incredible experience I can't even put into words, if you've met Mike in person you know how genuine and amazing he is as a person. Not to discredit Aaron and Travis, but I know Mike's had some close calls in recent times with his health so I'm really glad he pulled through and can still continue to make amazing art.
DarkAgnesDoom exactly. The slower lurching parts make a lot more sense and feel a lot different if you know where the music is coming from especially.
It is a great album, and I've been a long time supporter of these guys so I'm thankful we still get new music from Yob given all the shit that could have happened.
It looks like this album is going to be the one that finally gets me into Yob. I wasn't big on the last few releases I heard...but this album is pretty good. Maybe I need to start from the beginning now....
Why you don't add some sounds from the album anymore ?
Yessssssss!!!! Sarah's Back. Love to have Overkill review every Friday!
I really loved "The Screen". It's just so simple, but so powerful and beautiful at the same time. Easily one of my favorite tracks. But I totally get why you either love it or hate it which seems to be the case with most people. Dope album, awesome band, and a great review.
WOOO VIP (Visually Impaired Person) saw his name: Justin Miller. Glad you guys are back with Overkill Reviews. Please rview Lago: Sea of Duress if you can thanks!
I loved Atma and CTPTA. More than ORH. But ORH is on par with the other two for the most part.
Go ahead and count my vote for Tomb Mold when you guys come back and do your “records we didn’t review but should have” video. That record is a banger and will be in my top five at the end of the year.
Thanks for the mention of Witch Mountain. They are my favorite Portland band. Their previous release, Mobile of Angels, is so under-appreciated if you ask me. By the way, our state is pronounced Ory-gun, (not 'gone', we're still here).
I've been listening to this album for the last couple weeks or so and it haunts me in the quiet moments. I first got into them with "Catharsis," which blew me away, but the stout songwriting is just next level on "Our Raw Heart". I can't see many albums this year being better than this.
2016 was the year for thrash (Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, Testament)
2017 was the year for death metal (Dying Fetus, Cannibal Corpse, Broken Hope, Incantation)
2018 is the year for stoner/doom metal (Yob, Orange Goblin, Fu Manchu, Earthless)
Cheers sarah! Yeah reppin eugene! Yobs importance to the scene here cannot be overstated. They're incredible musicians & just all around great dudes.
Hey guys, thanks for putting out reviews again. Just a comment: On previous seasons one of the things I really liked was the samples of tracks with commentary, often I would hear a sample and just know I needed to get the album. I miss those :(
No way, The Screen and songs on Atma are my best faves.
Damn. I love the screen
If you've not checked out the Coexistence EP, do so. Have not checked out the Witch Mountain release yet.
I literally always thought it was "Y-O-B".
wildeflowerboy it would've have dots between each letter
Thanks for the review!!!
Oh man that Witch Mountain album cover is delightful!
Clearing the Path to Ascend - One dimensional, angry all the way throughout?
WHAT THE FUCK XD
Does Sarah have her own youtube channel or blog or anything? Her taste is very close to my own so would like to keep up with what she recs.
Was just about to listen for the first time when this popped up! Even more excited now :)
This album was my first time hearing YOB. And it was fucking great.
Awesome review, made me really curios on YOB. What do you think of the new Tremonti album?
Just bought this album. I had never heard of them before. The cover just looked cool.
Hell yeah that Witch Mountain album kicks ass!
I wish these reviews would dig into the lyrical content of the albums. The lyrics, for me (especially with Yob), make the music a lot more whole than just focusing on the music itself. Just a thought.
Check out Brad's reviews he often deep dives into lyrics.
I would rank this third among Yob albums. Very nice to have this reviewed, regardless.
I agreed with everything except your opinion of "The Screen" and the last 2 yob albums. personally, i think the darker direction of "Clearing The Path..." and "ATMA" is what makes YOB unique, in the same way that Neurosis took a massive hairy dump on my listening habits when I first saw them live (supporting Entombed in London in 1999! - seriously, entombed looked weak after the utter barrage of "Through Silver In Blood" live). I saw Yob in London a few years back with Pallbearer and Bast in support. frankly, they were stunning and set themselves apart from the rest of the Doom scene with their ferocity and dark approach. The new album is hench. Long may they reign!
Bask
Eloquent as always, great job Sarah!
Just saw them in New Orleans at One eyed Jacks with voivod it was amazing! And I've been listening to voivod since dimension hate Ross came out but I'm a newcomer to yob. And they did not disappoint 👽🤘. They are a beast..... Fuck yes
the screen is maybe my favorite track .. then again CTPTA and ATMA are my favourite yob albums so maybe that tracks for people like me who like the glacial ploding grind
the sound kinda reminds me of early alice in chains. Gonna check this album out since im kinda wanting for AIC type of new music to listen too.
