  • In this video I talk about how to tame a Giganotosaurus, and man is this creature a doozy. I do like the methods I talk about, but some of them just carry too much risk for my liking, I just recommend making a trap out of stone structure pieces. If you have multiple people it should be good enough to knock it out with ease and no risk.
You wake up in the middle of nowhere, maybe it's a beach, a mountain, a forest, or a jungle, but it is no place that you have known. There is a strange device implanted into your arm. Welcome to the ark. The place where long extinct creatures eat you while you feebly try to survive. This series is my attempt to show you little things that will help you flourish.

While you have never seen it rage yourself, when I used to play Official PVP, a splash damage from rockets used to instantly rage it out. We used this mechanic to turn battles to our advantage. That was 4 years ago, however, and still the one reason why I don't use gigas unless I need to(extinction)

    • @Tecorsuh
      @Tecorsuh  Před 3 lety +10

It's really so hard to track changes in this game, there is so much that isn't documented or mis-documented in the patch notes. I mentioned that it happens mainly because I couldn't find anywhere that explicitly said it was removed.
It's also so hard now to get a giga to rage outside of an insta-rage delivered by a boss. The best test I felt I did to get a Giga to rage was with a spawned in saddle with an absurd resistance, since rage is suppose to be determined before resistances, vs 5 spawned in level 500 Rexs. 13:50 is a clip of the test. TL;DW The Giga was going to die before it would rage. The rage meter was decaying about as fast as it was filling. And from what I've read, it's even harder to rage a fully imprinted Giga than the wild caught ones I was testing with.
I don't know if the rage decay was a problem on my end or not. I do know from the patch notes that the last several documented changes to the Giga were to make it more difficult to trigger the rage mechanic, so maybe they broke something so only insta-rage is possible now?
      ark.gamepedia.com/Giganotosaurus#Changelog
Also, I think Rocket Launchers won't work to insta-rage Gigas anymore since they no longer have an item quality. I'm not sure how much of an effect that change would have on getting Gigas to rage in PvP.

@Jacob Theriault this was also from 4 years ago. When you can win a PVP war by shooting rockets at the ankles of the enemy gigas, you tend to NEVER trust a Dino that can turn that easily on you again

    • @Tecorsuh
      @Tecorsuh  Před 3 lety +15

@Jacob Theriault Okay, this comment got buried in my notifications, and I think you didn't read my comment at all. I will respond to your points from both comments you left.
"If your Giga rages from a rocket you have a shit saddle and no imprint"
In version 255.0 Wildcard removed the ability for rocket launchers to have item quality. Before that time, a high weapon damage Rocket Launcher could deal enough damage to a Giga to insta-rage it. Also during that time, the cap for weapon damage % was much higher. So a single rocket from a rocket launcher could be dealing 5 000 or more damage. Now, it's capped to 1800 damage, making it impossible for a single rocket to cause a giga to rage.
"In PvP you don't use tamed gigas. . . use the bred ones"
I literally said that from what I've read about the rage mechanics is that it's even harder to rage a fully imprinted Giga than wild caught ones. So, I focused my attention to getting a wild caught one to rage.
"a tamed giga can rage to a bob with a good shotgun"
Let's try that then. I tried a 250% weapon damage pump action shotgun on a wild caught level 83 giga(I used dotame so it was level 124, about 17 500 HP) I put a 300 armor saddle on it to make sure it wouldn't die during the test. I put myself into godmode, infinitestats, and fly, to make sure I didn't die, before unclaiming it and shooting it.
In the absolute best case scenario, It took 24 point blank shots before the Giga Raged. It takes approximately 45 seconds of uninterrupted shooting and reloading to shoot 24 shotgun blasts.
Side note, patch 255.2 decreased max item quality to 293.5% on official servers so I think it's fair to say that a 250% damage shotgun is a good test. Also, Max armor on a saddle is 124 after a server reset, so I'll try again with that armor value.
If there is any slowdown in fire rate or an increased range, it will not work as well as it did in the first test.
I did another test with the 250% damage pump shotgun on the same giga, now level 187 with 18 000 HP and a 123 armor saddle. Except this time I was on the ground running from it. I wasn't on a mount as that would decrease my accuracy and rate of fire. I was still in god mode so I wouldn't have to worry about dying and ruining the test. I just tried to keep ahead of it and not get hit as best as I could. I unloaded about 80 rounds into it, somewhere between 13 and 14 reloads, and guess what? It died before it raged. I don't know how many people with 200+% damage pump action shotguns it would need to get it to rage, but a single person would only be able to do it at an impossibly close range. I'd reckon it would take 3+ people with 200+% pump action shotguns constantly firing for 30 seconds to get it to rage.
      "Another Giga. . . Rhino. . . Velo. . ."
Okay, let's try those as well. Since I killed my test subject I'll spawn in a new one. A level 124 with 17 900 health and a 124 armor saddle. I spawned in wild versions of each creature and tamed one and pumped 100 levels into melee damage, unclaimed it and tried again, then got a new one, pumped 100 levels into melee damage and unclaimed the Giga and tried again. Wild creatures are not able to rage a tame giga. I demonstrated that in this video; if 5 level 500 wild rexes could not make a giga rage before killing it, no 1v1 battle will.
Another Giga. The Giga I ended up using had 333% melee damage. It took it a while, but it was able to get the Giga I was riding to rage. It was actually almost dead before I turned infinite stats on.
A Woolly Rhino. The one I used had 630% melee damage. The AI controlled one was not even close. Without the charge attack, they deal next to no damage.
Testing Woolly Rhino Again. This one had 864% melee damage. This time I was riding it and the giga was unclaimed. It's not even close with a 100% charge attack. This particular creature only managed about 2000 damage on my best run. It would need a much higher number than that to rage a Giga I'm testing with.
Checking further, Woolly Rhinos were nerfed earlier this year to only deal 8x damage on charge instead of 12.5x damage on charge. Even with the old damage multiplier, you would need around 1500% melee damage to pull off an rage on a wild caught giga using a charge. This means you would need around 2300% melee damage with the current multiplier. I do not know how possible this is on the current version.
A Velonasaur. The one I used had 943% melee damage. Not even close. I don't know if the AI is just stupid and not using the attacks correctly, but when it did hit the Giga it wasn't moving the rage meter at all.
Testing Velonasaur again. The one I used had 784% melee damage. This time I was riding it and the Giga was unclaimed. Velonasaur will not work if you get hit by the giga, it breaks the minigun mode. It does not have enough stamina to maintain fire long enough to get the Giga to rage. So again, it will take a concentrated effort of several people to get a single giga to rage.
Testing a Third Velonasaur. This one has 1006% melee damage. Riding it and the Giga is unclaimed. It takes 10 seconds, about 1200 stamina, worth of uninterrupted shots in the minigun mode to get the giga to rage with this particular creature. Any less weapon damage or stamina and it wouldn't be able to do it solo. Again, it will not work if you get hit by the giga. So this needs a concentrated effort of several people.
Also, the Velonasaur is much much much slower than a giga, so you can't just ride it in and expect it to live through an attack. The one I was testing with only took 3 hits before the screen was flashing red and it was almost dead.
As a reminder, this was with a almost stationary wild caught giga with 17 900 HP and 120% melee damage. A fully Imprinted giga bred for fighting makes it much harder to get a giga to rage without it dying or it killing you first.
      "raging gigas is sooo simple..."
It's obviously not. It takes a coordinated attack from 3 or more people with either creatures bred specifically for the task, or max damage shotguns. That doesn't sound so simple to me. It sounds like weeks worth of preparation in the form of taming, breeding, imprinting, and/or farming shotguns or shotgun blueprints. That is just on a crappy wild caught Giga that I was testing on. A bred, fully imprinted giga with somebody in the saddle would be much harder to get to rage.
"Do you guys play on singleplayer or something?"
That doesn't matter; the rage mechanics are the same no matter where you play. But to answer your question, I play on single player with creature levels set to a max of 150 and single player settings turned off. All of my setting are trying to mimic the settings of official servers as close as possible, with a couple exceptions. 1) taming rates I use are 2.5x 2) breeding times are drastically reduced to be feasible for a non-dedicated setting 3) I have a custom level and engram point ramp to be single-player and mod friendly. There is nothing affecting the damage a creature deals or receives.
"The lack of knowledge on this is aweing"
You've been spouting off a lot of stuff that just doesn't hold up on the current patch of the game, is vague enough to be misleading, or is highly exaggerated. On the current patch of the game it is very difficult to get even a wild caught unstatted giga to rage, which should be the easiest giga to rage.

