On EmuTube I was watching Nugget's video where he was concerned that farmer Jason keeps messing with his family nest and checking out the eggs because farmers have been known to eat eggs and in his experience, " . . . once the humans start eating eggs it is impossible to break them of the habit so the only thing to do is attempt to get re-homed away from the egg eaters." 😉

Jason if I remember it correctly Carl and Debbie at IMA SURVIVER SANCTUARY ate a few of their eggs before they decided it was time to sit on the rest of them. Maybe Lester or Jami can explain the reason why.

Jason, even though your Emu's do some interesting or suspicious, be confident that Nugget and Goldy have thousands of years of info hard wired in their brains. It may be the first time for both, however they are part of the vast mystery of creation. I just love when you start showing Nug-Nug attention. The way he melts. First the body then the neck go flat. Such a strong dusplay of comfort and safety. Yes sir. "Ya'll be good".
The way he followed you to the nest says a lot. After you checked the eggs he stood between you and the nest and it looked like he was rustling and puffing up his tail feathers. That might have been an sign that he was protecting the nest.

Hello Jason and Brooke! This is so exciting. I believe Nugget was covering up his future deputies. Shocking to find 10 emerald green eggs. Another shocker was that Peaches enjoyed her brushing. Jesse and Honey getting a brushing and copper too. They want to look beautiful for all the new eggciting eggs! Between the EMU and the Victorian Crown Pigeons this will be an eggciting journey. Absolutely. Jessie is totally giving Honey space and allowing her to be loved on, brushed, etc, without any fussing at all. Then when Jason was brushing Honey and Jessie came over and touched noses with Honey at the same time, that is the biggest sign that Jessie is very happy Honey has arrived.
I love how Nugget sits down beside you to listen the conversation and get loves.

Edited: I searched on the behavior of the male Emu with the eggs and read that he may have been trying to cover the newest egg laid. It may have been newly laid and he was taking care of it. (So smart)
After zooming in on that video it appears as though Nugget was trying to turn that egg. He definitely was trying to move it.

Nugget is now starting to play his parental role. He is checking on the eggs, he is keeping them together after she lays a new egg and trying to cover up the eggs with leaves and other debris after she lays. I think that time of egg laying is coming to an end and he senses that it is going to be his turn to have the eggs and nest the way he wants it. I do believe he will sit. But, I know absolutely nothing about emus, except I love Nugget to pieces. And Goldie is a precious girl and I can’t imagine the two of them not being a pair. I think they will love each other like Gus loves Loretta. I love Goldie and I am so happy that Brooke and Jason changed their mind about getting a 2nd emu. And Nugget now has the most beautiful wife,and she will be a great Mom. Your Texas Neighbor

Nugget was looking over your shoulder as you were relooking at the video that Brooke sent you. It's like he's checking to see what Brooke caught and if he needed to defend himself, like saying, It wasn't me, I did not cover those eggs. LOL I so hope that he will start sitting. Goldie sure has done her part and now it's time for the Nuggster to hop on those eggs. Wow, 10 eggs that is a lot of eggs plus she may lay even more. If they all hatch, I hope you have lots of friends who want baby emu's. They are so adorable. I am getting excited now to see what Nuggest does and if they all hatch.

So, how about adding some large tree logs for your goats to climb on. It seems like the picnic table just isn't enough to satisfy their urge to climb. You can just pre-plan to align them so you can still drag the pasture when you want to.
That's too funny! I was thinking the exact same thing when he panned out over the goat area. One lonely picnic table just isn't enough for all those energetic goats. There are so many different fun things that can be put out there to entertain them all day long!
I’ve felt that way for a long time. A play structure or mini trampoline. Even some sort of balancing half circle on the ground they can climb on to go back n forth would be fun.

Jessie loves her, you can tell because she doesn't have any mixed feelings about Honey getting attention. And when Jason was brushing Honey, Jessie came over and touched noses with Honey. That is the ULTIMATE sign of friendship. So wonderful to see. They are herd animals, they are made to need others of their own kind. Exhilarating to watch!

Ya'll should put a trail camera on the area of the eggs so we can all see what they're doing. This would be like watching the Eagle nest cam. 😊
I have been doing some Emu research. Very interesting information Mr. Google Pants provided. He suggested that Daddy Emu's be provided straw to help with nesting and once Daddy sits down he should be provided drinking water near the nest. Food can be provided but Daddy may or may not eat very much while sitting. The eggs should not be messed with or moved by humans because Goldie and Nugget chose that spot to lay the eggs. Straw for Nugget, Grandaddy Jason, is what is needed for now. It won't be long before Nugget sits down on those eggs.😊

I am so glad Nugget wasn't eating those eggs. As you say, I guess time will tell if he sits on them & what happens to them. You would think someone should be sitting on those eggs right after they're layed to keep them warm. Strange birds with strange habits! We're getting educated about emus that's for sure. I think all of the animals enjoyed being brushed, even Peaches. Maybe watching the donkeys get brushed she thought she should check it out herself!.
I understand that Emu eggs lay dormant until all the eggs are laid which is typically around 16 or so. And yes. Don’t touch them.

Glad to see Nugget starting parental duties. Perhaps you could put a band on one of your emu's legs (like MaryCarl's Victoria pigeons) so that you could easily tell the difference between them at a distance. Glad to see that Honey is fitting right in at Cog Hill Farm.

Emu do NOT have an egg tooth like other birds, they also do NOT unzip eggs like other birds. Instead they smash through the egg membrane and shell when the time is right for them, when their pipping muscles kick in to help the chick find it's way out.
The male will build the nest (which sits on the ground) into which the female will lay 5 to 15 dark green eggs over several days.

Nugget may just surprise many of us! Maybe a motion activated camera would be cool to keep an eye on the emu eggs. OMGosh! Could you EVEN imagine having 5 or more emu hatchlings racing around the pasture!? 😲
A great way to share the shed fur with the wild birds, I loved to use the wire suet cage to hang under a covered area and keep it filled with the fur after grooming. Once the birds find it, they keep coming back to get more and it doesn't get blown away by the wind. So hanging some on the corners of the outdoor barn stalls (high enough out of reach for the barn cats for the bird's safety) would be good location (easy access to fill and birds to use).

They found an egg with what looked like tooth marks. Maybe keep them in your thoughts while they resolve their fencing issues to ensure their babies are safe.

Sometimes they are not viable and will eat them or roll them off to the side based on other channels I’ve seen.