Review Exmortus
Great yob,
Hey Banger, you guys need to play some more audio clips in these reviews. It’s hard to know what the reviewers are talking about without some actual samples of the music. It seems like you were doing this well before the hiatus, why the change?
Fuck yeah, seeing them next month
My favorite song on the album was The Screen
Hey Sarah! Wondering what are your thoughts about Uncle Acid? I heard they are about to the enter studio for a new record. :)
I dont know what Sarah thinks, but Uncle Acid are my favorite! I love driving my neighbors here in suburban New Orleans nuts by cranking 13 Candles and Runaway Girls up to 11 on my new bluetooth speaker!
"the second coming of Neurosis" ummm... no. They don't sound anything alike other than being heavy and slow
Can’t wait to see these guys with Bell Witch!!
Fuck yes! YOB is a waaaay better band to review than Ghost. I can't wait to see them in California with Acid King!!! Fuck yeah for giving Tomb Mold a shout, fucking brutal. Dam no Exmortus shout out!? Too much noodling for your liking Sarah? DK are you an Exmortus fan?
YOB.... The vocals sound exactly the same as the lead singer of Dimma (Stefan Jakobsson).
2nd coming of Neurosis? I don't get that reference at all. I LOVED ATMA and CLearing the Path to Ascend and The Great Cessation is my least favorite YOB album of all of them. The Unreal Never Lived is still my favorite YOB album but Our Raw Heart is AMAZING but I disagree with you once again...The Screen is an amazing track and this new album sounds NOTHING like the Great Cessation. Songs like ATMA and MARROW are incredible. YOB is the best trio in the genre they belong to. No one is even close.
Agree. That statement threw me off also. Yob is powerful and immerse, but Neurosis are in a whole category of their own.
Yea. I know Neurosis is a big influence of Mike's. but I don't hear a direct link to the two bands at all. Maybe in theory but not in actual sound. Mike is also really influenced by SLEEP and I would never say that Yob is the new Sleep. It's just a really weird thing to say.
agree 100%... like all the albums for various reasons but the unreal never lived was a musical experience for me that went way beyond being just a good “doom” album. the only thing in common with neurosis was maybe the place i felt i went to when listening to that album for the first time. very deep. our raw heart has a bit of that too. i think he really put all of himself in it.
You guys seriously think Neurosis has nothing to do with Yob? That sounds so stupid.
@@mschell8022 I can safely say 2 years later that YOB is NOT the new Neurosis. That was a really strange thing for her to say.
Where is the Exmortus shout out -.-
I like ATMA. not a big fan of his higher pitch vocals.
these reviews lose something when you don't play parts of tracks through it.
Dave C agreed, I fucking hate that they arnt cut in any more.
The great cessation is my favorite so far I've yet to hear the new album and I've heard it's a lot like
How are you going to ignore the best album of the year so far in Stranger Fruit by Zeal & Ardor?
jerooo159 nah, too folky
Did this lady just say that "Clearing the Path to Ascend" didn't make good use of dynamics?
It's time to wake up.
Aaaar Raaarr heart, is what I meant!!
Just received this album for Fathers Day U.k. And it's Fuckin awesome!!!!!

Diver tick you light us
It really doesn't! I'm a medical transcriber so I come across it quite frequently. Excellent review BTW I'm stoked to listen to Our Raw Heart
Getty Lee esk? I don't think so.
Our Raw Heart is utterly fantastic. Have to disagree here though just in that Atma & Clearing The Path To Ascend are my two favorite Yob albums and I f'ing love The Screen!!!! Also The Great Cessation is one of my least favorite Yob albums.
I agree 110% with everything you posted.
I would love to see you in a lock horns debate
6 stars!!! Doom on.
please review Cor Scorpii - ruin
I’m a patron donor and my name wasn’t in the thank you list. Thanks!
Thanks for joining us! If you donated after June 1 will be in the next updated credits. If you donated before and we missed you please let us know.
BANGERTV - All Metal Thank you for the response. I donated during the first few days of the patreon campaign, but I’m not mad at you. So how about an Overkill Rewind for 1986?
Oregon is pronounced "OR-gan", like a (raw) heart, or the musical instrument.
That's close, but the soft e between the r and the g is emphasized. Also it's not GAN its GIN but the I is subtle.
Never knew I cared about this that much but there it is lol
Sarah is my fave! Blaine is funny but Sarah is cute and very knowledgeable .
you are my favourite reviewer ☺️❤️🤘😭
