  • I figured I would try something different. Can you clean a carburetor with Castrol Super Clean? Let's see how it turns out. Maybe I left it in too long?

I might do it again but not leave it in as long?

That darker substance is the hydroxides reacting with the aluminum oxide layer. You can scrub it off with a very fine stainless steel wire brush and it will leave an extremely bright looking finish. That is how I got my AFB and AutoPilot to look so clean on the aluminum parts. Super clean and lemishine! There are usually forms of hydroxides in purple degreasers which are excellent at breaking down the oxide layer of aluminum. Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide are the most common types I have found but both work really well at degreasing and brightening aluminum. You should be able to take that grayish layer right off leaving a really clean finish with little effort. If not spray with super clean and scrub away! The jet pockets are a real pain!

I will try and give it a quick brushing. I'm not to worried about it being all shiny.

A quick clean is ok with super clean but a long soaking will discolor the aluminum on the carb.... A better choice would be to boil the carb or use a sonic cleaner... Pine sol works great in them.... Man I miss the old carb dip formula 😢... Small parts I just blast with walnut shell.

Yeah it has a patina look now. Oh well.

It will discolor the oxide layer slightly but not effect the strength of the aluminum. You can brush the discoloration off. It will remove all the corrosion off of the surface and even carbon, leaving completely bare aluminum for a short time until the oxide layer returns protecting the aluminum. This and citric acid is how I got my carter afb on my channel to look so clean. This cleaner is an excellent brightener for smaller parts too. Hope this helps.

I was wondering why you left us hanging on the last vid. LOL Have you ever tried Evaporust? I bet a dip in that would finish off all the rust and corrosion.

I have a gallon can of carburetor clean up. It has a basket within the can to hold small parts but not a whole carb body.

Gunk Hydroseal was the ticket back in the day. You could put the nastiest carburetor in there and all of the gunk would basically just fall right off.

@@NathansMoparGarage Those are the newer flush rivet design that were made by Western Forge for Sears. There is a letter on them that is the date code of production. They mimic what S-K would offer later on because Ideal Industries owned both WF and S-K for a number of years. I just bought a bunch of tools from a coworker, mostly all USA made Craftsman, including some pliers. I paid under $1 each when you factor in how many pieces were in the bag I bought (and I got a DeWalt tool bag with the deal too).
