I've always loved the idea that on dragons they have certain scales that will flicker with a soft light in a way that resembles a fire, only going out or growing dimmer when a dragon is near death. It just seems so pretty and suggests that they always have a fire going within themselves sustaining them throughout their entire life. It also suggests the dragons breath is incredibly flammable or can become incredibly flammable.