Tip with Giga topor when in the taming part is Giga topor goes down MUCH faster than it raises. So as soon as its dropped, grab a few hundred and get in its inventory, and wait till its about 1000 topor, then just just feed it a few hundred narcos at once. It'll take a much longer time to raise than it drops. Use a calculator to work out the ideal number of torpor to raise it back to full and pay attention, as once the raise is finished it'll drop topor *rapidly*

    That about-to-be-mine Giga woke up!
Fjordur, far-east area, spotted a 85 R-giga (is the R- relevant?). Single player settings (2.5× tame timer I reckon)
    My first try at this!
I set up five metal dino gates nicely, two large bear traps to play safe, lured him into that trap, closed it by a sixth gate, all shivering and excited! There I was, I trapped my very first giga!
I dished over 200 bolts from my ascendant 212% crossbow, and there he went, sound asleep.
I wanted to wait for him to starve so that he would gobble up the five kibbles in one bite, but at the end I could not stand the waiting, he only swallowed four of them when I served him. I was constantly monitoring his torpor, and he was way over 50%. When he was due to swallow the last kibble, he stood up, and I was happy, my first giga tame!
The time I noticed I had no got the name-your-new-pet popup, that its name was still ominously yellow and not green, I was being chewed.
He woke up, no warning, torpor way above 50%, 84% tamed (4 swallowed, the 5th on its way), he was just about to grab the last kibble - and instead, chose to wake up, kill me and eat my brave argy on its attempt to rescue - or avenge me.
    WHAT HAPPENED?
Since my stuff was right below its jaws, I had to destroywilddinos to get it back…

Corrupted gigas are all over the waste land on extinction. However they have a huge debuff compared to their wild counterparts. While the wild giga's base health can be between 79k and 90k (depending on the level), the corrupted giga has 35k health and doesn't have the bleed effect. 1 time when I first started on extinction, I got into a fight with a corrupted giga with an argentavis and it ended up being a stalemate.

If you can get a hold of a MasterCraft or ascendant crossbow, use it. Tranq arrows are almost free in comparison to shocking tranq darts and you'll never kill it by accident like with some crossbow tames. Faster rate of fire and longer damage over time than the longneck too. Also, kibble only. FFS if you're ready to take a giga you've got a kibble farm, tame a couple of weak brontos for eggs and get that yellow kibble going early and often.

i think the easiest way is if you find one on the volcano, lure it to the snow biome into one of the small rivers that run throught it and it will get trapped in the ice, unable to move in any direction. and when you knock it out u dont have to worry about it drowning cause the water isnt deep enough for the giga to drown. just be sure to guard it from dire wolves and potentially another giga since theres 2 spawns for them in the snow😂
