  • Launched in 1989, Real World Records has grown into a label of wide-ranging, world-class music from all corners of the globe. Whilst there is a tendency for people to pull together this diverse range of releases under the banner "world music", the reality of the Real World output extends beyond this categorization. Great music is created irrespective of the nationality of artists. Many of the most exciting sounds that on the label are the result of collaborations between musicians from many different countries.
    The Real World Recording Week - 1991 - when Real World Studios threw open its doors for one week to 75 international artists and producers from over 20 countries. Not only were several albums by individual artists recorded, but also the accumulation of so many creative minds in one place inevitably led to the start of exciting new musical dialogues. Musicians as diverse as Peter Gabriel, Ayub Ogada, Joji Hirota and producers such as Phil Ramone, Michael Brook and Pol Brennan came together in the village of Box, and 'A Real World Recorded' is the story of this one extraordinary week.

    My son is in college learning radio, television, and film. We are going to be visiting London when he graduates in 2025, is it possible to visit the studios to see how the magic is made? Love all the diverse music styles all mixing together. So beautiful!! Thanks to you Peter for Real World Music!

    Nick Kershaw your clearly missing the point , of course its about the Music but I think it's more about different Cultures being together over a shared love of Music .

    I believe these sessions were the genesis of the Big Blue Ball project. It started back then and was finally released just a few years ago. If you haven't heard it, it is well worth checking out.

    Wow I'm so glad to have seen this, I was a big fan of Real World in the 90's, loved the spirit of what you were doing, and lots of great albums came out of it. Some of the material on here was unfamiliar, I wonder what treasures there might be still unreleased? Nice to see Trisan in action, it would have been good to see them carry on beyond one album. One of these days I must visit Box. Funny the contrast between the enthusiastic fusions of music and the rather uptight narrator who sounds like she disapproves of the whole thing!

    3:15 I get so upset about remarks like Andy Kershaw’s… He really shows he hasn’t understood anything. He doesn’t know his music history, for starters. He’s just stuck.
    PG is one of those people who can see further, who see the future, who invent the future. How fitting it is that PG’s edifice is close to one of another such person’s, I K Brunel.
    Oh to have been there.

    Let's just call it for what it really is, shall we? Just as the White record company executives in 1930's - 1980's America (Producers, Engineers, A&R, Management) knew how to exploit African American musicians and take their music to make Billions out of it, this is the same thing, but on a much larger (World) scale.
    I am not saying it is a bad thing as much as a fact of life. Because, this is how *_ALL_* things come into existence, including ourselves. For all of our talk of love, almost all of us were conceived from lust and not love. So, who am I to complain?

    • @danielaloi8062
      @danielaloi8062 Před 5 měsíci

      kind of cynical to say, if not entirely untrue. But imo this isn't about exploitation or even 'white helpers'. Gabriel seems to have succeeded in his main goals -- giving these artists studio access, creating the conditions to collaborate, and bringing their music and its appreciation to a larger (Western) audience, to everyone's benefit. (David Byrne's Luaka Bop had a similar mission.)
      Money does make the world go round, and capital, greed and colonialism tend to ruin everything; but love and music go a long way toward making the world a better place.
      Of course the tapes piled up after this and two successive Recording Weeks in 1992 and 1995, and weren't massaged into a proper release until 2008 - so I sincerely doubt the man or the label were out to make a quick buck (or quid, or Euro).

    • @HoggRidduh
      @HoggRidduh Před 5 měsíci

      Thank you, but that's why I said that *_"everything"_* is conceived the same exact way in life. And Geoffrey Oryema's "Exile - 1990" along with Sheila Chandra's "Weaving My Ancestor's Voices - 1992" were released a lot earlier than 2008. They are actually my favorite Real World Records artists. Thank you.
