Nikon cameras really suck at auto focusing in LiveView or video, so thats no option for him. They do work really good if you manually focus videos.

Alpha SQUAD official newer ones have it. A7iii is pretty beast...everyone is hoping the a7siii that will most likely be announced in a couple of months will have a flip screen on top of touch.

For safety. For the same reason you sould not use a touch screen for banking. BTW, touch screens do not work when you wear gloves.

I think he's just too upset for that.We all know that casey had a good relationship with canon before (he got the 80D before it was released), and he spent more than 30k on equipment.Refusing him for a god damn lense may be like the last drop that pushed him to say Canon, go fuck yourself
+Razfar I don't think Canon actually sent him anything. All the early stuff he got sent (I believe) was from companies/stores that got them early (The 80D for example, he got sent from the store near his office). Other than that, you're completely right. The fact they can't fix a lense for him, forcing him to spend 1.5k to get a new one, even though he's been an extremely loyal customer, is enough to make anyone switch.
Not to mention that he offered to pay for the repairs on his broken lens.

I like your thoughts on breaking cameras. I was at a town in Wyoming and there was a bald eagle, the first time my dad and I saw one. My dad treated his Canon 5D Mark IV too preciously and was too slow with adjusting the settings. He missed the shot of the eagle. I now understand you.
I like your tech reviews Casey. Straight and to the point. Not like a lot of other CZcamsrs who take forever to open the box.
Autofocus is known to be so-so on the a7sii. Why not the a6500 instead? Has just as good 4k, better autofocus, and a touchscreen.

I think this is the main reason a7s didn't have have a touchscreen, because they have a whole different camera that's already good for vlogging.
Jay Bates Low light performance (a7s II is full frame). This and it's low pixel count are really good for image/video quality. The 6500 is a nice choice but it's not centered around video and for a filmmaker such as Casey, that's probably no bueno.
The low light features are really important to keep quality high and allow for more flexibility since you don't need to have lighting with you/only shoot when light is available.
A6500 has the touchscreen if you want to be current. The A7s II is pretty old at this point and not intended for vlogging whereas the a5whatever or rx100 series is.
I'm not even techy but I'll watch anything Casey makes

LazyDaze not for the a7s II. You might be thinking of the 6500, which is actually a lot different. Low light performance is key to film and the 6500 is vastly lacking compared to the a7s series.

This was my first time watching one of your videos, I love the delivery.
I'd put you in a Panasonic GH4 with the 14-140... smaller than a Canon, touch/selfie screen, 4K, better battery life, good AF. Keep the Sony for low-light work. I bet the AS7 III will finally have a touchscreen, because Sony put one in the a6500.

Tony & Chelsea Northrup the gh5 has 5 axis internal stabilization and bionic autofocus tho, why not opt for that? sure its slightly bigger than the gh4 but it packs a beast and is still fairly lightweight compared to the 80d.

I just picked up my first real camera for CZcams and I had these exact same questions. I came down between two camcorders which were essentially the same, however the interface on the Canon was incredible. The touch screen and easy menu system really caught my eye. The Canon also obtained a port for external audio and video and that was attractive, as the Sony camcorder did not.
Seriously wondering what kind of camera i Should buy! I need a stable video, and manual focus (via ring) and of course 1080p (60fps if i can) With a budget... What would you say that fits that!?

The last Sony camera (a6500) is such a better option for vlogging because it is even more compact, it has internal image stabilization and TOUCH SCREEN. Like this comment if you would like to see Casey review the sony a6500
And it has one of, if not the best current auto focus on any camera as of now But then again, it is a cropped sensor..

The Sony has so much potential if you can get used to it and optimise it to the best quality. Once you fiddle around in the settings and pick a picture profile (I shot in SLOG), there is so much you can do in post production to give it a stunning image. Canon for run & gunning straight away, but Sony if you are looking to spend a bit more time to get a better image. Everyone is different. For the feature to size ratio, you CAN NOT beat Sony!

