I’m watching this and realizing that we make this without the beans and jollof base and call it red rice. I’ve never had it with another family. We’re from the Bronx. My mom said that her dad’s family taught my grandma to cook. She mentioned Virginia but her dads family is from SC
I grew up in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia but never ate rice and beans until I was an adult. Now, I love eating it. Although in my case, it's usually prepared by a restaurant or store bought instead of homemade. Going to have to try making it from scratch one day.
This is something similar to my upbringing, 9 children to feed , father was breadwinner and never asked for public assistance. Once a month we had streaks ,my parents practice their typical diets , they are healthy are in their late 80’s . Looks delicious I gotta try this 💕🙏
Yes. I was wondering why dry beans would be used and cooked at the same time as rice. The rice will be done way way before the beans are ready. Using readily harvested beans might work but not dry beans.
Come to Jamaica and Rice and Peas goes well with fried chicken stew pork whatever you like along side some nice vegetable salad or mashed potatoes with a tasty drink 😊❤
It is so cool seeing people from all these different African countries share how they make thier version of this meal or sharing tips on ways to make it. I’m just sitting here reading all yall comments and soaking it in. Hopefully I can try these meals some day and maybe even make them 😋🤤Thanks for sharing!!🥰

In DRC we cook it separately, as we have very hard beans so it takes longer to cook even if you soaked it at night Boil beans until almost ready put salt Fry onions till bit brown , add thyme, garlic, green pepper blend, add tomatoes (optional) then add boiled beans removing the soup of beans, can be added after frying Remember not to steer, the beans while frying otherwise you will mash it, just use the pot to steer Then cook rice separately Now dish rice, beans on top you eat just like that or eat with your stew or any meat of your choice It's better to separate otherwise it will be mashy and not that nice
In SouthA we don't call it! Coz we don't have it! I'm moving Northward😂❤ I've missed out on too many African meals. I appreciate the recipes😅 Will definitely do this. ❤❤❤
I was told when I was still very little that when u add salt to beans, it will never cook I guess they meant it will last very long time so the just want me to never try that. But on social media I see a lot of pple who do that 🤷🏽♀️

In somalia we cook the rice and beans only and after they are soft and the rice turns red we eat it with sesame seed oil and little suger and drink milk with tea along so yummy.
I'm guessing the point of flashing the ingredients up for a barely decipherable split second is to cause us to watch it over and over again, to tally up the amount of clicks and watches.
It’s amazing how recipes like this survived. Growing up in the country in Virginia we ate this all the time. With food cost it’s still a go to meal.

I can totally relate - that meal with cornbread was an absolute favorite of mine growing up in GA!

Yup
Why do you enjoy killing and eating animals where there is mercy?
It tastes better when the beans stock is used during simmer before adding the rice to the mixture

This looks delicious 😍. Thank you to everyone sharing the dish name from their homeland 💖
Next time, use fork to mix the beans and the rice to avoid mashing the rice. In Kenya we call it wali wa maharagwe.❤

In Burundi, we cook them separately. But this is like a Monday to Sunday dish in a lot of Burundian households.
This is similar to mchele and njahi in Kenya..........very nice 👍 cooking 🍳 there.

Even the Dry beans in German can never be soft after just soaking over nite ! Just say you cooked the beans before adding the beans in the rice!
She used canned beans ladies... Either red kidney beans or black beans.
I correct myself, I just noticed that she cooked her beans separately in the pressure cooker.
This is my happy pill😂😂😂 I love it so much. When it’s cooked, I’ll add onions to it and leave to steam. Then serve with boiled egg ohhh Jesusss😌😌😌😌

If not using a pressure cooker, only add salt to beans when it is almost done unless it woild take a longer time to soften
If you add salt it get moore tough to get ready..but if you add oil it takes very short time..thank you