Why dont any vloggers talk about Panasonic cameras like they have the best bang for your buck cameras that record 4k like the G7 ($450) even comes with a kit lens or the gh4 ($950) 4k 60fps and slow motion at 96 fps and also the g85 which is better at auto focus and has better colors and a upgraded stabilizer also gh5 is coming out and its going to bang hell its water resistant cant tell me canon cameras are better for vlogs other then Panasonic crop factor but wide lens are always there for the rich bois

Lilian A what's wrong with the micro four thirds lens system? Can you elaborate on that please? I hear that a lot but I really don't know.
BadWolfKnight micro 4 3 basically crops the image and has a smaller sensor. the image crop turns a wide image like a 12mm almost eye sight 160 degree into like 110 degrees. or in other terms 12mm is basically 18mm lens on a micro 4 3. this is because of a smaller sensor that crops the image (zooms in, basically.) so you can SEE less image, the pixel density is worse and the noise is usually bonkers. a larger sensor has better noise control, better dynamic range (shadow/hot spot details), and image quality (pixel density.)
a micro 4 3 is still great but they just crop quality by 1.4 to 1.6... so expect a 12mm lens (wide) to look more like an 18mm lens (less wide.)
essentially 1.5 crop factor = 12mm X 150%... which is 18mm
micro 4/3 also has less low light capabilities off the bat when compared with full frame or aps-c
Ye the G7 is amazing (Its my main camera now) But the sony a7 cameras have Full frame sensors better dynamic range, better autofokus...
the sound is bad on the sony...

GBram exactly it was built in mic on Sony vs Rode Hot Shoe mic on Canon. The audio is def gonna sound not as good until he gets a Rode mic for it

The wind reduction mode on the camera was "on". Thats why.
Pretty much all cameras have really shitty audio (canon included), that's why external mics are essential.
Would have made more sense for Casey to attach the mic to the camera so we could really see the comparison, otherwise it's always gonna sound as though the Sony is worse.
Go for the GH5. It has everything you want including dual image stabilisation.

the Sony has that, and does way better in low light. The GH5's sensor is too small, both the A7S (full frame) and the A6xxx series (crop sensor) are larger. the GH4 is great, but it did well in an environment that had no other good 4k cameras, and it's not like that anymore.
put a speed booster and some canon glass on it and now it acts like an apsc sensor, the speed booster give you one more full stop of light
mgregers nah he would need just a regular EF adapter since he uses full frame Canon lenses. but if he has the funds for Sony lenses which I'm guessing he does using Sony glass on an A7S is far superior
mgregers There is no autofocus with a speed booster. If his complaint about the A7S2 is that there is no touch to focus, I think the lack of af would be a deal breaker.

The sony didnt compare to his Canon at all. I picked up on the sony audio real quick.
built-in microphones on most every camera sound tinny and crappy. the sony is no exception but more can absolutely be done to help mask that tincan noise in post-editing.

This is the first video in a while that I've appreciated from Casey. @Casey By the way, if standard profile doesn't fit you liking, for night shots, I highly recommend the eoshd pro color by andrew reid, or for just in general shots, I recommend totolovision by Bill Totolo. If these profile aren't crushed/contrasty enough for you, just choose a different gamma or adjust the black level and gamma to your liking.

Really enjoying the shots from the Sony a7s Mark II. The low light performance is incredible, but unfortunately the battery life in the cold is soooooooo bad. Mind you, we were camping in -20c weather. That might have had something to do with it.

I personally use Sony. I just use a different Sony model that does have a flip out screen. So it really just depends what you want out of the camera.

To focus just setup the continuous focus mode, and/or you just have to press the shutter release button half way to force focus it.The Sony a7s ii is an awesome camera. We use one for our films and it is truly amazing!
Hey Casey, loving the tech reviews! I'd be interested to see you try the GH5 when it comes out in the next month or so. I use the GH4, it's 2 years old but it has both great 4k quality, and touch screen that flips out. I find it perfect for vlogging/filmaking and I think you'd really enjoy it. Interested to hear your opinion!

amazing. i switch to Panasonic Lumix this year - the G7 and GX85 - and it's better than any Canon work i've ever done. 1DmkIV, 5DmkIII, all the L lenses, you name it. Lumix is better right out of the camera.
Johann Lara It's pretty damn good. I'm sure theres some quality difference but works perfectly fine for me. The low light is a bit weak, but hopefully thats fixed with the GH5
It's micro four thirds.... so, it's mediocre for stills. But, it is great for video, so long as you don't want to film in a narrow depth of field.

I used my Sony A7S for almost 200 Vlogs now, and let me tell you: I FEEL YOUR PAIN WITH THE SCREEN NOT BEING FLIPPABLE. But besides that, it's just an remarkable Camera that gives you amazing Quality.
Something to try maybe. the sony action cam remote works with the a7 line. and the new one is small enough just to make a small bracket from the lower body screw. That could give live view in a super small size. I've used the older larger model remote with my A7r2 several times.

The sony is has S-LOG2 colour profiles so offers lots of options for colour grading in post. If you bother with technical post processing then the Sony is great.

Love this video. I have 2x DJI osmos, 3 x Canon 80D, 1x Canon VXIA G20 and Gopro 4+black and Gopro 6Black and of course my iphone 7. And i don't know with what camera to VLOG. I do it with my phone, but i am not satisfied. Any thoughts?
The Sony video is visible crisper. I prefer the Canon colour though.
Yeah, canon's native color profile is awesome, Sony is more muted. Color correction can be applied tho, & you can't make the canon's quality any better.
Jesse Patterson exactly. it's just a different process in post to correct than Canon. I'm sure Casey will be have it figured out after not having a few hours to edit on a new camera with a different color science. but you're right Canons color science is def King!!

Get the Sony a6500. It has a touch screen. Btw, the outdoor shots in this vlog from the Sony in the rain are exceptional! You've given your vlogs new life!

Travis Warren as u probably didn't see, he didn't have his mic hooked up to the sony, that's probably why...
He uses a Rode mic on the Canon. I dont think he had it on when he was using the sony

I loveeeee my canon m50. I bought the body and lens separately, which is the 10-18mm lens. It's wide angle so its perfect for vlogging and sit down videos as well! If anyone has been debating if they should get it..... YOU SHOULD!!!! GREAT CAMERA!!!!
Sony should really respond to the question that's been going on for a few years now... what's holding them from making touchscreen LCDs on their dSLR's? Maybe there's some significant reasons behind it. :)
I think it has something to do with professional use versus consumer use.
most sony users are photographers than vloggers. professional photographers prefer the manual buttons and the viewfinder than touching the screen
Canon is still the best, especially 70D!
Sony is one of the pioneer in using touchscreen for mobile phones. What were they thinking for not using touchscreen for most of their cameras?
Their newest camera the a6500 has touchscreen so I am sure the next make of this camera the a7siii will have it.

Cole Riedel Sony sharpens the image in camera, not because it's better. Something he can do with the canon in post if he wanted to.
The audio was crap because it was the onboard one. Cannons onboard mic is no better, he will probably add an external mic later. Once he learns how to use it better, it will look great. He just hasn't figured out all the bells and whistles. Give it some time!

Chuck Franco I think for blogging it may be better to stick with canon, less work has to be done in post and touchable/flip out screen. With that said Sony has better image quality than Canon but takes more post-practice to achieve.
Thanks for the review bro, just getting in to doing a lot of video work and I picked up a used canon SL1 for super cheap, never was a fan of sony products and did a lot of research before getting that SL1. It doesn't have the flip screen but it is the smallest DSLR made and I do love it. Found this review of the sony after one of my gym clients got the same sony you got in your video and she was raving about the 4k video, she failed to mention no touch screen, that touch screen on my SL1 is great. I'm going to stick with canon, next camera for me is a T6i.

Efrain Torres Casey is not from the CC I think. He's just point and shoot, but you are totally right it's easy to change afterwards.
If you're talking about the picture, that's just the effect of using a different White Balance.

when I used to use a Sony h9 for photos, I used some pliers to rip off the triangles. It surprisingly didn't break the shell of the camera so everything turned out good, no more jingling.
